The #1 problem was recruiting a pro style QB with Caldwell as OL coach

What do Boyd, DW4, KB, and TLaw have in common? They could make things happen with their legs. This helped mask the mediocre at best oline blocking for them.
What do Stoudt and DJ have in common? They are statues in the pocket and have to rely on a Swiss cheese oline to give them time... time our oline just can't give them on a routine basis.
OL has always been the weakest link under Dabo. Not having a scrambling QB only magnifies that problem. As long as we continue to employee Caldwell, we have to have a QB that can mask his incompetence. PERIOD.

Now do the post about how it was a mistake to recruit a passing QB when none of our WRs can catch the ball when they are wide open and by themselves on the field.
Also they struggle to catch it when in coverage.
Oh, also you forgot DJ had a 30 yard TD run last year against BC.
He's also had multiple nice runs this season for first downs and a couple of TDs on the ground.
Maybe the problem was recruiting a pocket passer who is currently struggling with pocket presence. (not sure how the coaches could have foreseen this though)
DJs moves just as well as Tajh did. DJ just isn't sure when to bail on a pass play and the game is moving way too fast for him at the moment in that area.

I will always believe the problem with Stoudt was The Chad. Soon as he left Stoudt looked like a pro.. I dont have anything against Chad, but when he was gone that kid showed a lot.

Agreed. My question is why? Dabo is correct that great teams are built from the "inside out."
To give our coaches credit...I think our OL recruiting has improved the last few years...I just wish we signed more OL (HS kids & offer a few more too) and had a slightly larger OL room. I don't blame Caldwell for that.....

Coach Caldwell is 67 years old and he has been coaching since 1976.

Hello BigCUFan,
I realize that it is popular these days to bash Robbie Caldwell as OL coach; this year's OL has had an overall poor 1st Half of the 2021 season. I suspect that many well-meaning fans look at R.Caldwell's physique, recognize that it doesn't remind anyone of the roided-up Arnold Schwarzeneger, and take the leap that a coach with a couch-potato physique must not have the brains and experience to be a good coach. Let me remind you ... R.Caldwell's build is similar to that of former highly esteemed Clemson OL coach Brad Scott.
Moving forward, I'll start with the old saying: What's popular isn't always right, and what's right isn't always popular.
R.Caldwell was, and is a fine OL coach. Zone blocking isn't exciting for many fans, because zone blocking schemes are not usually conducive for driving forward and burying the defensive player into the ground. That's because zone blocking is more conducive for pass plays. Oh yes, and zone blocking is what's used in the NFL ... see what happens to recruiting of O-linemen on teams which run the option and which do NOT use zone blocking. (Remember GA Tech and Paul Johnson's recruiting? Went in the toilet and subsequently GA Tech's team went in the toilet.)
R.Caldwell develops players very well. Look up former Vanderbilt OT Chris Williams (had nice 7 - 8 year NFL career). R.Caldwell also developed a former HS QB and developed him into a NFL OT for a couple of years (look up Thomas Welch). For R.Caldwell's Clemson OL achievements, let's look past the manifestly talented Jackson Carman and John Simpson and instead look at the 'less obvious' successes: Tremayne Anchrum (3* who was 'too small' ... but now in NFL)
Tyler Shatley (3* HS fullback ... moved to DL at Clemson, then moved to OL where R.Caldwell developed this 'project' into a terrific OG for Clemson who has been in the NFL since 2014.
Gage Cerevenka (3* DT who was moved to OL) didn't make it in the NFL, but Caldwell developed him into a fine college OG for us.
Caldwell can still coach and identify talent: Look at Jordan McFadden (3* 'too small' OT) who will be our next NFL O-lineman. Caldwell isn't necessarily taking chicken feathers and turning it into chicken salad, but he can no-foolin' take under-the-radar players and develop them into fine OL.

the OL performance has been a consistent and glaring issue/weakness under Dabo and the common denominators here are Dabo and Caldwell and Dabo doesn't coach the OL.

Trevor Lawrence was a pro-style quarterback. But he obviously had much greater maneuverability and speed than DJU. DJU is glued to the ground and it's just baffling.
