Not to be a Debbie Downer here

Mar 22, 2021, 10:27 AM

but for some reason that story about the Texas Roadhouse guy has me all whacked out.

I dated a girl and while dating her, her dad committed suicide. It was insanity, dude hung himself at their lake house.

My mom actually tried to as well, but luckily didn't succeed. They found her in the hotel room fast enough, but then cancer got her shortly after.

I just cannot understand what drives a person to be able to do that to themselves. Not that I have some weird fixation on it, but I just cannot wrap my mind around the whole idea and knowing the finality of it all.

I dont know, just got me all weirded out.

I like to tell myself that I would never be suicidal

But that is coming from an extremely happy, only minor inconvenience point of view. I think that unless you are in that persons shoes, you'll never be able to truly comprehend the darkness that person is going through.

Please forgive me, @IneligibleUser

you probably know the story about the girls dad

Mar 22, 2021, 10:35 AM

he was one of the guys involved in that Rocky Mount Funeral Home that was actually a brothel upstairs. They were grooming young black girls and sex trafficking them out of the funeral home. It was back in like 2004-5 range.

his buds all started getting caught and going to jail, so he took off for the lake house and never came back.

I'm not sure if you were the one that mentioned this

Mar 22, 2021, 10:47 AM

or the guy that sits next to me at work. He's from Rocky Mount. Jesus...

dude that whole thing was INSANE

Mar 22, 2021, 10:56 AM

so I am dating her and all this is going and NO ONE had any idea. I mean I was at their house nearly every weekend with her, they had a mansion of a house, pool, video game room. I thought I had hit the lottery with her. Nopeity nope nope nope

I stuck around for a while, about a year, but it just became all too much for me. I couldnt handle all that drama anymore.

not to sound morbid

Mar 22, 2021, 10:37 AM

there's a few instances where I've told my wife I'd off myself. I've seen every single male in my family go down in ways that're off the table for me (all neuro-disorder i.e. Alzheimer's, dimensia, crazy spinal cord issues, etc.). 2 of which were the healthiest most badass dude's I've ever met at their age, and turned into near vegetables.

I told my wife it won't look like a suicide so she and the future fam can get the insurance money.

this story is nothing like that i don't think, but if he was in a place where he felt like he was going out not how he wanted to go, then that's his call to make. still brutal for the family to deal with as he didn't seem to be too old.

yeah, I can see that for sure.

I should re-phrase:

Mar 22, 2021, 10:40 AM [ in reply to not to sound morbid ]

Not every male has gone down, but the ones who have did so in ways that I had to witness first hand and have already told my wife that's a no-go for me.

I saw this this weekend. Mebbe it'll help.

Mar 22, 2021, 10:42 AM

Apparently, there's more to the story, too--he kept in touch with her for years after that initial meeting, and always expected her at conventions and always met up with her. Pretty amazing.

Says a lot that he was a war hero and this was what

Mar 22, 2021, 10:51 AM

he remembers as the greatest thing he’s done.

“During the Normandy invasion, he stormed Juno Beach and took out two snipers before he was struck by six bullets from a machine gun, according to website Today I Found Out. He lost part of a finger, but the silver cigarette case in his pocket stopped a bullet from piercing his heart.“

“Anti-intellectualism has been a constant thread winding its way through our political and cultural life, nurtured by the false notion that democracy means that my ignorance is just as good as your knowledge.” Isaac Asimov
Panta Rhei Heraclitus

TBH I have had times in my life I have thought about it.

Mar 22, 2021, 10:50 AM

Just deep depression and despair, I know I would never actually do it but the thought has came through before.

There was a guy kind of loosely associated with

Mar 22, 2021, 11:08 AM

some of the people we tailgate with who married a ####. She looked like a ####, acted like a ####, by all accounts was a ####....and she did #### things. Drove the guy nuts, supposedly she'd get texts at like 3am and take off into the night. So clearly the solution was to buy her fake teddies. Shockingly, that did not tame the #### in her.

He ended up killing himself on a jogging path, leaving his two daughters with said ####. Last I heard one of them was working at Twin Peaks, they're probably strippers by now.

My BIL took his own life 6 months into the pandemic

Mar 22, 2021, 1:27 PM

If you had told me someone I knew was going to do that - this BIL would have been at the bottom of my list of guesses.

He got "depressed" so fast - that I've wondered if it was brain tumor.

He was a retired police officer who had a circle of friends that met often - like many of us do. I've also wondered if he had undiagnosed PTSD which his circle of friends unknowingly helped him manage...and then when he couldn't see them for months (because of the pandemic), the PTSD got the better of him.

Our family will never be the same...
