What am I missing on super conferences?

The SEC is not impressing anybody by adding teams. They are making a stir because those teams are 2 HUGE football brands. It seems to me that the general opinion is that every other conference needs to add teams to keep up.
You don't beat Alabama by playing their game and no other conference is going to compete with the SEC by adding teams. The ACC is the only one that has the opportunity to make a similar move by adding Notre Dame.
What is the perceived advantage to a "super conference"? What good does adding teams do? We are not going to start playing all star games between conferences. More money for the conference will not produce more money for our program if the team doesn't increase conference marketability. We could potentially lose money because of the pie having more pieces.
My thoughts are to talk to a few ELITE teams and see if we can sell them on moving to the ACC because they have a better chance at going through the ACC to the National Championship. This means we look to a few teams in the SEC or B1G because adding the real USC or Oregon does not make geographic sense, and there are no elite programs in the group of 5. Otherwise, we defend what we have in the ACC. Let's not worsen our situation by adding teams just to get bigger.

I like the program but not the geography. It's a long way from Oklahoma to Massachusetts. Basically, I find them intriguing but not a real benefit. I would put them with a few group of 5 teams that I think have benefits but not enough. Cincinnati, UCF, App St. You could also throw Baylor in. All have some good things but are we really improving the conference or just growing it?

I hope cooler heads will prevail. If the ACC jumps too fast, they may do much worse damage.

Who are you going to add that gets Clemson more money? I don't care if the conference is making more if Clemson is not.

the ACC is not the money conference

it doesn't matter what they do. That is the reason teams will leave the ACC. Small schools will want to join to get more money then they are getting now, but the ACC has never and will never be able to keep up with the Joneses.

OK I agree that it might be hard for the ACC to hold onto everybody that it has because of money. I also agree that certain additions could make more money for the conference than they get back. What I was trying to get at was those are the only teams that need to be looked at for expansion and I think the list is short.

playing everyone once in football and twice in hoops. It was much better then. No balance schedule arguments. YOu decided the best in competition

From ALL other SportS. Thi$ i$ $trictly about the buck$...but ALL the other $port$ need $ignificant football revenue to exi$t. Of cour$e, the ultimate 'power group' of program$ will have $ucce$$, by and large, becau$e they'll have the dollar$ to compete with. There will be no NCAA, at lea$t for football...either...which, frankly, i$ fine.

I agree, but who brings more money to the table than they are going to take away? Does West Virginia do that? I don't think so. What about UCF? I doubt it. Yes the Texas and Oklahoma move was about money, but because they are Oklahoma and Texas. It is not because they are 2 random teams.

Yes. If you are going to super size then go to 20 teams so you can spit into two divisions of 10 then play all 9 in your division in football. Forget the cross overs and just play a championship game between the two divisions.

Agree OP, it wasn't long ago all the nancies around here

were convinced we had to go to the Big12 or else.... doom and gloom! Since then we have won how much?
By my count, the SEC is still only going to have one champion, so all of those teams can't win the championship. Somebody is going to become somebody else's bitc# in that new alignment.
There is too much money to be had from CFP being popular across the country, not just in SEC land. Where there is an opportunity for $$, somebody is going to find a way to exploit it. The play is how does the ACC get negotiations back on the table? Does adding WVA, ND, and/or Penn St. do it? Does an alliance with another conference do it?

I like the idea of Notre Dame and maybe this is an opportunity to get them to join in football. If the 12 team play off giving the top 4 conference champions byes goes through, then I think that we get them.
I also would like to get Penn State, but are they really in play? I don't see the ACC being an easier route to the playoff than the B1G. Both conferences have 1 powerhouse to get through, a couple of teams that are historically important but down at the moment, and a lot of teams that are 2nd or 3rd tier programs. Since the ACC doesn't pay out more than the B1G, I do not see the advantage for Penn State. I have seen their name a lot so I hope that there is a reason that I have overlooked.
As for West Virginia, I don't like it. I was present for the debacle at the Orange Bowl, so maybe that influences my opinion. I think what they bring to the table is minimal, so I think they will be a net negative. Of course, I don't EVER want to hear "Whoop, whoop, whoop, first down," again in my life.

Bareftn, I agree about not expanding just to add numbers.
I think the ACC's only "move" is to try and convince Notre Dame to come on full-time. Short of that, I don't think we have anything else that's attractive enough, and we'd be just watering down what we already have.
My bigger fear honestly, is the B1G (or even SEC) coming into our footprint and grabbing a few programs from a list of FSU, Miami, VT, NC State, Clemson, etc....If that happened, then the ACC would be thrown into a mad scramble or death spiral. No idea how likely that is to happen. If I'm the B1G, it makes sense to establish a presence in the South in order to increase your ability to recruit in a part of the country with the most football talent...If you're Michigan, would you rather recruit in Fla or Minnesota...GA or Iowa?

Maybe geography is not the hurdle that I think that it is. Yes, FSU, Miami, or GT would open up markets for the B1G, but it presents a lot of travel. I'm not sure how much interest that would provide on either end.
If advancements in virtual learning have diminished enough of the problems that travel presents for student athletes, then a couple of Big 12 teams could be interesting. Baylor has a solid football program, and are the reigning basketball champion. OK State is also a solid program.
