The ACC Channel documentary on he history of the ACC is

... very informational and enlightening.
It should be a must watch for anyone wondering how things evolved to the point that we see them today, not just in ACC hoops, but in ACC football as well.
It’s a really good chronicle of the early decisions that were made, the paths that were taken, and the powerful personalities involved.
If you aren’t watching it you should be.

Everett Case was a force of nature @ NC State ... he created

the ACC tournament, built Reynolds Coliseum, made sure the tourney was played on the NC State campus every year and pushed through the decision to have the tournament champ be the lone ACC representative in the NCAAs.
In response, the other North Carolina schools made hoops a #1 priority, and the Tobacco Road domination of the ACC was under way.
Meanwhile Clemson and Frank Howard focused on football ... which after all, was the real reason the ACC was created in the first place.
When Everett Case was nearing retirement, he saw that Clemson had a guy with a great basketball mind who took a squad of guys with very limited talent all the way to the ACC tournament finals ... so he hired Press Maravich away from Clemson to become his top assistant and virtual head coach in waiting.
Think about it ... Clemson had a guy in place that the great Everett Case though should be his successor (John Wooden was a big Maravich fan too) and Frank Howard just sort of said “So long ... don’t let the screen door hit you.”
Frank Howard was really good for our football program. He laid the ground work for where are today. But, it’s hard to overlook that he totally botched our hoops opportunities either through neglect or ignorance.
At NCSU, Press was the guy who followed “The Legend” and of course he never achieved what had been hoped. Still, you have to wonder what might have been if Clemson had paid him to stay and then given him the support he needed to build the program before the total NC domination of the ACC was complete.
Did we miss the boat, or was it never really there for us in the first place?
Personally, I believe it was probably already too late by then. But, it might have been our one best chance.

with all the angst and pulling of hair about the current Clemson hoops situation.
Oh well ... you know what they say about ignoring history.

Yeah it's great. Can't wait to watch the other installments. Next is how Dean came into prominence and then soon after Lefty.

what Clemson did and didn’t do while the other schools were solidifying their future.
If you want to,know why we are where we are, you have only to look at where we’ve were.
Oh well, I give up. Let’s discuss at length what BURBON we’re drinking tonight instead.

Course was set even before the ACC when we turned down invitation to the NIT in 39 ( which outranked NCAA then) due to fear it might negatively affect spring football. Bad decision.

We didn’t want guys like Banks McFadden missing spring football practice fooling around with some silly basketball tournament.
The roots of our present day issues in hoops do indeed go back a long, long way.

If you had to choose a coach to represent Clemson basketball in a history of the ACC propaganda documentary, who would you choose?
