Take our beloved Clemson Tigers out of the picture

Aug 11, 2012, 4:32 PM

for a moment. What school do you like to see succeed? Basically if you had to pick a second team, whom would it be? I've always had tons of respect for Alabama, mainly because of history. I always enjoy, even during the Mike Shula era, watching the Tide play.

probably where I wold have gone if I hadn't gotten in to Clemson.

if you mean only a "big" program, it would be Vanderbilt.

Texas A&M, Rutgers and the Academies.

Aug 11, 2012, 4:42 PM

I'm from New Jersey, so I like to see the home-state team do well.

I love the Texas A&M tradition.

And the Academies is somewhat obvious, I think. A team made up of players that have no multi-million dollar NFL contracts in their (immediate) future, who are unquestionably hitting the books and have chosen to serve the country.

NC State. . . grew up a Wolfpack fan!

Aug 11, 2012, 5:07 PM

My Dad went to State on the GI Bill after WWII. I was born in Raleigh, and 'Pack fans really support their school.

When we moved to SC, after completing high school, I still applied to State for college, but was blessed to be able to attend Clemson (which was a bit ironic, as my Dad had applied to both schools [for Textile Chemistry] and ended up going to State!).

In fact, the first game I watched in Death Valley, I was with my parents, pulling for NC State! It was 1967, and the State team was wearing white shoes that season. So Frank Howard, in typical Coach Howard style, had his boys paint their shoes orange! Clemson prevailed that day.

My daughter graduated from App State, and it is an in state (NC) school I feel comfortable pulling for unless they were to play Clemson of course. My nephew started at West Point this summer and will be playing baseball for them, and who can pull against one of the academies unless they are playing each other.

They win without recruiting players who have no business being in any college, unlike much of their competition. Their team has the highest SAT average in the BCS.

Georgia Tech and UNC are almost equal to the Gamecocks for my last place team.

I really like Texas. Great campus, city, Bevo is pretty amazing, and the hook-em-horns thing is cool.

East Carolina in FBS. They are the only football first FBS school in NC, and they have fought tooth and nail against Tabakky Road for years.

I pull for all of the SC FCS teams except PC. I'm Lutheran and a Newberry fan, so it's in my DNA to pull against PC.

Newberry College. Had an uncle play ball there in the 1970's, and growing up we went to a whole bunch of games. Haven't been in a few years, but plan on making a game or two this year.

Aug 12, 2012, 12:00 AM

take Clemson out of the occasion. I hate people that like more than 1 team, I think its ridiculous. I hate people even more that like different teams for different sports. It's always convenient that it's always the good teams for each sport too. You don't ever meet a Duke football fan and a Penn St basketball fan do you? Wonder why! My parents went to different schools, they didn't raise me on Clemson, I raised myself on Clemson. My family has a lot of stronger ties to other schools but I never wavered, don't know why other people do.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

That's a whole lot of hate tigerinlv

Aug 12, 2012, 12:25 AM

Try a little love brother ;)

Clemson is always #1 in our hearts, but other teams have cool traditions, smart kids, or hard working clean guys really trying to better themselves. Most of this discussion reflects that.

I've always liked Michigans fight song. Living in CA like I do now, I like to see Stanford and Cal do well.. can't stand USC but will pull for them to break SEC run if they indeed live up to preseason hype.

Grew up going to a few citadel games each year, and they beat both SCar and Arkansas in the last 20 years so gotta give them a nod too.

I always pull for Vandy. And of course, Furman - when they're not playing us. I grew up close to the Furman campus, and played in their gym as a teen (probably wasn't supposed to), and swam in their lake at night (yep - wasn't supposed to). But Furman should wear PURPLE, and CLEMSON should wear ORANGE.

I have several family members who are graduates. Funny thing is I have seen UT play live against USuC and Clemson as heavy favorites and the Vols lost both games. I was at the UT v USuC game in 1992 when "The Program" was filmed at halftime. I was with my cousin, a UT grad, and some drunk frat boys tried to pick a fight with us because of our UT garb. The idiots have no idea how lucky they were becasue my cousin was an ex-Navy seal and could have plucked one a kid's windpipe out in a half second. I was a state championship wrestler myself and could have broken a leg with little effort. Just goes to show, you NEVER pick fights with strangers in the stands. My cousin just laughed at the idiots and and shrugged them off as "typical South Carolina fans".

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Just playing "what if" .....

Aug 12, 2012, 8:08 AM

...since obviously there is no correct answer beyond Clemson...

I'd have a few choices:

Texas A&M.
Love the traditions, and still the nicest road game folks I've ever met.

Army (and by extension, I guess, Navy): You can't live in this neck of the woods and not develop a deep appreciation for what these guys have meant to our country. (Though if I were an Army fan, I'd have to hate Navy, and vice-versa.)

Wake Forest: Hey, if there were no Clemson, someone else would have to be my favorite ACC team. Should it be FSU? UNC? Maryland? Ugh! My heart would likely go to the underdogs in Switzerland, and in honesty they remain my No. 2 team in the ACC.

Of course, after Clemson, everyone is truly No. 2.
