Tackling issues

Oct 17, 2022, 1:55 PM

I was just watching a video of the 81-yard TD run of the UF QB against LSU on Saturday. Once he hit the LSU 40, he had 3 or 4 guys that could have and should have tackled him, but none did. I saw it in that run and every game, frequently where someone breaks a long run or RAC - the DBs are either trying to strip the ball or just push the runner down or out of bounds. Rarely does it work. I'm no coach, much less a defensive player, but here's what I know - tackle first, go after the ball second. Tackle them on the sidelines > pushing them out (I know you can't always tackle and the push is the best bet, but that's not the majority of the time). It's not just an LSU thing, or any one university. It's everyone on different days. I don't know if it's all the rules in place to protect the offense - not necessarily knocking those - or what. But it's crazy.

Yes. I'm in agreement. One defender guessed the wrong direction the runner was going to cut. One defender tried to strip the ball instead of tackling. One defender arm tackled him but he ran right through it. And a 4th guy looked like he gave up. The defender that tried to strip the bad had the best chance to tackle him.

They are teaching them how to tackle without getting a targeting call, so nobody wraps up at the legs to feet and drives through the tackle like they should.

The problem is the rules around practice. They are only allowed full contact during spring drills for 75 minutes per day. They cannot have full contact on back to back days. They can only have full contact 12 of the 34 days of spring practice.
They can no longer run the paw drill (Oklahoma drill for us old people).
So basically they cannot really practice tackling basics.

Attempt w proper technique or find a seat on the bench and next guy up would wake a lot of people up. In college ball generally db tackling has been awful this year.

A related issue is hitting vs tackling.

I often see defenders hit someone, maybe even a fantastically hard hit, but without any effort made to wrap up the runner. Sometimes the runner manages to maintain or recover balance, and the defender is now out of the play on the ground and the runner can turn the play into a big gain.

I'm not talking about an arm tackle miss where defender might not be able to get their core into the tackle, but full-on failure to tackle despite being in excellent position because the defender chose to "light up" the runner rather than to tackle him.
