This may come as a surprise to some of you, but I have suspected it for some time.

How about soccer or golf? I think we pretty much expect to compete for conference and national championships pretty much every year in both of those sports.
And that times of the women’s golf and soccer have been very good as well, but we have more potential. I would like to see us get even better.
I don’t care what anyone says, the ACC is not as good in basketball as it used to be, it was tougher in the 80s, and we had more success back then. And it was much harder to get into the NCAA tournament as well. I look and see what Miami and Virginia Tech and Florida State have done since joining the conference and there’s no excuse for us to not be at the very top of the second tier every year in conference. Louisville, duke, North Carolina, they will almost always be the top programs but there is absolutely no reason we can’t be at the top of the next tier which would make us competitive in the conference tournament every year and put us in the NCAA tournament.

Unfortunately many of our “fans” don’t seem to understand what is required to build a great basketball program for a historically low achieving program. Hint: cycling through coaches hoping for better results is not the answer

You’re clearly confusing Clemson with other programs. If we have a problem with coaches it’s holding onto them way too long because they’re good people.
And I totally disagree. We have had some success in basketball back when it was harder. We were a much better program in the late 70s through early 90s when the ACC was harder and it was harder to get into the NCAA tournament.
Tree Rollins, Vinny Hamilton, Horace Grant, Elden Campbell, Dale Davis, Greg Buckner, and other really good players.
The ACC is easier now than ever. The NCAA tournament is easier to get in now. I see what FSU, VT, and Miami have done since joining the conference and there’s no reason we can’t be at the top of the second tier after UNC, duke, and Louisville. I think we should be competing for The top of that second tier almost every year.
I don’t give two craps about the past. We just started a softball program and look at what it’s doing.
The past is the past. The future is about making a commitment. We have better facilities right now than we have ever had. Again in an easier ACC. We just have not made the commitment to being a consistently good basketball program.
Miami, Florida state, Virginia Tech, Georgia Tech, North Carolina, Virginia, NC State, are all trying to be excellent at football and basketball as well as baseball. We simply aren’t making the commitment!

56 percent is pretty much a high water mark for Clemson basketball. Most Clemson coaches have stayed four years and left for greener pastures. Places that supported basketball.

Since basketball is the only non football program that brings in money.
Maybe the conclusion should be that assistants are what drive basketball success and the head coach drives success in baseball.
If you think about it, it makes sense cuz in basketball you have to successfully recruit like 3 or 4 guys a year. So you need like a dozen assistants who make 7 figure salaries. Otherwise you’re not supporting the program. Ok now i get it.
