My Idea to Fix College Football

Jan 2, 2015, 1:42 PM

Let's have a six-team play-off with the top two teams getting a first-round bye week. Does that not work mathematically? All Power Five conference champs will be represented as well as one at-large bid. Such an arrangement should make conference play even more meaningful while allowing that there may be one deserving team that didn't win its conference. Why have a conference title game if it carries little significance? By extension, the regular season will continue to have import because, to win one's conference title, one has to have performed well in the regular season.

The at-large bid will be polled by a committee that looks heavily at in-conference and out-of-conference strength of schedule and, of course, overall record. Thus, schools will think twice about scheduling four cupcakes.

I have long been hesitant about an eight-team playoff. Normally, a seventh or eighth-ranked team has two losses and no conference title. It is too deep in the barrel to be bobbing for worthy teams. Such an arrangement would also cheapen the regular season as two defeats won't ruin the year, especially and almost certainly for an SEC school.

What exactly does that fix?

One of the two teams you felt deserved to be in, Baylor, lost to Michigan State yesterday. So now Michigan State whose only losses were to the two teams playing for the national title, needs to be included? At this point, I could make the argument that Michigan state is the #3 team in the nation right now, beating a Baylor team that TCU did not.

It doesn't matter how many teams you take we'll argue about the next 2 or 3 that didn't make it.

SEC teams in the playoffs. That 6th spot will always to go to a 2nd SEC team.
The polls this year had Baylor #5, TCU #6 and Miss State #7.

If it were a 6 team playoff, just like the top four spots moved around to get "better" matchups, that #7 Miss State team would be moved up a spot. After all, a TWO loss SEC team is "superior" to any one loss team from another conference. And Michigan State would not be in.... I have heard all year how "bad" the Big 10 is. Even heard how Ohio State was not deserving to be in the top 4.

6 teams fix nothing... not sure 8 does either. Just look at the polls and see how they would be manipulated to get the max number of SEC teams into the playoff.
