One reason a six team playoff was probably never considered.

Can you imagine the upraor over who is #2 and who is #3? The third and 4th place teams don't get a bye. There would be all sorts of screaming about the committee being biased toward whomever the #2 seed is.

At least with 12 teams, the 5th place team can be told, "Look, you don't get a bye, but at least you got into the playoffs. And, you get to play that first game at home."

There will still be wailing and gnashing of teeth, but far less than if it were a 6 team playoff.

It should be an 8 team playoff with no byes. The top 4 teams play the first round games at home. Then the 4 remaining teams play in the bowl system like it is now.
The playoff should be the Power 5 conference champions, the top Group of 5 champion and no more than 2 teams from any conference.

2 vs 5
3 vs 4

Winner of 1 vs 6 gets bye.
