Switching from Directv to DISH...pros/cons...any juan?

Sep 28, 2017, 9:31 AM

I had direct tv for a month and cancelled it because every time it rained, it could be a light drizzle or a down pour, the signal would go out. It really was ridiculous. I switched to dish and it was much better. It hardly ever lost signal.

But the best thing is spectrum cable. It's a little more expensive but you get what you pay for. The on demand stuff is great, it never loses signal and has the best internet speeds. I've been with them for a few years now and I think it blows satellite providers out of the water.

Or you could drop both and get Sling or Playstation Vue and save a crap ton of money!

Sep 28, 2017, 9:47 AM [ in reply to Re: Switching from Directv to DISH...pros/cons...any juan? ]

I have yet to find a better alt to cable.

And I've looked at them all. Including all the internet options like sling, and vue. And google, and direct tv live..
.

How you people rely on the net, your modems, and your routers for media is beyond me. I just don't have that kinda faith.

What speed internet and what device (Roku, Firestick, etc) did you use when you tried to stream?

I have charters standard 60 mbs

Sep 28, 2017, 10:20 AM

The only thing I really dislike about charter is needing the dang boxes. Getting hit for $6 per box.

I also stumbled through my attic and cut a bunch of holes in my walls to run cat 5 to every room so I wouldnt rely on wireless.

I ditched 3 cable boxes. Got 1 firestick, roku live or hd, and a roku 4 something. I put them in the kids room. The roku can run charters app so they have an easier b time. Firestick can't so I threw exodus on there to watch the content I'm already paying for.

I also have a new roku tv in my room which I also still have a cable box connected.
I've tried to ween myself off the box but I cant. The box is far easier, quicker, and user friendly.

I pay about 50 for the 60 mbs internet and another 65ish for tv. My bill is around 112 a month. That is for 5 tvs which can run content at the same time...plus the charter app works on all our phones so I can watch TV anywhere.

I have a hdmi cord for my p hone so I can use it if my satellite dish ever forks up at my tailgate.

The only advantage the interent plans have is cost and it just isnt enough.

I can also get att fiber optic internet in my neighborhood but the cost just isn't worth the higher speeds.

Re: I have charters standard 60 mbs

Gotcha. I own my own modem, pay $60/month for Spectrum 100mbps, $35 for Playstation Vue which can stream on 5 devices at once, use 3 Roku 2XD's(only paid for 2 of them one was free with Sling back in the day for prepaying 2 months) for my 3 TV's and then OOMA for my home phone for $5/month. I use the Roku for streaming Netflix, Amazon Prime (which I already had because we shop there so much) and watch ESPN App when our games aren't on TV, which thankfully isn't very often. I admit that getting to the channel you want to watch is slower than cable or satellite but I have gotten so used to it now I don't even really notice it. But it sounds like you have a decently priced TV/internet plan. Mine was close to $200/month when I had the TWC triple bundle.

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I only have the 2 boxes, basic cable , and no dvrs

Sep 28, 2017, 10:50 AM

Plus. . I Call every time they jack my price and threaten to bolt. My bill has only gone up a few times in the last 15 years.

I will note.
I read recently where the cable companies were trying to get a bill passed where they could control the content streamed through their internet.

So charter could limit what you can get through sling or vue. The cellular folks aleady do.

Unfortunately our internet speed & reliability doesn't

Sep 28, 2017, 9:49 AM [ in reply to Re: Switching from Directv to DISH...pros/cons...any juan? ]

afford us that option.

Re: Unfortunately our internet speed & reliability doesn't

Sep 28, 2017, 9:59 AM

If you can switch your internet to either cable or a fiber provider your speed and reliability would be set. Even the increased cost of the upgrade in internet would be offset by the savings of switching to streaming TV. Now if you live in the sticks and can only get DSL and some sort of satellite then you're pretty much stuck.

Sep 28, 2017, 9:53 AM [ in reply to Re: Switching from Directv to DISH...pros/cons...any juan? ]

Agree. I just cut the cable and I love it. I bumped up my Centurylink speed at no cost and subscribed to Sling and Netflix (Sling gave me a free Roku stick). I saved $55 month over Dish plus I now have extreme portability. The service is decoupled from the infrastructure, so I can turn off ESPN after football and college basketball and I can start and stop other services at the slick of a button. It is a brave new world out there!

Had both and dropped both over 4 years ago and went with Amazon FireTv...game changer.

Haven't missed a football, basketball, or Braves game since.

Re: Switching from Directv to DISH...pros/cons...any juan?

Sep 28, 2017, 9:54 AM

Having good tv is one of those modern amenities that I am willing to pay for. I don't have any personal experience with DISH, but have had Directv for over a decade. Yes, it is expensive, but so are a lot of other things that I gladly waste money on. I rarely lose service in bad weather, it has to be really bad to have any effect.

Bottom line is you get what you pay for in most cases. The fact that you can stream Directv data free on all your devices is HUGE. Out at a restaurant with a 2 year old and she starts to melt down? Whip out the iPhone and Mickey Mouse Clubhouse is on in 30 seconds, meltdown avoided.

I feel the same way and have had directv for 15 years

Sep 28, 2017, 10:15 AM

from what I've heard/read DISH has gotten better while Directv has slipped after ATT took over. Personally, we've had no problems with directv but it is hard to ignore a savings of $75-$100/month.

DISH was the reason I cut the cord 4 years ago

Sep 28, 2017, 10:17 AM

The bill went up every month. Customer service not located in America. They could never get it right, so I did without. Have not missed it once.

How long have you been w/ DirecTV? (Long read)

Sep 28, 2017, 10:18 AM

In 2014, AT&T purchased DirecTV for a little under $50 billion and changed the terminology on DirecTV customer levels, that this article was originally based upon. AT&T has however kept the same system as it pertains to offering customers special discounts. After performing some extensive research by talking to several representatives, I have confirmed that this information is in fact still relevant.
•1-12 month customers: You are the lowest on the totem pole. You will not enjoy the various discounts that are offered to your more tenured counterparts, but you can still squeeze out a free subscription to HBO, Cinemax, Starz or Showtime. Those will be defined in the next segment of this article.
•1-2 year customers: You are on the second lowest level of customer standings. DirecTV notices you in the system as being a potential save because your contract will end on the 24th month of service. During the 24th month, you should have a lot of discounts or promotions available in order to keep you as a customer. As previously stated, the information can be found in the next portion of this page.
•2-5 year customers: You are on the third highest level of DirecTV customers. You will have several discounts or promotions available to you, but you still aren't on the elite level. Your discounts include, programming offers, partial or free receiver discounts and free service calls.
•5-10 year customers: You are edging closer to the top, as you are the second highest valued customer. The benefits of this level do not differ much from the highest level. The only difference is that the top level may be eligible for duplicate discounts and offers. Read on to find out more.
•10+ year customers: Congratulations, you have reached the top. There are no more discounts for each additional year after the tenth year. You have several great opportunities to get special offers and equipment for free. Now here comes the secret.

Offers and Promotions that AT&T & DirecTV won't tell you about

The following are all of the Offers and Promotions that DirecTV provides to it's customers.

Pros - just repoint the dish
- all thr ad servers are equally bad
- they all broadcast a haystack of garbage with a few gems thrown in and hype how big there haystacks are.
- same Clemson sports on both
- Dish guide is better

Con. - if you want to pay for all NFL, don't change to dish

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

If you plan to use an RV style dish for tailgating or camping,

Sep 28, 2017, 12:06 PM

...you should consider the Winegard Pathway X2 dish, speaking from experience. It is the only unit that will pick up both the Eastern and Western arc satellites, which is a necessity if one or the other is obstructed (a common problem in a lot of tailgate spots on campus). The Dish/DTV Tailgater units only pick up one of the arcs.
