On This Date: 1948 (10)Clemson- 20 The Citadel- 0

Dec 4, 2019, 8:29 AM

12/4/1948
Charleston, SC

This is the only game Clemson has played on December 4th, and unsurprisingly i can't find any write ups on it.

The 1900 team didn’t lose but was only 6-0, so the 1948 team was the first to record double-digit victories while going unbeaten and untied. Clemson finished the season 11-0, but didn’t sniff a national title – that honor went to a 9-0 Michigan team. The team was composed of an eclectic cast of characters such as John Poulos, Fred Cone and Phil Prince.

Led by Cone and a stingy defense that recorded five shutouts, Clemson methodically built an 11-0 season. In a 6-0 win against N.C. State, Clemson held the Wolfpack for four downs on the 1-yard line. The Tigers also blanked Presbyterian, Furman, Duquesne and The Citadel and slipped past Auburn in a game played in Biloxi, Mississippi, 7-6. In a 13-7 win against South Carolina, Prince blocked a punt that was returned for a touchdown by Oscar Thompson.

At the conclusion of the regular season, the 1948 team became Clemson’s second bowl team, putting the finishing touches on its perfect season with a 24-23 victory against Missouri. Approximately 25,000 Clemson fans made the trip to Jacksonville, Florida, for the Gator Bowl, and for years the bowl’s leaders credited the Tigers and their fans for essentially “saving the bowl.”

My Dad played on this team in 1948. He played left end behind John Poulos who you mention in your post. Poulos was 20 pounds heavier and got most of the playing time in front of Dad. Dad wasn't a "star" on that team but played enough to letter all three years. In the undefeated 1948 season, he caught a pass that set up the winning TD against Wake. And he had a nice gain on an end around in the Gator Bowl against Missouri.

Dad died 15 years ago and missed this great Tigers run. He would have been so proud of his beloved Tigers. My hope is that he's had the best seat in the house over the last decade.

Go Tigers!

Great post and pics. Thanks. We should cclaim this team as a National Champ. Just as much right to it as many of Bamas

That was my dad's Junior year. He wasn't on the team.

Post piqued my curiosity and I found this:
