Sunday sermon: End of a myth

Nov 4, 2012, 8:32 AM

You want to stop ME? Hahahhaaaaaa!

"Their god is a god of the mountains, therefore they were stronger than we. Let us fight against them in the plain, and surely we will be stronger than they."

That was the thinking of the King of Aram against the armies of Israel. It has also bee the thinking of the captains of the ACC.

If we just get Clemson out of the mountains, away from their ceremonial pit of slaughter, we will have them right where we want them.

So ... how'd that work for ya?

GEE-HAW'D has been satiated with a steaming hot bowl of Devil entrails and two straight road wins that were never close. Sure, you can say "Well it was was just Wake. It was just Duke."

They were both ritual disembowelments of teams that needed to be destroyed.

And, in the process, two more myths were busted: First, the Thursday night demon was spanked and sent home crying to the clowns at ESPN. Second, the old weary tale of Clemson finding a way to wither and falter in a game that had no reason to be close is gone.

It's done, dead and flushed down the upgraded bathrooms (and there are actually very nice now!) at Wallace Wade Outdoor Stadium.

You've seen the gaudy, video game numbers, but just in case here's a few that might help even the ardent half-empty type pause and he reflects upon the glass....

In the last two games, on the road, at night, Clemson has scored 98 points ... and it could easily have been more.

Yes those early passing successes by Duke were disconcerting, but in the second halves ... which is traditionally when the old Clemson might let opponents back into the fray ... this year's Tigers have allowed a total of 9 points. None in the fourth quarter.

All in their place.

Sometimes, it's lonely being a road warrior...

Now it is time to come home. In the past couple of weeks, us road warriors have been blessed to see something special unfolding before our eyes. We have witnessed the end of the "same old Clemson."

Now, after testing and refining this team on the road, we return it to you and the loving care of the god of the mountain.

We return the Sons of Clemson to the Valley, to the land of the strong and fair. It's been a joy to see them shake off the old expectations, ripping through opponents with undisguised glee.

Now it's up to you. Take this team and pour your hearts and voices into their support. Make the Valley every bit the rumbling, roaring pit of noise that will make a fifth-string converted linebacker-quarterback crap his pants.

Make the Valley the dizzying hive of #### that absolutely bumfuddles NC State.

And save a special greeting for the end of our three-year exile with the Capons.

Because if our God is indeed a god of the mountains, then it's going to be one heck of a show.

GEE-HAW'D!!
