Sunday morning analysis: "We are who they thought we were"

Sep 23, 2012, 1:13 PM

("they" being the sports media)

We are who they thought we were:
Versatile, explosive offense
Young, inexperienced and questionable defense

And FSU isn't who they thought they were:
Their defense was often confused and showed they can most definitely be scored on and beaten
Their offense looked great and, in retrospect, was the only thing that stopped them (missed FG's, penalties)

I LOVED what I saw in our offense til the mid-3rd quarter when FSU surged. And I LIKED what I saw in our defense - they weren't perfect, but they were able to slow the FSU offense and did ok containing the big play.

What concerns me most from last night's game is how one play and the momentum change that came with it seems to be able to just break the back of the whole team. After their long kick return and subsequent TD, we foundered. Offense started going 3 and out. Defense started giving up the big plays. Penalties started coming on us. Offense (esp Boyd) grew obviously frustrated. Thankfully that happened relatively late in the game or else it would have been the Orange Bowl all over again.

DS and BV have their hands full. This was a coaching loss. Especially the adjustments made, or not made, at halftime. And more than coaching the plays, coaching the mindset of our players.

Thankfully it's only game 4. We have a long season ahead of us and great chances to improve all aspects.

GO TIGERS!

It's kind of like a basketball game where you might not be

The better of the two teams all around but you hit some big shots early, then fail to knock down a few shots in the second half. It's tough to be angry if you believe that FSU is one of the best teams in America. But it's also easy to see how far we have to go on the defensive side of the ball.

A thoughtful post, and I hope you are basically right. However what I saw was them gradually crushing us in the trenches on both sides of the ball. We lack talent and toughness in the trenches and on defense overall. In addition, what I continue to see leads me to suspect major problems with our strength program. And Dabo's either in denial or just doesn't grasp the severity of the problem. I don't see how this can be fixed any time soon.

On thing concerning our S&C program. Dabo and the coaches aren't stupid, but Batson & crew don't report to the football coach. There just may be someone else preventing a change there - higher up?

Yeah, we lost that game the way

I thought we would lose it...simply, the difference between our offense and their defense is not as great as the difference between their offense and our defense.

Good analysis. I've also noticed how one play, going back to the 99 yard fumble return last year, and the entire team simply loses it. I could understand if this were a 12 and under league, but come on, these are all highly rated recruits who should, by this point in their football lives, be able to overcome adversity. It was painful to watch the defense simply give-up last night, that is not Clemson football. Are there no leaders on our defense? Who is the guy that will rise up and take charge of this team? So far it's not Goodman or anyone else. Maybe Blanks as a freshman can emerge as the leader. Boyd even got sketchy again last night as he seemed to forget how to run the offense he had masterfully guided for most of 3 quarters. However, I'm still in their corner and glad that each player and coach are Clemson Tigers. Beat BC; Go Tigers!
