Is it “French Toast” or “Egg Bread”?
Apr 21, 2021, 9:08 AM

For me growing up it was egg bread. I didn’t know it was actually called French toast until around age 10. Has anyone else heard it called “egg bread” ? I often wonder because when I say it people look at me kinda like I look at them when they ask for a pop

I was born in South Carolina, raised for 9 years in Alabama, then returned to South Carolina.
Are you from another region of the country?

I too was born here in SC. Only lived one other place and that was Birmingham AL as an adult. I’ve just always wondered if it was just a name my grandma made up for it or if people actually call it egg bread.

Never heard of Egg Bread either. As for the pop, when a northerner asks me if I want a pop, I say no. I already have one but I call him Dad.

Born in Georgia and raised in South Carolina -Never heard of "egg bread" and we never had french toast - we had ""Ho-Cakes"" ( another name for a large biscuit ) -- made a hole with your knuckle and poured on some ""Grandma's Molasses"" -- leftover biscuits were buttered & toasted, the next morning for breakfast __________________GO TIGERS !!!!

The large biscuits were known as "Cathead" biscuits. Make a hole in the middle of the biscuit and fill with real butter and your syrup of choice.
My wife nd I were in San Francisco and decided to have breakfast at a restaurant near our hotel that advertised their hot cakes as "The best in the West". The waitress came to take our order and I decided I would take the short stack since I was having a couple of other items. When our order arrived, there were two hot cakes on a huge platter and the hot cakes were the size of the platter. The melted butter and syrup would run off the platter onto the table if I placed them on top of the hot cakes. So, I dug a hole in the middle of the hot cakes and filled the hole with butter and syrup. As I ate my way from the center of the hot cakes to the sides, I added butter and syrup when needed. Needless to say, I could not eat all of that "short stack". Those were the largest hot cakes I've ever seen in a restaurant.

In Cope, SC my grandmother called it egg bread. My wife grew up in the "city" of Orangeburg and her family ate French toast.

Skip the salt and pepper... Add a couple of pinches of powdered sugar to each before serving.
Just use Half-n-Half...
