Why you cannot fire Spurrier

Sep 1, 2015, 2:02 PM

It's very simple. I asked this question when SCAR hired Holtz. If a legend like Lou Holtz cannot deliver you to the promised land....can anyone? Lou went out disgraced to the point that many snicker that the idea he was once considered a legend.
In come Steve Spurrier. SCAR doubled down by pulling another aging legend into Columbia. Now we are a decade in....and things don't look great. The biggest accomplishment? A division title followed by a crushing defeat in the SEC championship game. The trophy case is just as empty as it was when Holtz was hired over 15 years ago.
So how could they fire Spurrier? Wouldn't that be acknowledgment that two legends in a row have failed to accomplish anything of consequence? Despite SEC money, huge delusional fan base, and every advantage ....they just can't do it.
Firing Slurrier is admitting the suckage.

This is Gamecock football.

Carry on, happy Tiger people, carry on.

I think there is one other variable...

He is about to fire himself!!!

But you make a good point- Who would want to follow these two "legends" down the road to extinction?

Lou delivered us the promised land in the form of 63-17 !***

Buzz....

This needs to be added to the "This is South Carolina Football" dissertation.

TU to you, SIR!!!!

Remember, Lou Corso said that neither Spurrier nor...

anyone else could make USCjr into a championship team. Things were starting to look a little bad for Corso for a while, but ultimately I think he knew what he was talking about!

Corso's quote.....................

"I don't think Spurrier can win the SEC or the national title. I don't care if he coaches here 400 years." LOL!!!!!!

Tanner/Spurrier relationship

Sep 1, 2015, 3:45 PM

I don't keep up with them closely but wonder what the relationship is like between Spurrier and Tanner. Who owns that room when they close the door? Not trying to elicit crude responses, haha.

I don't.

SOS didn't like not getting a contract extension and when public with a statement about having 2 or 3 more years to coach. The results was a one year contract extension which did not prevent the best commits from decooting. He raped his own recruiting class over a one freakin year contract extension setting a precedence for a yearly contract extension until he is terminated or quits.

A good man would have fired him over the damage he did to that one class. SOS is not an incompetent old man with a big mouth, he's a calculating, devious, crafty tactician with a selfish streak longer than his ego.

Tanner and USuCk became his bich and he's turned them out for his retirement money. Now he will haphazardly appear to be coaching while he's making sure that someone else takes the blame for his lackadaisical effort.

I think he hates Columbia and USC. Wouldn't surprise me to see him try to bury that program just for spite.

Re: Why you cannot fire Spurrier

Sep 2, 2015, 6:55 AM

They will fire him after he executes his retirement plan. I'd say two more years and they'll figure out they should have cut their losses already and replaced his ###.

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-10yr.jpgringofhonor-clemsontiger1988-110.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

they won't fire him or have to.

Sep 2, 2015, 6:55 AM

After another bad year both Tanner and Spurrier will mutually agree that's in the best interest of the program that he retires.

Spurrier is ready to retire, and with another bad year it will happen.

Don't think so.

Sep 2, 2015, 6:58 AM

Maybe if they agree to pay his contract out and make that the center of attention. Paying him to quit? Yeah, maybe, as long as he feels like he's won a personal victory.

Re: Don't think so.

Sep 2, 2015, 8:53 AM

Spurrier has an ego that won't allow him to be fired. He is holding on through 2016. USCe's schedule next year has all the tough foes at home and non-conference games are quite easy. The OBC wants to go out as a winner and if USuck can overcome their personnel losses he will claim how he left his program in fine shape for the next coach and staff. Should the chickens end up 4 - 8 in 2015 then Spurrier blames his staff and players and awaits 2016. Unless Gamecock Club membership drastically declines along with season ticket purchases Tanner likely will let OBC go out on his own terms. I doubt the trustees name the field after Spurrier if he ends on a declining note. Many fans wanted Spur out after last season so this campaign is critical to his legacy.

Go Tigers!

If he retires won't he give up that contract money...

Sep 2, 2015, 9:43 AM

he ruined a recruiting class to get?

I just want him to stay till 2017
