Personal POV on our Tigers, Dabo, and reactions to this season

Nov 15, 2021, 12:19 AM

The principles and virtues Dabo lives by and has applied at Clemson are the foundation of what’s happened here over his tenure.

Those foundational principles led the ascension of Clemson when initially most IPTAY members, students, and fans alike were more than skeptical to put it mildly.

People rarely mention on this forum how successful Dabo’s players are in the classroom with graduation rates and GPA’s that rival Stanford, Duke, and Notre Dame.

That’s special. It’s so special.

He’s not going to change those principles. They’re the stone instead of sand foundation.

The game’s changed; standards lowered, transfers available as “at will free agency”, and ALOT of money inserted via NIL.

All of this in the last couple of years.

Dabo now has the challenge of finding a way to uphold those principles that have developed and graduated future leaders, fathers, coaches, etc. while maintaining the level of performance on the field.

Appropriate criticism of the results on the field is just that, appropriate. In my personal view, however, the angry, sarcastic, tantrum-like vitriol displayed by many is not.

I encourage us to take a deep breathe, get behind the team, and let him work the problem. He’s earned it more than any coach in the country.

I agree, too. Just a weird year in a lot of ways. I hope Dabo will be with us for a long time. Looking forward to next year.

Great post! Perfectly sums up what is happening.

Dabo absolutely built a rock solid foundation, while many other programs will find themselves on sinking sand.

We’ll be just fine.

I am behind Dabo 110%. However, if you look at our staff, we have a bunch of former players that have no coaching experience. I know they understand Clemson's culture, and in some cases knows what it takes to be successful. But if you have a great QB, it can hide weaknesses. I think coach will solve the issues, but I would like to see some coaches that have college experience, and with all the firings, we should have our choice.

Other than CJ, which coaches had no experience?

Our QB was an OC when he was hired.
Our WR coach was a grad assistant under Jeff Scott for a number of years being groomed specifically to take over when JS left
TE was a coach at SCSU and Furman before Clemson. Then RB coach at Clemson before Dabo had to make him co OC else Morris was gonna take him to Texas.

CJ did not have experience coaching but his position group is one of the strongest on the team.

So it seems your claims does not hold water. Seems our fans want to latch onto anything (true or not) to explain the season instead of admitting that in sports some seasons go south and there is nothing you can do about it.

They're both valid points. Did they have experience, technically yes. Were, or are they tops in their respective fields? If Bama or OSU were in need of this expertise you speak of, are they coming after our coaches? And this applies to defense as well. Everyone wants CBV.

I'm not saying they aren't great coaches, maybe they are, maybe they aren't. Not in the profession to evaluate. But as a fan on the outside, you can see that 2 b2b generational QB did expose weaknesses. We don't seem to be as strong a development program as we were when certain coaches were here. The Scott's, the Hobby's.

Yes, we've had a lot of injuries, other teams have had injuries too. Dabo's roster management needs a makeover. At this level, you don't let yourself get to a point where the oline has to start walk ons. We recruit well, just not enough.

So you say that you aren't in a position to evaluate the coaches, but then you decided that the QBs exposed the weaknesses of said coaches. Either you are in a position to evaluate or you're not.

That's the point, isn't it Woody?

Nov 16, 2021, 8:38 AM

Fans can only judge results. We are just about last in offense in the country. Uconn had more YPC again our defense than we did against theirs. Development, roster management, misses in recruiting - all coaching issues that he pointed out.

The retort was simply a snarky reply saying "what do you know?". Hardly a debate but a lazy reply.

If football is a developmental game then you don't need to look beyond our QBs and OL to see there is an issue. Unless, of course, you're unwilling to acknowledge what we are witnessing every game this season.

I think we’ll see some significant changes. Some conducted publicly and others behind the scenes. Through his career Dabo sought out knowledge and advice from successful coaches and programs. He has humility.

I agree, if a new coach don't have the coaching experience to match the very talented high 4-5 star recruits that has loaded our roster on both sides of the ball, there is no way in H&11 or high water will an inexperienced coach be able to turn that type of HS talent into premium college talent!!!

Take Brent Venables, he has been coaching that type of talent for 25-30 years, and within all those years of coaching experience, he has learn how to develop that type of talent that can be ready to move up to the next level and be successful, and he has done that with more talented players than he can count. BV can go anywhere he wants to go and coach, no other coach that Dabo has hired could do that, and most of them couldn't have gotten a D-1 job at a top 10 school, and without close ties with Dabo, they wouldn't have been hired at Clemson, and I do believe that!!!!

While I agree that Dabo has earned the right to work the problem, I have not seem any positive results with 2 games to go; Have you?
Has he even given any thought to starting someone else at quarterback? I don't recall the injury status of Taisun Phommachanh at the start of the season ,but I don't recall him sitting DJ at any point and substituting one of the other 3 QB's listed on the roster .Maybe they are not as talented, but who knows?
And just yesterday Dabo reveals that Justyn Ross has been dealing with a stress fracture all season long. So why was he out there?
And why has he not put an extra set of eyes to help Tony Elliott. Recently, people seem to think Tony is the guy solely responsible ( from the offensive side of the ball) for those two National Championships ,but seem
to forget about Jeff Scott. But when you have a "BRILLIANT" ( how Dabo described him) Offensive Coordinator,
and you have "brilliance in the box", why do you need anybody else?
But lets look at the strange case of Tony Elliott ,whom I believe is as much of the problem as any. Problems such as his demeanor during press conferences, and comments like "We need to score more points"(Really) or that he was seeing improvement in DJ that he didn't want to bench him because "he didn't want to disrupt his rhythm". Please tell me where the rhythm is?
But the one that really makes me question whether or not Dabo is working the problem is his comment about the team being 'disrupted by "CROWD NOISE"( that calls a double REALLY).
No, I am not going to question Dabo's principle's but as an average fan, I have grown tired of the excuses. "WE ARE WHO WE ARE RIGHT NOW" has gotten me wondering exactly "WHO ARE WE RIGHT NOW"?

Guess you have missed the 7-3 record with the three losses by a handful of points? Guess you have missed the development of Beaux and Ship? Plenty to be thankful for if you look. On the other hand we are super short handed due to injuries and are super inexperienced in certain areas and those can’t be fixed this season

Some of the comments I hear from coaches reminds me of some of Tommy Bowdens press conferences. One that stands out to me was when asked about the loss "I think 50% of the teams that played today lost" I still have faith in Dabo based on what he has demonstrated he has the ability to do with the program. There seem to be so many things that are wrong and keeping us from maintaining the heights we had achieved. I don't claim to be a coach so I trust if we can make it through these last two games and then Dabo roll up his sleeves and get to the task of fixing them. The landscape has changed and I just hope we don't get left behind because we don't change with it.

Re: Personal POV on our Tigers, Dabo, and reactions to this season

Dabo took over a D-1 average Clemson team, and he made into what most around college FB called an elite FB team. Recent hires replacing coaches something has went wrong, and I truly believe it has been with some hires on the offensive side of the ball, and when Jeff Scott left, inexperience coaching has really shown it's self. Even though Jeff didn't have that much experience of actual coaching, he had a life time of experience following his dad Brad Scott at FSU as the OC back when FSU was an elite FB team!!! Some don't like to admit it but, with good talent, Brad Scott could build a strong offensive team, he just didn't do very well as a HC, but there has been a lot of very good OC's and DC's that didn't make good head coaches!!!!

Thanks for your comments. Dabo is going to show public respect for players and coaches as he has all along. He also has a proven track record of seeing things as they are and embracing change.

If I could give more than one thumbs up I would.

Since I've never coached a National Champion -- much less 2 -- I think I'll leave the corrections to the guys who have a PROVEN track record. Now, if we are struggling this much this time next year, then I think we would have a lot to discuss.

But this staff has earned (several) benefits of the doubt. Dabo has made the hard choices (firing Kevin Steele, Napier, and moving Pearman). If we could all breathe and see what happens in the off-season (and the first few games of next year), we might see that our anxiety, while understandable, was prematurely reactive.

They've earned it.

I think we are all a bit frustrated this season and we are taking it out on each other on the ole sports boards a bit. There are a few on here that see it as an opportunity to personally attack other posters and/or bring up politics - that's a shame but nothing new either.

In any organization, you have to adapt to many changes/challenges to survive and compete.

The challenges you mention are difficult though I think some of them are a little overblown as well.

One thing for sure, and I have said this many times, this will be an interesting off-season, to say the least.

Dabo has gotten Clemson on the Mountain 6 years in a row and King of the Mountain twice. It's been a crazy Couple years with Covid, transfer portal, NIL and a lot of injuries this year. If and when Robbie Caldwell retires or takes on other duties I would love to see Dabo get someone like he did with Brent Venables that recruits want to come and play for. Getting a lot of those Big Nasties attention hoping to play for that coach.
All that said I would not trade Dabo for any coach in the Nation. GO TIGERS!!
