Finally...got to see the Tigers in person

Oct 1, 2012, 9:46 AM

Well after 20 years as a Naval Officer and now following my wife around (who is also a Naval Officer) there was finally a game close enough for us to get to! I can't tell you how many memories it brought back to be in the stands watching the boys play again. And even more importantly, my son (who is 4 yo) got to go to his first game! Yes it was expensive and cold and dreary, but I didn't feel any of it! I was floating on clouds all day! After every play my little boy would yell "Go Tigers". After a while all the people around us (all BC fans) were turning around to cheer HIM on! It was an experience I will never forget. Now on to the game....

I was actually encouraged by the defense. Yes we were playing a team that can't run and we missed some tackles but I never saw anyone not hustling. I came away with the impression that it is not a lack of athletism or desire, just inexperience. Breeland and Peters can play. I have always thought that Robinson was overmatched (at least at this point in his development) and it showed. The linebackers were everywhere. Their lateral movement was good when BC ran the ball (which neither I nor the BC fans could understand why they kept trying to do???) The line is ok but does not put any pressure on the QB. There were multiple times I just concentrated on the line play and they run up to the offensive linemen and just engage them...no swim moves...no spins, just run up and hit the OF lineman square. I don't know if this is something the coaching staff is teaching so the linebackers have a clean shot but on pass plays it means the QB has all day to throw.

The offense is a beast. The BC fans were totally disgusted with their defenses play. They kept saying "we just can't stop anything they do!!!". It really disgusted them that we kept running the flanker screens and getting 8-10 yards/play. It is certainly different in person! I was at Clemson from '82 to '86 and wow is this not the Danny Ford era football team (both good and bad! Imagine this offense with that defense! NC contender every year!) I have heard some criticize the play call by Morris when he called the flea flicker to Hopkins. I was sitting right in front of the play and NUK had two steps on both of the guys guarding him. The BC stadium had some weird winds swirling around and the ball came out of Tahj's hand and just ballooned up into the air. It was wobbling like a wounded duck and was at least 5-10 yds short. I thought at first just a bad throw but the kickers were having fits too. Once the ball got to a certain height it would balloon up or get knocked down. The flags on top of the stadium were standing straight out for most of the game. I really can't fault our offense for much. They seemed to be able to do whatever they wanted to on a regular basis and were really only stopped when BC made a good play (batted balls down, or caused a fumble with a good hit, etc.)

Well those were my impressions anyway. We loved the game and it was nice to be the only fans left at the end (BC fans left very early!). Seems like we had the whole stadium to ourselves. Would have preferred to be in the Valley (back in God's country) but it was really cool to see the team play again!

You know what is funny? I have only ever seen the tigers lose in person once...to LSU in the Peach Bowl (I think!). When I was at Clemson we DID NOT lose at home. I did see BC or Georgia tie us once.

Thanks for all the comments. It was my wifes first game too (she went to University of Wisonsin - nuff said). She loved it and said it was very different than seeing the badgers play. Even though she watched the jumbo tron the whole game instead of the real players! I told her I was sorry she couldn't change the channel to Lifetime. She laughed and then took the binoculars cause she wanted to look at the players tight butts. Oh well.

Thanks for your service to our country, and for your wife's service, too. Great that you got to go to the game, but even greater that you took your son. It was an experience he never will forget. Trust me on that.

three years on active duty, and my first return to Death Valley was quite an experience. I don't remember the game, but the thrill of being among the orange-clad faithful was something else. Glad you had the opportunity and best wishes to you and your family!

I took my 18 yo son to the game. It was definitely not his first game, nor his first trip to Boston, but was a weekend trip we will always remember.

Thank you to you and your wife for making the sacrifice to serve our country. And I hope this is only the beginning of many more games you and your son get to attend. Those times together are priceless.

Thanks to all the Tiger Family

Thank you all for the good wishes. I really miss Death Valley and can honestly say that it was the best 4 years of my life (just wish I had known it at the time) but I can honestly say that watching my son at the game caused me to tear up a few times. Another generation of tiger is on the way! He is already saying he is going to "throw the ball like number 10 for the tigers when he grows up". Now I just have to convince mom that football is not "really" that dangerous!
