The ACC should be 12 teams and it should be...

Sep 12, 2019, 1:18 PM

ACC South
Miami
FSU
Georgia Tech
Clemson
NC State
UNC

ACC North
Duke
Boston College
UVA
Virginia Tech
Maryland
Louisville

Wake's gotta go. Too small.
Maryland should be in the ACC. That's just obvious. I'm starting to miss the batteries.
Louisville makes the least amount of sense geographically, but I like their athletic department helping our overall competitiveness. Baseball, Basketball, Football all have solid foundations. And they have a rival in the SEC.
Pitt didn't make the cut for geography and they don't have a stadium.
Syracuse didn't make the cut because Lousiville got their spot.

We should play 5 from the South every year, no crossover rival, and play 3 from the North every year. Rotate so we play every team in a 3 year span. And we should play UGA the first game of every season, SCAR in the last game, another major Power 5 opponent, and an instate small school.

This would make the universe better, but it will never happen.

If we are randomly dropping and adding team to the ACC, I would start with choosing Penn State instead of Maryland.

It's the only way the North division has any football tradition. Your north division is even worse than the current coastal.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Maryland could be just as good as Penn St, and

Sep 12, 2019, 1:32 PM

Perception is very important though.

Even though FSU sucks we get credit for beating FSU.

No matter how good Duke is, we would get no credit.

Penn State carries the reputation that Maryland never will.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

If we play FSU, Miami, UGA, GT, SCAR every year...

Sep 12, 2019, 1:35 PM

then I don't believe it will matter the perception difference (which is real) between Penn St and Maryland.

I don't think Maryland's breakup with the ACC was amicable. I doubt they're coming back any time soon. When they left, most of us said - don't let the door hit you on the way out. They were not good at the time.

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-10yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I don't like Marlyand. I agree, but them being in the ACC

makes sense. I want a team on the schedule that I care about hurting them.

I know it won't happen. This is my football utopia land, not a realistic projection of the future.

badge-donor-10yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

my take..... only 3 things may (and should) happen

Sep 12, 2019, 1:38 PM

1) re-align to N and S divisions as you propose
S: CU, FSU, daU, GT, NCSU, Tarholes, Duke
N: Wake, VT, UVA, Pitt, Syr, BC, Lou

2) Eliminate the annual cross-over rival, so that we only go a 3 or 4 years max between rematches

3) ACC champ game must be between two best teams overall, regardless of division

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-10yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

So what's the point of having Divisions...

Sep 12, 2019, 2:09 PM

if the championship is between the two best teams overall regardless of division

West VA / VT / UNCheat / WF / GT / FSU / Cuse

I would take the coots of Maryland. They are our rival and it would open up more non-conference games. Alos, it would fun to see just how they would thrive in the ACC.

just like they are in the SEC.

As long as they are willing to pretend that being in the SEC makes them a good team, they won't be motivated to actually become a good team. Can't say that I mind that.

Re Pitt: Miami doesn't have a stadium either. So what?

I do miss having Maryland in the conference. Historically, Clemson & MD were the best football schools in the ACC, and so there was a sort of natural rivalry there that just went poof when they bolted.

I like Wake: they're one of our oldest pairings (only GT and NCSU in-conference more games played).

I will fight like heck to ensure that Wake is in the ACC for as long as they wish to be a part of our peers.

The best school after Clemson is Wake and don't forget it.

I am more of a fan of reverting to the ACC vs Big East "divisions". It kinda makes it north/south and allows ND a path without interfering with the carolinas.

ACC "Jefferson Pilot" Division
Clemson
Florida State
Virginia
Georgia Tech
North Carolina
State
Duke
Wake

ol Big East Division
Miami
BC
Pitt
Cuse
Notre Dame
Louisville
Virginia Tech
+1 (Army/Navy... maybe WVU but I prefer the service academies)

In this scenario, you ONLY play teams in your division. Outside the division is OOC so VT and UVA is OOC for ACC CG purposes. The old ACC plays 7 games, allows 5 for OCC scheduling. The old BE plays 6 games and allows for 6 OCC scheduled games.

The division winner for both sides plays in the ACC CG.

Conference covers all travel costs (Miami's big issue with the old BE)... so basically the carolinas covers the travel cost.

I also think that it opens the "Big East" path up for the northern schools with a better chance of having a title run, especially Miami.

I am guessing , not as insult, but as a guess that the OP is under 40 years old . Curious if I am right.

I do like his divisions , but if we are putting Maryland back in , uSC least should replace Louisville in the fantasy league.

At the least we should ditch divisions

Sep 12, 2019, 3:36 PM

and assign 3 annual rivals per team (Ga.Tech, NCSU, FSU for us) and rotate all the rest. Each team would play every league team both at home and away at least once every four years with 8 game schedule. Top 2 in CCG.

As for MD - yeah I miss the hate there. At least that game stirred passion - hard to come by with our current slate and we don't play Coastal teams often enough to develop any kind of rivalry traction there.

Re: The ACC should be 12 teams and it should be...

I agree, Wake belongs. Louisville and the Yankee schools DON'T!! L'ville is a $h1th0l3 and the "AC" in ACC stands for ATLANTIC Coast!! Get a freaking map or globe or something! They are closer to being on the Lake Erie coast than the Atlantic!! GOOD GRIEF!!

WV wouldn't be a bad addition, App St would be interesting and I think they'd "grow" up quick, ECU might not be bad, maybe VCU or UCF?

Personally, I wish Penn State would never play another down. Paterno may have known, or he may not have known, I don't know. But just for the way they did him I will never, ever pull for them and sure don't want them contaminating the ACC!

I don't like Pitt and 'Cuse being in but, I understand the need for expanding and, athletically and geographically they do make sense. I like playing ND but, geographically they should be out too.

When the NCAA laid the wood to us with a 2 year probation, the ACC voted to tack on another year which passed. Wake Forest was one of the programs that voted against this as I recall.

Screw Maryland- they suck

Sep 13, 2019, 1:44 AM

They paid almost $50mil tobleave the ACC and they have to pay more to leave the BIG. Penn would be a huge get for ACC and ut would press ND to get locked into a Conference. As long as commish played his cards right, then ND gets no football TV money since they have their own contract. Word is, the funds from ACCN will eventually make ND join ACC. And hopes of a premier school to join as many think leagues will be 16 teams in near future when the playoffs go to 8 so that you have more likelihood of having 2 teams

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: The ACC should be 12 teams and it should be...

Sep 13, 2019, 6:47 AM

If I had my way I'd prefer 10 team conferences (like they used to have) and that let's everyone play all the same teams. Conference championships would mean something then. Clemson plays Alabama more than the Coots and they're in the same "league". It would make the non-revenue sports easier to play because they travel by bus as the conference footprint is smaller. Bigger is not always better.

Clemson
Carolina
NC State
Wake
Virginia
Virginia Tech
Maryland
Florida State
Miami
South Carolina

get rid of Louisville, Pitt, BC, ND, and Syracuse for geographic reasons. Bring back Cooterville State and Maryland for the same geographic reason

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: The ACC should be 12 teams and it should be...

Sep 13, 2019, 6:56 AM

Since there's no way we're ever getting Penn St. in the ACC, then what are the realistic options? As I see it, there are only three:
1) WVU
2) Cincinnati
3) Connecticut

I'm a fan of the ACC's superior academic profile. Every school in the conference is in the current US News top 100. Everybody except Louisville, that is, which checks in at #192. WVU, though it may be geographically ideal and already have its "backyard brawl" tradition with Pitt, would only lower the academic profile of the conference, since it's ranked in the 220's.

Cincinnati would give us a foothold in Ohio, which is a big plus, but it's still #132, and so would come in significantly below anybody else except for Louisville. They have demonstrated that they can field good football and basketball teams, though, so who knows what ACC membership might do for them?

Connecticut is currently ranked slightly higher than Clemson, at #62, I believe, so it would fit with our academic profile, it would fill a "hole" in our dominance of the East Coast, and would of course immediately compete in basketball. They, too, have been able to field good football teams, though they're a dog right now.

If I could really have my druthers, I'd bring Maryland back in, but since that ain't happening, IMO Connecticut would be the team to balance out a full Notre Dame membership in this, the best of all conferences.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

4 of the top 5 football programs in the same division? No thanks ***
