The average Par 4 at the PGA championship is

Aug 4, 2017, 8:37 AM

a quarter of a mile long.

That blows my mind.

This has been the case at most major tournaments for years (Augusta, Pinehurst, Chambers Bay was .264 miles per par 4).

That's interesting, but when you think about it what difference does it make? The player with the lowest number of strokes wins the tournament, so "par" is really just a number. I remember several years ago when the commentators at a Ryder Cup were harping on a par 4 hole being the longest in Ryder Cup history. That was even more irrelevant as The Ryder Cup is match play and it does not matter what the par on any hole is ...... you just have to take less strokes than your opponent to win a hole!

I understand your point, but using that logic, they should

not call any hole a "Par X" hole. I guess the rankings are more for the viewers than the players.

Still, a quarter mile is a LONG way to hit a golf ball in 3 shots with any accuracy.

Oh, I agree. In competition, it really does not matter what par you call a hole, but historically speaking it gives you a measure of how players before you did in relation to par on a certain golf courses. It also allows players, say at public (or really private) venues to compare how they may stack up against the best players in the world. I could go play Harbor Town from the tips and see how I would have fared against the best players in the world. A few years ago a couple of players (one was a friend of mine's brother) got to play Torrey Pines right before (or after - don't remember) the US Open while the course was set up for the tournament. It gave them a real gauge to see what it was like to play a course set up for the pros.

That would be 2 shots to reach in regulation.

Also of note, DJ was one yard shy of hitting a quarter mile drive yesterday.

Heck, I could probably reach a hole with one-half gallon of gas in my car and two rest stops. (and that's from the gold tees).
