GITT with your experiences: Family Trip Out West

Sep 25, 2018, 1:09 PM

Who's done it?

How was it?

Drive, fly, or fly and rent a car?

Sights to see?

Were there kids on this trip?

Hotels, camping, or both?

SarahAdidas wants to do an "Adidas family goes out west" summer vacation next summer and I agree that it would be good trip. Our kids will be 8 and 7 at that time.

Back in 2013

Sep 25, 2018, 1:13 PM

The wife, 2 kids, and I borrowed a friend's RV and took a lil trip to Mexico. The ride was nice, scenery decent. We were fortunate that we didn't have to pay for the RV. Anyways, we visited a friend of a friend to pick up a package and bring back into the states. We ran into a few small issues, but overall had a great time.

Do recommend.

but we got hijacked by a couple ex-cons - one was a pervert. We ended up at a bar in Mexico that turned out to be full of vampires.

I haven't, but son and his wife did with 2 other couples.

Sep 25, 2018, 1:16 PM

Flew to Utah, rented 3 small RV's, drove around Utah doing fun stuff, flew home. Seemed like a good plan that worked out well. No kids.

Sep 25, 2018, 1:18 PM

Did Yellowstone 3 years ago with a 13 year old. Flew into salt lake cause of cheaper than drove to Jackson. Rafted snake river, spent 4 nights in Yellowstone. Did horseback riding in West Yellowstone. Great family trip. Takes lots of planning as Yellowstone lodging inside park fills up quickly

Did Yosemite and Sequioa, and Channel Islands last year and was equally as cool. Flew into San Francisco caught a giants game than drove. Flew home from San Diego so we could do the zoo and La Jolla.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Family did it when I was a yunkster.

Sep 25, 2018, 1:21 PM

Flew to San Diego (IIRC) rent a biga$$ van and ride all over the place for a few weeks. Saw a topless lady driving a convertible on a hwy outside of LA, of course 7 yr old me was all, "Dad, look!" He swerved over almost ran into her. Mom laughed at that one for yeeeeeeaaaars!

Do it when chirruns are 10+, they'll have more fun chit to do. A lotta cool stuff we did was really lost on me as 7yr old.

Hotels, some nice, others not so. Cabins somewhere, mighta been Yellowstone.

As a kid, did NOT like all the freekin' drivin. Mind you this was before ipads and such. Ya know what I had...that Coleco hand-held red dot football game. Never played that damm thing again after that trip.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

this sounds horrible

Sep 25, 2018, 1:24 PM

my vacations are so that I get AWAY from the kids....and wife.

Re: GITT with your experiences: Family Trip Out West

Sep 25, 2018, 1:25 PM

Took the kids to Yellowstone 4 years ago. Flew into West Yellowstone. Spent the whole week in the park-2 different hotels. Like someone above said, the hotels fill up fast. Lots of wildlife which was pretty awesome.

Getting ready to fly to San Fran and spend a couple of nights in Yosemite. Probably spend the rest of the week around San Fran showing the kids all the landmarks/tourist stuff.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Took the kids to AZ last summer

Sep 25, 2018, 1:28 PM

Best trip I've taken in a really long time

Flew to Flagstaff from CLT, rented a car

Drove up to Page AZ for two nights. We saw the Glen Canyon ###, Antelope Canyon, and Horseshoe Bend. I went out to Horseshoe Bend at 2 AM to see the Milky Way.

Stayed in Flagstaff 3 nights. We saw the Grand Canyon, The Meteor Crater, Winzlow, and Sedona, daughterof went horseback riding one day.

We VRBO'd it, it was the same price as hotels but nicer b/c not a hotel

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Step 1: Fly to Austin.

Sep 25, 2018, 1:33 PM

Step 2: Rent car.

Step 3: Get cheap hotel room on I-35.

Step 4: Drug kids, lock door, call Wilki.

Step 5: Drink and concert your way across Austin.

Step 6: Pick up kids after a few days of debauchery and fly home.

ringofhonor-rhtig.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

you can avoid a LOT of hassle by not even bringing the kids

Sep 25, 2018, 1:35 PM

If you do driving, stay the hell away from I-10

Sep 25, 2018, 1:43 PM

There is nothing but desolation and dispair along that stretch of road from Louisiana to midway through Southern California. If you want scenery, mosey up to I-70 and eventually you'll see some.

What exactly are you wanting to see out this way?

badge-donor-05yr.jpgmilitary_donation.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Sure, but there's a gas station at least every 175 miles.***

AdventureBus to Yellowstone/Jackson

Sep 25, 2018, 2:00 PM

No kids. Was awesome. They handled the transportation and food. Only slept on the bus 1-2 nights, the rest of time was outside camping (though bus backup for those that don't like the ground).

Fly in/out of SLC
3 days in Yellowstone
Grand Tetons
Kayak around Jackson lake
Hike past Jenny Lake
Raft the Snake River
Fun/drinks in Jackson
Met new folks and general overall fun. 'Roughing it' but letting others take care of most things. Walked 5-10 miles each day. Would highly recommend if you're not into fancy things.

Would like to do the 'Best of the West' tour sometime, but be careful of temperatures. Stops include: Zion, Bryce, Canyonlands, Arches, Moab, etc.

I've not personally experienced the Great Western outdoors

Sep 25, 2018, 2:10 PM

But my half brother, who is married, recently said eff it and went on a 5-6 week solo expedition out west by car. Ended up in northern California.

Pretty funny, he rarely works, but his wife is German and is pretty high up at BMW. She rented him a car, a 7 series Beemer to go. He ended up hitting a deer and majorly effed up the car. That takes some balls for a married man lol

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

For relaxing times, make it Suntory time

7 series are legit

Sep 25, 2018, 4:32 PM

My 2011 5-series was in the garage over New Years. They gave me a 7-series and said I have no mileage limit. Drove that sucker to New Orleans for the Sugar Bowl. Game sucked, but man that car was the shizz. Easily covered the cost of my car repairs with the free rental.

Was nervous leaving it in a parking garage. Could have slept in it for the weekend as it was uber comfy. Highly recommend if you want to drop $110k.

2024 white level memberbadge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

We did it when I was a kid.

Sep 25, 2018, 2:15 PM

2 weeks, all driving, lot of road time, but also a lot of fun and much cheaper than flying six people around.

We stopped in St. Louis on the way out, spent most of our time at various places around the rockies, a couple days at the grand canyon, and then drove back across Texas.

Major attractions were, St. Louis arch and Mississippi river, Pike's peak, rafting the Arkansas River through the Royal Gorge, lots of prisons in Colorado (we just drove by those, didn't stop), Grand Canyon etc.

Do recommend.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

ROH

It's really not that bad a drive.

Sep 25, 2018, 2:24 PM

From where you are, you drive out west to McCormick and back in less than a day.

ringofhonor-rhtig.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Highly recommend Jellystone and Tetons.

Sep 25, 2018, 2:33 PM

Especially Tetons. Mighty purty. Aminals, vistas, lakes and mountings.

Jellystone is great but has more peoples than downtown Tokyo.

Sep 25, 2018, 2:45 PM

Went to Vegas last year with my brother, one of his marine buddies and my dad.

Drank all morning on the plane, went and picked brother up at Twentynine Palms. Made it to Vegas by 8 p.m. Drank and gambled. Went to Denny's and passed out in my pancakes.

Woke up. I been to Vegas before so I was down to just chill at the hotel instead of going to the Strip. Went down the sports book. Watched Clemson vs. Kent State. Got hammers.

Dad and brother and friend return and we all gambled a bit before I started cussing a dealer and was asked to leave.

Somehow, manage to punch by brother in the face in the hotel room because I apparently embarrassed him.

Went to Fremont experience. Ate pizza. Sat by the pool all day and went home the next morning.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Good one is Phoenix to Flagstaff/Grand Canyon

Sep 25, 2018, 3:06 PM

to Hoover ### and Las Vegas. Fly into Phoenix and out of Las Vegas. Rent a car and drive. Day to Grand Canyon and day to Las Vegas. I stayed at the hotel on the south rim that Clark Griswald stayed at in National Lampoons. Was fun. I was about 10yo at the time.
