The floodgates of NIL

May 2, 2022, 3:23 PM

opened due to federal ruling, but it was lazy, lack of NCAA oversight that landed us in this mess.

There must be some form of “cap” or other regulation to ensure some resemblance of sustainable college athletics. If pro sports has regulations dictating salary caps, rookie pay, practice squad pay, etc, then college sports should be able to do something similar to ensure at least a degree of equity between players and teams.
Perhaps let individuals earn a set max NIL amount (like $100,000), and money beyond that goes into a general fund for even distribution to all other athletes.

for anything that happens in the NFL. He works for the NFL owners.. when he doe something it is because they want him to.

The Presidents, ad's, conference AD's all could have stepped in and given the NCAa some actual authority at any time.

INIstead.. every school has done nothing but chip away at the NCAA's authority and credibility for the last 30 years.

Fault aside, what’s your stance on having an NIL “cap/guidelines” similar to what I mention?

You can’t legally have a cap - that’s the entire point of the Supreme Court ruling.

Good point Vizz. Since this is really marketing money rather than a salary, it doesn’t fit the same as NFL caps, etc.
Is this here to stay in its current format?

It can be deterred. The NCAA can easily put transfer restrictions back in place. They can also strictly enforce inducement rules that already exist. The lack of policing inducement is what is causing the worst of this. Any foundation/charity/business that is paying players to play at a specific school is breaking the rules. All parties involved in such organizations should be treated as rogue boosters and forced to disassociate from the school and the school should be penalized for lack of institutional control. If public outcry was great enough, the federal government could create a tampering law that would make it a crime to induce players to play for specific schools. The only way to literally dictate what players can/can’t do would be to get anti-trust status which would then require a players union.

It is impossible to put the Genie back into the bottle. This model is out of control. Teams buying players from other schools with no restrictions. This was supposed to be money related to NIL but it has become buying recruits. The highest bidder will have the majority of 5* players(Texas A&M). Soon it will be the school willing to pay the most money to buy a National Championship in any sport.

Well wasn't the NCAA using two sets of rules for big money schools, and the smaller guys to show that they were actually doing something to offenders, like the ones without huge enrollments, and huge alumni associations!!!!

Re: The floodgates of NIL

May 2, 2022, 3:37 PM

That’s a really good idea and concept with the overages going to a common fund. The only flaw is why would anybody give over $100k for a particular player if only $100k can go to the player they want to buy for their school? There would never be any overages. People are trying to buy influence and stature as much as players - it’s a #%*€ measuring contest at this point.

to amateurism. When California made that law prohibiting anyone from allowing a player from making money off of NIL, they should have respectfully banned all California schools who broke the amateur rules from participating in NCAA events.

Everything else is just rearranging deck chairs on the Titanic. Lord if I have to listen to ESPN talk about players transferring to places that have more room under the cap and nonsense like that…it’s just becoming the NFL (which I don’t watch) with less control and lower quality of play.

What’s wrong with these people offering multimillion dollar contracts to 17 year olds to play at a school? How is that fun to watch? How much pride can you take in buying the best college team?

If college coach pay hadn't gotten to what it is, probably none of this would be like it is now. People in high places got tire of seeing the bidding war in college coaching salaries, period!!!

I hear you, but I view it a bit differently: A coach is in his/her career occupation. The other is a student that happens to be an athlete.

Re: The floodgates of NIL

Total non-sense with the comment a student that just happens to be an athlete. Most of the Football, Basketball players would never be accepted into the school if they were not an athlete.

That makes their scholarships even more valuable. Considering 95+% of them will not play beyond college, it is an absolute “leg up” opportunity for them. They will have earned a college degree (especially if you go to a school like Clemson), and they have an increased opportunity to have a career in coaching.

Re: The floodgates of NIL

May 3, 2022, 12:07 AM

You can't cap an individual's earnings. This isn't a communist country (yet), and NIL is defined as basically endorsement deals. The pay-to-play stuff is what Jimbo Fisher & Lincoln Riley are doing with A&M's reported $23M recruiting class, and USC's $8M 5* deal reported in March. More are coming. The only reason Lincoln Riley went to USC was because they told him they'd pay players. The state that started NIL... See the pattern now?

NCAA is #### scared of being sued, so they won't do anything. They're just trying to hang on and stay in power to keep cashing their checks.

What was needed was NCAA CFB "Profit Sharing" with a players association. That was the only equitable option which wouldn't have destroyed CFB. Maybe could've fostered insane parity with compensation tied to depth chart pos, starts, snaps, performance or something like that. NCAA had a chance to control it, and through sheer ineptitude got bulldozed in court. Now their control is gone. Possibly forever.

This is why Clemson fans need to support TigerImpact.org like ASAP. We have our own NIL collective, run by IPTAY's (now former) AD director. Get your checkbooks out.

I’m not spending one cent on NIL.

May 3, 2022, 12:40 AM

I’d rather do away with athletic scholarships at Clemson. Accept all students based on academic merit. Students who want to play sports at Clemson can be recruited, but they have to get accepted as a regular student first. Clemson can be in a conference with other like-minded institutions.

We wouldn’t have big time sports at Clemson, but we would have our integrity. As an alum, I can get behind that much more than I can this current charade.

Do that with all schools, and 70% of the ones getting the big bucks from posters and NIL, they aren't smart enough to get into college the same way as non sport students!!!

Re: The floodgates of NIL

May 3, 2022, 8:44 AM

I think the problem is that the NIL is based on the individual's ability to generate income, not an institutions limit of what to pay them. For instance, the Chicago Bears have a limit on what they can pay based on their overall payroll, but that does not prohibit a player from using his NIL to make millions of more dollars ..... not related to what the Bears pay him. I do not think the courts would allow a limit on income for a player who is selling the NIL.
