I agree. It caused a split in the IPTAY donors that was nasty. Many of my friends left and never came back.

Watching that video will never get old.

That defense was NASTY!

competent coaching and recruiting are not what lead to winning, obviously.

We lost two games that year that we should not have lost.

Apr 19, 2022, 2:38 PM

This is *not* in defense of the current head coach of another sport at Clemson.

But, it is absolutely a reflection of what Clemson football fans were saying after losses to Duke and Ga Tech that season.

Fans were saying that Danny’s teams were not very effective on offense when forced to come from behind.

They were saying maybe Danny was behind the times.

Don’t shoot the messenger.

These are totally accurate representations of the general attitude of our fan base after the 1989 regular season ... before we destroyed WVU and then fired Danny.

Nobody wanted Danny fired, but a lot of people felt that we were under-performing given the overall talent.

One of the many bowls we went to when our children were growing up and it was a great one. As I posted in a conversation on WV earlier, we got to Major Harris and you knew the game was over. Linebackers like Levon Kirkland just aren't made today and that is what our defense the last few years has missed.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

We would have at least 6 defensive players ejected if that

Apr 18, 2022, 10:42 PM

game were played today, in 2022. Thrilling to see and remember how a nasty defense really looked.

We’ve had a lot of really great linebackers at Clemson.

Apr 18, 2022, 11:00 PM

Levon Kirkland gets my vote as the best one.

The 89 season was disappointing.

Apr 18, 2022, 11:02 PM

Probably the best team Ford ever had. The inexplicable loss to Duke was due to poor coaching and motivation.

The game was played in the rain, and it neutralized Clemson's speed. The loss to Georgia Tech at home was the bigger headscratcher.

Danny was one great QB away from winning SEVERAL Natty's

Apr 19, 2022, 12:13 PM

during his time at Clemson. Even though he was the all time winningest QB in Clemson history for a long time, I say if you replaced Rodney Williams with Deshaun Watson, at least two of those four teams Rodney started on would have won Nattys.

Apr 19, 2022, 1:12 PM

The 1988 team definitely. That team was 2 plays away from a NC- the puntrooskie and a snap on a punt that went over the punters head against NC Stae.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Very true about the game at Duke.

I was there, and my memory of it is the field looking like it was literally flooded. We couldn’t do anything.

The GT loss (on homecoming, if I recall) was a major head scratcher at the time. But little did we know, GT was on their way to a national championship the following year.

I was about 7 or 8 and all I can remember from being at that game was yelling "what a major disappointment " and that was the first time I seen my parents drunk. 32 years later, ill still fight a hillbilly, again..

Great Game! I attended with my entire family with my wife's sister's family (who were cheering for WV). Lot's of fun--I really miss the coaching days of Danny Ford! Go Tigers!

It was a great relief after the Fall that we had in the Low country. Hugo sand the Christmas eve snowfall of 6 inches of powder snow. Ready for this win.

I was at this game. Coach Ford always had his teams prepared. RIP Chester.

Apr 19, 2022, 8:56 AM

sure. But he also usually had that one or two inexplicable losses that would jeep a very good season from being great. Still believe he would have gotten a 2nd championship if he had stayed.

1990 could have been the year with Ford. Good team with a 34-3 win over Georgia and 30-0 win over Illinois in the Outback Bowl (Hall of Fame bowl back then).

The class Danny was set to bring in for 1990 would have kept Clemson in the NC hunt for several seasons. I truly believe Clemson would have won its 2nd NC in 1990 if Lennon had not been such a vindictive idiot.

Danny was the best and he should never been fired.

He definitely would have won a second NC no ifs, ands or buts.

I personally thanked him for all he did for Clemson at the Orange Bowl.

GO TIGERS
