Chad Kelly - First Hand Account

Sep 5, 2012, 5:27 PM

Just wanted to clear everything up about Chad. This is my dad's account but I'm using it for now. I'm a freshman at Clemson, and I'm taking the same course that Chad was in today when him and the professor got into an argument. Basically, the professor told Chad he was being childish and needed to grow up because Chad tried to start something with one of the baseball players last Friday. The argument last Friday happened as soon as class was over outside of the building, and the professor saw it. So today, he told the entire class that one student(Swag Kelly) acted childish and a bit immature and he will call the police next time something like this happens. He also said the baseball player, who I will not name, handled it very well by simply walking away. Chad then decided to mouth off at the professor. They had a few words back and forth, and Chad was mad at the professor for calling him out in front of the entire class. Also, the professor called him out for wearing his hood on in the building. After the argument, Chad put his head down and went to sleep. As for the cops, some idiotic student decided to call the cops during class. Other than that, we can all agree that Mr. Swag Kelly has some serious growing up to do.

I agree, i'd be pissed if i was an average student pumping 15k a year into a school only to be made to look like a d1ck in front of my peers for no reason. This should go double for football players, especially good ones, who generate considerably more $ for the university than any 1 professor.

Sep 5, 2012, 5:41 PM [ in reply to i wouldnt care if he wasnt a football player.. ]

First, two things
1. I have no idea if this is a true story
And
2. I have no idea what the initial conflict started over

That said, the prof can run his class how he likes, and if he sees a football player (a student representing the school beyond the classroom) act a fool then it isn't BS to call him on it. I have no idea how it was handled (what was actually said) but if the story is true then I laugh at the folks who are painting the prof in a bad light. Don't want to get called out and embarrassed for acting foolishly? Don't act that way. And when an authority figure calls you on it don't be a punk about it.

Grow up indeed.

with just about anything for the sake of winning football games; meanwhile professors are expecting the non-student athletes to perform as expected academically. I love Clemson sports but right is right, and if I see a student-athlete getting away with ######## I expect him to be called out on it.
Maybe when some of you students on this board get out in the real world you'll see that some times you work with people who are lazy, selfish and only looking out for themselves. Those are the kinds of people who only respond to being called out openly before their peers before realizing they need a serious attitude check.

Classic behavior of a student only trying to get class interrupted further. Seems to be a mighty unorganized class. You shouldn't have class room management problems like this in college, even in freshman classes.

First and foremost, I hate egotistical jerks. However, even IF this story is true, the professor is in the wrong. The prof has every right to control his/her classroom, and to some degree, the common areas of the building, but not outside. Indeed, the prof overstepped. First of all, I can't imagine a professor would have used any specific student's name anecdotally trying to make a point about his opinion of acceptable behavior. CK may have actually volunteered his identity rather being singled out, I don't know. Secondly, if the prof DID ID CK specifically, that was wrong to do no matter what the kid's status was and should have been dealt with one on one and not in a public forum like that. Lack of maturity notwithstanding there's no need to humiliate anybody that way.

Re: Chad Kelly - First Hand Account

Sep 6, 2012, 8:35 AM

The question really comes down to whether the professor said Chad Kelly's name or not in front of the class. Clearly whatever took place outside of class was bad enough that the professor remembered it and wanted to bring it up in class that that behavior is not acceptable at Clemson. I've had professors talk about what they've seen outside of class, learning isn't just confined to what is inside your textbook. However, if he did single out Chad by name, then the professor was unprofessional in doing so and should have talked to him before or after class (but from the OP's account it doesn't sound like Chad was singled out - who knows....)

Many of you are bashing the professor here, and claiming him to be a "liberal, hippie, athlete-hater." I don't think that's fair at all.

While I wasn't there, and don't know exactly what happened, the OP did clarify that the professor never singled CK out in class; Kelly himself volunteered his own identity in regard to what the professor was talking about. Many of you say that the professor has no right to bring up something that happened outside of class, in class -- and there's some truth to that. But, it's certainly possible that the altercation started in class (through class discussion or something) and then continued, and escalated after class. In that case, the professor does have a right to address it.

These assertions that the professor should be fired or have to meet with the dean are ridiculous. Contrary to what a lot of you seem to think, I think we should give the professor the benefit of the doubt, rather than an 18-year old kid (who happens to be a known instigator). If we learn more that casts the professor in an unfavorable light, then we'll go from there.
