I'm here to tell you all.. B12 expansion is very much alive

Jun 15, 2012, 12:28 PM

I can tell you all for 100% certainty that Big 12 expansion and how it pertains to Clemson University is still very much alive. I am not here to say that it 100% will happen or it won't happen. All I am saying for certain.. Is that there has been MUCH legal pressure.. Let me say that again.. Clemson and FSU have both received a BOAT LOAD of legal pressure from not only the ACC but from some it's member institutions. FSU and Clemson both are in a very fragile period legally.. The ACC and it's current member institutions have very much to lose in the event that FSU and Clemson depart the conference. The CU BOT, TDP, and Dabo are ALL very much involved in this process and have been briefed and coached in exactly what to say and what not to say.. One slip of the tongue from any of them could cause a legal fire storm that could cost the University millions of dollars. Nothing will happen with the Big 12 until the new commissioner takes office. In the meantime, during this buffer period,, the ACC and it's members are doing everything they can involving legal scare tactics, and trying to find any scrap of evidence that FSU and/or Clemson are doing/have been doing anything that could give them legal grounds to sue them and force their hands to stay in the conference.

Again,
I am not here stating that we will go or we won't go.. All I will say for certain that don't believe everything you read coming out of the Clemson camp saying this thing is over. These quotes are out there in the media for the sole reason to protect the University from legal actions from the outside.

Do know that NOTHING will come out in regards to an actual move by either side until after the new commish of the Big 12 takes office.. That's a best case scenario.. More likely scenario is that there won't be anything until TCU and WVU join officially.

In regards to actual expansion "rumblings" from the Big 12 standpoint... I hear the only member not on board is Texas.. And from their stand point.. Why would they want two more teams that could threaten their status as the "top dog" per say in the conference and in the national picture??? As of right now,, Texas has been down the last couple of years but they will be back.. They have too much talent not to rise back up.. Realistically, the only two teams that could really challenge them on a regular basis would be OK St. and OU. Why would they want to add two capable teams that could cause them "problems" or become obstacles for them to reach the top of the B12 standings or possibly even a MNC appearance?? They are set up monetary wise with the birth of the LHN. Texas doesn't really benefit a bit with the addition of CU and FSU. The other teams would benefit greatly with the addition.. More money with additional tv money and conference championship game.. And it further strengthens the conferences reputation as a power football conference by adding two prominent teams with great fan bases, tradition, and stadiums. You better believe WVU will be clammoring and doing some SERIOUS politicking with the other B12 institutions in an effort to get some east coast running mates with them.

Golden Domers are in negotiations with NBC to extend their contract with NBC/Comcast. They are in a hold pattern to see what comes out of these BCS meetings before they give the yea/nay to NBC regarding extension of their exclusive.

Wrapping up.. No one on the BOT, athletic department, or coaching staff WANTS to leave the ACC.. He!!, why would we? I've always said FSU, VT, and Clemson have the easiest road to the national championship by being in the ACC. Take care of business with the middle of the pack teams and get a big win against either VT or FSU and you are in the top 3 for sure. Clemson proved that this year getting up into the top 5. Go undefeated and you have a 90% chance of being in the top 2. This year was crazy with their being so many undefeated teams for so long. There is no other conference in the country that provides as easy a path to the big game. Getting back to the point. Everyone involved from an administration level realize that Clemson CANNOT be left out of the potential Big 4 conference scenario that is currently brewing and eventually will occur. They realize we cannot continue to compete at a high level while there is such a disparity in the financial shortfalls in relation to other conference payouts to its members. It's a necessary action that must occur.. Like it or not. Just sit back and relax. Not going to do any of you any good to sit and read TNET all day every day and worry about every little thing you read.

My 2 cents

did the BOT Chairman say we are in the ACC forever. He plainly said Clemson would listen to other options if the subject seriously came up - or words to that effect. I say that's good enough right now - the horse has been dead now for several days - time to quit beating on it.

Re: I still don't understand what the new commish has to do with

Jun 15, 2012, 12:47 PM

Not so much less/more legal with a new commish taking over.. More so on it being a fresh start for the conference. Him having the ability to be known for years as the "pillar of change" for a new B12. (Hypothetically speaking) The addition of new teams would be his call to fame so to speak. His first order of business he got done as new commish was pulling in very respectable teams and bring the conference championship game back and getting the member institutions more money.

I don't know if we could rally enough of the votes between the member institutions to warrant such a move. I'm not sure of the exact number.. But I'm sure it would take more than just a majority vote. It would probably take 2/3 and I don't see enough of the schools taking that stance.

Though I think Clemson(and FSU for that matter) would both rather stay in the ACC, it would be in both of their best interest to use this to once and for all show the leadership of the conference that Basketball does not run things anymore. It's football viewership that is top dog. They should be all means take a stand (whether publicly or in private)to get this conference on the right track.

I hate to go all York , but if changes aren't made, the football schools will be bolting this time next year. A very large percentage of the TV $$ is because of football and the member schools should be spending that money to better their program.

We live in a world where someone hears something from a guy in the third stall down in the bathroom, and it is like, ‘That’s the fact. That’s the way it is.’ But it is so far removed from reality and it just takes a life of its own. It has been a real distraction. We are 1000 percent committed to the ACC.”

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-10yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Yes it was said

Jun 15, 2012, 3:32 PM

The big unsaid word that was not included at the end of that quote line... "today"

As it stands at 3:18 pm on 6/15/2012.. Clemson is in fact 1000% IN and 1000% committed to the ACC... today...

That's all they can.. and that's all they will say.. They can't say anything more.. Clemson needs no more distractions with it until something is done and ready to be moved on. Until that time.. no matter how it is worded.. Clemson is a part, and will be a part of the ACC until something changes.. Change can come as quickly as a day or a year in some cases.

If you followed the A&M and Mizzou storylines last year you will see a lot of the same story lines and quotes. They were committed to the conference they belonged until that intermediary knocked on the door and said "hey fellas, we got this thing done,, you guys are in if you wanna be" Then magically out of thin air.. The ESPN ticker streaks across saying that A&M has withdrawn from the Big 12.. Wait a minute everyone says... I thought that was in the past.. I thought their Admin said they were committed to staying in the Big 12 and keeping the traditions & rivalries alive just last week???? Now we are withdrawing and putting in an app to become members of the SEC... Things can change in a matter of a day and sometimes in a matter of a few hours.. The way things stand today don't necessarily mean they'll be the same way tomorrow or the next day.

The admin at Clemson feeds information to the media and the public in a very calculated manner. Everything that is released whether it be in a statement or a press conference is thought out in advance.. Information or in a lot of cases MIS information is put out there for a reason. BOT Wilkerson doesn't just up and say one day.. I think I'm gonna give a statement to the media today that we are "In the ACC" In this particular case, He's more than likely told when and what to say by a PR firm out of state contracted by the University and under a very strict non-disclosure agreement.

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I think the SEC is probably a "better" Conference then ..

Jun 15, 2012, 3:39 PM

the B12.... now, I do not think the B12 is a better Conference then the ACC ... BUT, we all agree that IF the SEC were to invite Clemson, of course we would take a look... NOW, as said before, whatever Clemson does, it has to be in the best interest of Clemson University as a whole.
