Quick note about recruiting.

Aug 3, 2021, 1:25 PM

Confession: I don't follow it nearly as closely as I used to. So, I'm no expert.

But, it is impressive the way Norvell is recruiting at FSU. We aren't near the Clemson/Bama/Buckeye level. But, we are WAAAAAYYYY better than we have been in the past several seasons. Everyone knows that for at least the last two years our OL has been absolutely the worst in FBS (not just Power Five, but 123rd out of 123 - ore whatever the number of teams in FBS is). Norvell just picked up a committment from a 4 star OL out of Texas, a guy named Early. (So, let the Early committment jokes begin.) He is the 6th OL committed in the 22 class. Most folks are saying it is easily the best OL class in FSU history (including the Bowden years when we were consistently in the to 5 in recruiting).

Latest ranking I saw had FSU about 8th in the country right now. Like I say, not at the Clemson, but at least headed in that direction.

Now, winning National Signing Day is fine. But, it doesn't always translate into winning on Saturdays in October.

Time will tell, but it at least looks like we could be heading back to respectability at least.

Clemson and FSU will need that talent for sure when we move to the SEC ??

I kid ..I kid…

Bret - FSU will drop some in the rankings as other schools pick up commits…
Based on FSUs per commit average …
That said - I agree with you - pretty good class..
But I’ll be honest - IMO getting talent has never been the issue at FSU …
We’ll see what Norvell does with it…

If Norvell can find a fresh way each season

To dodge Clemson, then you should expect good things

FS always has more talent than most teams due to all the talent in Florida. They also have a strong fan base and winning history.
The deal is that since 2014 they have rarely had a complete team, too many missing parts -- lots of talent but not a team.
Fisher finally let the inmates (many were actual inmates) take over the team. Since then no coach has been strong enough to take back the team from the convicts.

I hope they never win another game.

Taggart's recruiting (outside of QB) wasn't the problem

Having a top 5 player in the country grow up a fan of your team and being pretty unwavering in his commitment doesn't strike me as repeatable. McCall also seems like a guy that is a tweener safety/corner type so your top end talent is clustered in the defensive backfield which was Willie's problem as well.

Early is a nice pickup and credit to the staff for throwing bodies at the issue but no real studs in there like Lucas a few years back.

The #8 ranking is pretty inflated just due to class size and you now have 5 of 18 recruits with a composite ranking above 90 which equates to a low 4 star. If you look at Taggart's classes he pretty much did similar things minus signing a QB but jury still very much out on Purdy and Duffy.

I think there's reason to be encouraged but there's also still a whole lot of room for improvement.

I can appreciate some well-reasoned discussion about one of our rivals. Thanks for bringing this to the board. I hope everyone can keep this civil. My thoughts:

Due to the location, I believe almost any coach can fall into a top 10 to top 15 class at FSU. I believe the same for Florida, and to some extents Miami. A great recruiting staff at FSU ought to be pushing top 5 classes. I understand Norvell is new, so a top 5 class might be difficult, but he is doing about what any coach at FSU should be expected to do.

With that said, I think the class this year will end up pretty good, as it should at FSU. There is some good talent to work with: AJ DUffy, Hunter, McCall.. The most interesting thing about the class, on the whole, is going out-of-state to pick up players that the top in-state schools didn't particularly pursue. For instance, Early out of Texas and Woody out of Alabama.

There is a long way to go before signing day, but I expect Norvell to have FSU back to the baseline classes they have enjoyed. The proof will be in the pudding if he is the coach to get back to the top 5 classes enjoyed under Fischer.
