What is the reason coaches like to defer

When they win the coin toss? I would think it would be best to play offense and try to score early and get the lead. I’m sure some feel like having the ball to begin the second half is better but half time adjustments must be considered in the decision. I expect that holding for a three and out to begin the game is good but can you count on doing that not knowing what your opponent will do?
Oregon just agreed with me as they took the ball and scored quickly.

Get the ball first after seeing what the game plan is and making adjustments. Get the momentum quickly in the second half and try to keep it.

That would be ok but good teams are able to make adjustments. Especially at halftime. Risking being down on the first possession seems like a big risk to me.

Second half is more important than first half. Getting the ball first in the second half is more important than getting ball first in first half.

In a road game like we will be in you want to defer and hope to hold them to a field goal at best to take some of the juice out of the stadium.

To me I think it comes down to where a team feels like they have the edge. If the defense is the strength of your team, you want to set the tone with it early. If the offense is, then you send them out first.
One of the other reasons often referenced is the critical 8 minute window between halves. Meaning the last and first four of the halves. This is a huge swing in the game if you are able to score in the last four of the first half and then again in the first four of the second half.

Dabo is the best at clock management in the first half. He'll attempt to end the half (or near the end) with a score or a chance to score...then open the 2nd half with possession.

It allows you to control the middle 8 minutes of the game. It gives the team more options going into the half. Also, by scoring just before the half and just after it you can create a 14 point swing. Clemson has excelled at this for years and it is a major point of emphasis from the coaching staff.

With good clock management you can steal a possession, or if nothing else give the other team an extra constraint at the end of the half if they have the ball.

UCLA won the coin toss and elected to defer. Then, Texas said they'll kickoff to start the first half. LOL. Of course, UCLA elected to exercise their option to receive the ball to start the 2nd half, essentially getting a free turnover. Texas lost by 3. Charlie Strong is not a good coach.

I think the idea is it benefits you both ways. if you are winning at the half, it gives you a chance to widen the lead or end the game. If you are losing, then you make your adjustments and get back out there and see if they worked.

"relevant" in terms of the flow of the game. The initial red-hot emotion and fire that some teams start the game with, especially rivalry games and/or high stakes games... that has all been spent. You may have come out of the tunnel all jacked up and spitting fire, but now you've been hit in the mouth, you're tired, and the game is settling down into the normal - whoever executes better, avoids mistakes, and makes big plays is gonna win. And the halftime adjustments are in place. There's a reason these coordinators make a couple mill a year. They had a half to analyze what worked and what didn't, what you're doing, etc. Now it's time to get down. Gimme the damm ball.

Teams that defer usually like to score before the half and then score again after halftime. So it’s an opportunity for back to back possessions and points.

to score in the 2nd half than the 1st. If you're down, then it gives you a chance to initiate the momentum at the beginning of the 2nd half, and, if you have a lead, then it gives you a chance to preserve that as well. How many times have we seen a team score a lot in the first part of the game only to watch them go conservative and the other team starts charging back in the 2nd?
Totally conjecture here, but I'm sure it's been well thought through.

Typically the first and possibly second offensive possessions are scripted. You're going to do what you planned to do all week regardless of what happens. Being down 7-0 after the first drive isn't going to change your approach. But being down 7 points at halftime and getting the ball coming out with a chance to even it or being up and having a chance to put real pressure on the opposing team with a quick multi-score lead is a huge advantage.
