Actually, it's easier to fall for scams like this than you might think. Maybe 10-12 years ago, my ex-wife was trying to reconnect with someone and used one of those "people search" websites. A phone number is only $1.99. So she puts in a credit card number for that one time fee. It didn't help, it was the old LAN line number that she already had and was disconnected. OK, no big deal, 2 bucks, worth a try...

A couple months later I'm trying to figure out what this $29.99 is on the credit card. Come to find out, after a lot of digging, she hadn't noticed a pre-checked box in the fine print that signed up for "unlimited access to the database". Long story even longer, after multiple calls and promises to cancel and a full refund for several months fees... nothing. Finally had to cancel the card to stop the bleeding. Scammed us out of about $200.

FunFact, if you have someone's gmail adress, put it into the google search bar and you will get everything from legal name, which party affiliation, current address, prior addresses, and all kinds of other useful info.
