Terrence Oglesby, Goodman,Borzello talk Brad Brownell future

at Clemson on Field of 68 last night. I watch this show a lot since I love college basketball. Last night's show was hot seat coaches and what will happen at a lot of places. TO was mainly there to listen, but did give feedback on what he has heard since he is in the area and played at Clemson.

I posted Jeff Borzello's article on ESPN the other day on a link. He had insight from what coaches have heard. Jeff Goodman is even better than Borzello as a big college basketball insider on rumors and what he is hearing in the industry.

They talked specifically about Brad Brownell at the 21 minute mark. Goodman asked TO first what he has heard and feels, and TO said he feels Brad will be back by 65 percent, but Goodman and Borzello revered it on him and said it more likely he will be gone. All three feel like Brad should try to get another job somewhere because it eventually it becomes just a matter of time.

Goodman feels like That Graham Neff probably wants someone young like himself that he can grow with the program. Goodman and Borzello both gave the two candidates who I also would have on top, Niko Medved at Colorado State and Matt McMahon at Murray State.

Really glad they had this show and mentioned Brad Brownell. Really interesting discussion. here is the link:

TO was trying to be as impartial as possible, but he was wrong that Clemson would have made it a couple of years ago when things got shut do Clemson was not going to make it to the NCAAT that season, and probably not the NIT.

TO was caugh in a tough spot since he is knows the staff well since he was a grad assistant under Brad.

TO says he is staying 65/35, I would go with that and I think he was even being aggressive. Folks have already picked their lane and the only question is Neff's lane. TO is in the stay lane... but I think it is more about baseball right now

I agree, Brad was outside looking in in 2020. But that being said, the 2014 snub was a NCAA year in all things but thew invite.

I doubt TO gave us his true feelings. When he said BB

was likely staying he added when asked why "what has changed in the last 12 years" and "I've got to live here" which is another way of saying, "if we've kept him this long with his track record, it seems unlikely that management would choose to let him go after another year of the same general malaise."

Re: I doubt TO gave us his true feelings. When he said BB

[1]
Mar 2, 2022, 1:24 PM

Yeah, but I read his "true feelings" to being that he is sticking around. Basically, his post-construction pattern is "a good year, then a down year". If he thought he was gone, then "living here" would not be a concern, but rather the current staff is hanging around.

As far as the last 12 year comment, that is mostly saying that the admin isn't going to do a knee-jerk in a 7 game slump. Just isn't part of the culture.

flag link

I agree with TO to a certain extent. Coach Brownell is

[2]
Mar 1, 2022, 12:44 PM

likely to return given that "nothing has changed over the last 12 years" or words to that effect. Each year we pretend that we are poised for a dramatic performance improvement that doesn't materialize.

I do disagree that we were going to ANY postseason play the year that Covid hit. Love TO, though. He's got a good voice for sports media.

Yeah, but they did say Brad Brownell was movable and probably should look for something else because eventually the past results shows it will eventually happen.

TO is great. he should get a big contract with a network calling games soon. Knows the game extremely well, and also has a great personality for the medium.

The ACC Tournament starts next week, so I guess we

On a side note, Jim Larranaga will be 73 in September. <img border=">

Yeah, DRad is not making that move since Miami is making the NCAAT. Could see JL retiring after the season. There are always a couple of movements where a coach retires. Miami is bringing a very good recruiting class next season.

Yeah,TO said it will eventually come to the forefront after the season soon what is going to happen with Brad.

If Larranaga retires, DRAD owes us a favor.

Mar 1, 2022, 3:06 PM

I wasn't suggesting that DRAD would fire Jim because he is old. I think that is illegal. <img border="> It's a good time for him to retire on a high note after struggling the last few years.

This is the first year in a long while that the future does look a bit brighter--maybe a lot brighter if no portal exits by this team's contributors and the 2 'bigs' on the Tiger's roster now put in some heavy work in the off-season. With Hall and these 2 freshman big guys, it isn't hard to believe next season's team will be a better squad and win many more games.
Chase Hunter has been a pleasant surprise and Dawes w/Honor make a decent backcourt with Chase. That leaves or for Tyson to return[?] or one of the new recruits to make some impact.

How many times in the past 10 could you have stated the same thing - simply hoping?
I am very excited about our inside play.I think we have the most talented team that Clemson has had in many years.

I also think that perhaps with the ACC so poor this year - had a change been made last year - might have resulted in a much better result than fighting to not be in the bottom 3 in the league.

The only reason you posted this is because it aligned with your perspective. If all three would have said BB will-should stay, you would not have posted the link.

Seems like all the folks in your camp loved to rag JudgeKeller for anything positive he said about the program but I’m at least glad to know who is the president of the Fire BB Brigade. Hopefully y’all have a secret handshake and some code words that only those with that special basketball knowledge are privy to.

Good luck getting Neff to fire BB as it will surely make your day. I hope BB moves on because Clemson basketball fans don’t deserve a quality coach who doesn’t cheat, performs his job with the highest degree of ethics, represents Clemson honorably and graduates players.

no ,it was an interesting discussion.

If Goodman and Borzello agreed with TO, I would have still posted it because a lot of fans are curious what is going to happen. The fact that the team has won two straight and has a great chance to win these two last games probably means Brad is coming back.

But, you got to face, it with small buyout for a major University that Brad has, every season it is going to be more of the same. The only thing that would change it is if Brad has three straight NCAATs, and then maybe Clemson would give him a larger buyout with a new contract extension.

Nope...brooks had it correct as you simply posted something which supported your views.

Personally i hope brad decides to move on so you can finally understand how the system works. We will not spend the money needed to get the coach we want and if they are successful they will move on quickly given we are not a destination job. We will have a coaching carousel of broken dreams like so many other schools. If only we would have done the things required to improve the program now it could have all been avoided.

Yes, I still don't get how a lot of people say all those things, but never saying anything about winning. Some people come to the conclusion that Clemson will never be better when they actually have. two of the last three coaches before Brad went to three straight NCAATs. So those fans don't care if they found a coach who was from Clemson, they still think he would want to leave if they won consistently? You got to keep trying to win, and one day the next goal would be to keep that guy who wins consistently happy and not want to leave.

Goodman in the video actually said Brad was the nicest person on the planet. It is not personal, but it is a business. Get real...

Rick Barnes and Purnell did not coach in the expanded ACC. Comparing Brownell's tenure to their tenure is as silly as comparing basketball to football. Purnell lost in the first round of the tournament. Barnes made the sweet 16 once.

College sports teams are not a business. You treat them as a business. The point of college is education, not to win national titles.

Re: Let’s be honest

You can't compare him to other Clemson coaches. You can only grade him on the test he writes himself...

military_donation.jpg flag link

Im guessing you are close to Brad?

[3]
Mar 1, 2022, 1:35 PM

bc thats a pretty poor take on the situation. Based on that then we never should have fired Tommy West?

It is absolutely exhausting having conversations about Brownell anymore bc they are always the same and people are in one camp or the other. At this point, it is what it is. I agree with Goodman and Borzello that BB should look for another job, if he can land one elsewhere. Neff certainly cannot give him any kind of extension right now without justification...and its just not there based on performance. BB is a quality coach, but its a results business and X's and O's dont mean crap if you dont eventually win. Honestly, I know some HS coaches who could probably coach circles around alot of college guys but they dont want or cant step into the next level bc of the other challenges involved.

The defense of BB is honorable and warranted, but so are the criticisms...its just real talk.

As opposed to aligning with YOUR perspective?

[3]
Mar 1, 2022, 2:38 PM

The bottom line is Brownell doesn't win !!!! Just three NCAA Tournament appearances in twelve seasons (one of which was with another coaches players) is unacceptable by any and every measure.

If "best is the standard" after twelve seasons, it is abundantly clear that Brownell is not the coach who can achieve it.

On the other hand, if you're content with mediocrity and inconsistency, Brad's your guy.

You dont' explain what about Clemson entitles it to go to the tournament more than 1 out of 4 years compared to other programs. Why should Clemson be able to outrecruit the majority of other programs in your view?

There are a lot of competitive basketball programs compared to football. You and others pretend like you don't know this.

If teams like Auburn, Texas Tech and Baylor can do it...

[1]
Mar 2, 2022, 7:49 AM

there is no justifiable reason why Clemson can't.

One of the biggest obstacles is a lack of commitment by the Clemson administration. They have made it abundantly clear they don't care about the hoops program and that seeing it improve isn't a real priority for them.

This is a false statement. They've spent a ton of money renovating the arena twice in the past 21 years. There is nothing wrong with the arena or the facilities.

You appear to believe they can control the outcomes of games and recruiting. Every college spends money on athletics and more colleges spend big money on basketball compared to football.

In the past few years, Clemson has been a little better or even in basketball compared to other major universities in our region to include G Tech, UGA, SC, Wake, NCSU and former Big East programs Pitt, Syracuse, and BC. Clemson has won 3 out of 5 against UNC. Our coach has gotten the team to 2 out of the last 4 tournaments. He was able to convince PJ Hall to come to Clemson and get transfers like Reed and Thomas.

Shocking that you believe Clemson does not “deserve” - Basic leadership and decency in our coaches. I will differ with your opinion.

You wrote:

Should not those simply be the base level expectations? So you think we “don’t deserve” those basic things from a coach? Why would we not deserve this? Please explain to all the Clemson Alumni and fans why we don’t deserve this.

Yes we deserve that and expect it. But also , we should also expect growth, competitive teams, and improvement in winning.

Good post. I am on the long list of Clemson Tiger alum and fans who are unapologetically ready for a new hoops HC. Tommy Bowden had a 62.5 win percentage at Clemson over 9.5 years which showed a big improvement over Tommy West's 52.5 winning percentage. Clemson Football was in the dumpster when Bowden arrived. And Bowden's improvement was not enough. Unproven CDS took over, and the rest is history.

BB has been given 12+ years. As the reporters state, Clemson knows BB and BB knows Clemson. Program mold, mildew and atrophy abounds. It's time for a fresh start with a new coach and renewed alum/fan interest. No hard feelings. Millionaire bank accounts and handshakes all around.

Just the truth and TO knows it (as well as some other points made by folks 'round here that know he's local).

IMO I think BB is going to get one more year with an experienced roster -- Like it or not, less PJ Hall transfers, BB most likely gets one more year to drive the ship.

Now, would it be surprising to see big moves made? Idk -- depends on what kind of splash the new AD wants to make.

I'd support it either way if they went a new route or not but my gut just thinks BB gets another year unless they know for sure they've got someone they can bring in that's going to be a clear upgrade

This is your stock response when somebody accurately points out the ACC basketball schedule is tougher than the ACC football schedule.

Surely you understand the natural advantage Clemson has in football with the good football recruiting location, warmer climate, and massive stadium relative to most other colleges. Clemson doesn't have any natural advantage in basketball recruiting.

I think one of the best comments was, "Clemson knows what they have in Brownell and Brownell knows what he has at Clemson."

I guess the question is, are we content with sporadically making the tournament and not being competitive for the ACC championship? It seems, based on the waning interest, most of us are not.

So true. Also, it's been 12 years. Borzello and especially Goodman know how the business is run. A shrinking buyout even after the sweet sixteen run is not a good sign. Goodman said he asked DRad point-blank after the sweet sixteen, and DRad was hesitant. I remember when he tweeted that after that experience.

It all comes down is to do it when the timing was right. If Neff wants to wait a year seems to be the question or not.
But, yes the energy in the program seems to be on life support.
