Style difference between Venables and Goodwin...impact?

I recall reading interviews with Goodwin and players after he was named DC about his style. Everyone talked about his letting the players "play free"; let them use their speed.
Venables was known as a discipline guy....stay in your lane, control the man across from you, be in the right position kind of guy.
Has that been a factor in troubles we have had stopping the screen and in stopping third down conversions? I don't doubt that Goodwin's system will be successful but I am curious if the "playing free" will find our guys out of position too often....particularly when we face a high quality offense. Does he have to dial back his "go play free" approach?

I agree, he belongs up in the booth where he can see what's actually going on on the field, and tell his man on the side lines what to do to correct it!!!

With all due respect, he belongs wherever he thinks he needs to be. It's not unusual. I am also fairly certain that if Dabo disagreed, HE'D make the change in where Coach is during the game. Venables was more fun to watch though.

Venables is high energy. Goodwin is mellow during the game. I am not sure if he gets fired up behind the scenes. That would be interesting to know.

He did say let the, play free in the scheme, so I assume that means not just playing backyard football. In his interviews he mentions playing better with eye discipline.

I was thinking about what Dabo was saying about the defense and couldn't remember him ever going that far when Venables was DC. I could have missed it but it seems Dabo knew that BV was going to rip "new ones" after a bad game. This may have been Dabo's opportunity for development.

Goodwin (and Dabo) needs some time to figure out what works best for him. He is new to this. They will figure it out soon enough. Don't start in on him just yet...

I don't think Goodwin holds the players as accountable as Venables did..........and that's based upon a couple of comments from players as well as those close to the program. I think Dabo's outburst this week may change some of that.

I honestly don’t blame scheme as much as missing Skaski and Spector. Those are the guys that had a plethora of knowledge and played smart. Spector as we have found out is even better than we realized. He’s doing the same things at the NFL level.
So many times Skalski would call out what the offense was doing. Now he would get beat in coverage but knowing the play helped us a lot of the time. I’m hoping a full week of practice and film study will help these guys.
Also it’s only two games. Let’s get a bigger sample size.

where we're more talented but less experienced. They'll learn. Boulware, Spector, Skalski, Goodson all had to learn as well.
I'm betting they learned slot from that film against Furman
