Subway Sponsorship Got Me Thinking

Aug 27, 2021, 8:45 AM

Back in the early 80s at Clemson, my recollection was Subway sandwiches were actually pretty good with a much better meat to bread ratio than they have now. Am I remembering this wrong, become jaded with other options now or did Subway just go cheap?

I think Subway was always sort of meh.

But there was little to compare to them nationally or even regionally back in the day so one did not realize how meh they my have been. (Hopefully I am not offending any Subway franchise owners too much)

You’re correct. They have gone down the tubes

quality and service wise. They basically sell pre fab food tossed together by a bunch of poorly trained employees. They use the term “fresh” loosely. Fresh out of bags sent in from their distribution center is the truth of it.

It was SubStation II for me back in the 80's. Didn't eat much Subway back then.

Substation II is still pretty good. Subway, no way.

Their sandwiches have become strange these days as they try to disguise the lack of real substance. I just want quality meat, cheese and bread. They are full of shredded lettuce and “toppings”.

We still have Substation II near where I live. Way above Subway.

Yes, we do too and its pretty good, but before they restructured 10-15 years ago and change the colors from red and yellow to red and white it just not quite the same. however still better than Subway!

After you have enjoyed a REAL sub/hoagie/grinder when visiting the NE United States, it's difficult to step down several quality levels and eat a Subway sandwich.

I fondly remember hitching a ride to the Philly area during my 1963-64 sophomore year at Clemson, back when you paid the student driver a cent a mile to ride along, and all in the car bought two subs to enjoy during our overnight return to Clemson...at 50 cents each!

The problem with Subway sandwiches is that, when you unwrap them to eat, they fall short when compared to how they appear in their ads, even when you've asked them to put a little extra this or that on the sub. Also, staff preparation certainly seems inconsistent. The one improvement I'd enjoy seeing is for Subway to start using a REAL oil/vinegar/oregano combination. Makes a BIG difference.
