Student question for the old-timers

I didnt grow up a Clemson fan but am a Senior now and one of the biggest supporters...the thing I was wondering is if the old-timers and lifers are upset with the fact that UGA is not such a rival anymore. I always hear about that from the older generations that we hate UGA but as a student, I dont think the current student population has the same distaste for the pups it seems that FSU and GT are much bigger, naturally. I just wanted to know if that is a point of discontent for some of you and are us students really missing out on a great rivalry? Maybe it will spark back up next year with the home and home? (GT doesnt do it for me)
Side note: Don't worry, the student SCar hate is as strong as ever, if not stronger....losing to a group like that constantly will do that to ya, for those who arent aware...my class of 2013 (came in fall '09) have not seen a football win against SCar...keep that scary thought in perspective as we only has one season left as students

so it became big time cause we caught up to them

Back in the '60's when I was there, GaT was still in the SEC. We played UGA, GaT, Alabama, Auburn, Southern Cal while I was there.
A big crowd in that period was 30,000, no upper decks.We won the ACC with records like 6-4 -won all conference games, got beat OOC. We played those teams for Money, like some schools play us now. Basically, we were their cupcakes...
Remember on year at pre-game meal in Atlanta, an alumni told the team if we beat Tech, we would all be his guests at the Atlanta Playboy Club. We didn't come close...
Think that is where the "hate" for the GA teams came from, years of frustration.
One of the years we played Alabama they were #1. We had an all-american tackle who told me after the game he saw 5 different defensive tackles during the game and only difference in them were their jersey #. We lost 35-0.

Me too! I am a Georgia fan once a year. Those games were epic. They were 60 minutes of giving 110% by both teams. Some of the best football I have ever seen.

The series between Clemson and Georgia between 1979 and 1990 was probably some of the best football in the nation. The games were very close and usually only separated by a last minute field goal. The record during that period was 5-5-1 it was some of the best football I have ever seen. We flew back from Kansas to see the 1987 Clemson/Georgia game and it was worth every penny. Don't know if will be like that again but it was fun. I would have to say that FSU has replaced them but as an older fan I am not disappointed but I sure enjoyed the Georgia series.

it's a real shame that the two schools don't play every year any more. I don't think a 2-year renewal will "bring it back", it would take a run of 4-6 years to do that.

rivalries in college football. Three out of 4 years from 78-81 it had a major impact on the national championship.
In '78 we were 11-1 and our only loss was to UGa.
In '80 they won and won the SEC & NC.
In '81 we won and won the ACC & NC. (UGa. won the SEC)
Starting with Pell in '77 the rivalry got very competitive. They owned us before that, but '77 thru '95 we played them 15 times and most of the games were very close, often won or lost on late field goals. A few games had FG's kicked as time on the clock expired.
The games in the 80s were also incredibly emotional and exciting because not only were they close and often decided by a FG, but Clemson & Georgia had arguably the best kickers in the country dueling it out with kicks over 50 yards. Both teams had great running games and great defenses. This was true smash mouth football where TOP and field position were critical. Special teams were huge in these games. Punting & kicking were actually exciting in these games. Dooley and Ford both knew any opportunity to get points had to be seized upon, which led to MANY FG attempts not just over 50 yards, but 60+ yards. Normally people hate seeing a game end on a FG, but it was something special seeing these amazing games and great kickers dueling it out.
With less than 2 minutes to play Butler won the '84 game with a 60 yarder after we kicked a 48 yarder to tie the game @ 23.
In what is arguably one of the craziest endings to any college football game ever played, the '83 game ended in a 13-13 tie. How it ended, however, was a once in a lifetime spectacle. With time running out Ford had Iggy try a 68 yarder. He missed and with only a few seconds left on the clock, the refs re-spotted the ball and UGa had Butler try a 66 yarder in the opposite direction.

Now make them a national power about 40 years before they ever heard about Bobby Bowden.
Now put Clemson in games against them every year, with unfortunately predictable results most of the time.
Now, and this is an important step ... reduce the average Seminole fan's football acumen, IQ and social bearing about 35 percent.
You now have basic idea what it was like to play JawJaw regularly back then. Which is why it became such a potent, powerful clash in the late 70s and 80s when we finally caught up to them.
And why it's such a shame we don't still meet.

but it was onesided when I was in school till the late 70's - 80's. GT came to DV once and lost. They would not schedule us home and home and dropped the series. Then a few years later they joined the ACC and had to play us home and home. For them it was an exercise in futility

to anyone else in the regular season. It's a strange statistic and I don't have the time to look up all the details but I'm sure someone probably knows the exact stat by heart.
I did find this little nugget- Clemson’s only regular-season losses in 1978, 1982 and 1991 were to the Dogs, and Georgia’s only regular-season loss during that great three-year Herschel Walker run was in Death Valley to the eventual 1981 national champion Tigers.

Most of that comes from the late '70's and early '80's when both schools were very good and the games were very close. Add the proximity of the schools and the similarity (both land grant and rather rural) and it was a good match.
I considered them a bigger rival than USuC but I also didn't grow up or live near Columbia (at the time) so honestly didn't hate USuC as much.

was Dooley. Like others have stated in the late 70's & 80's we competed evenly against uga. We recruited the same players (and had good success). Dooley decided to drop Clemson for a softer opponent and to give them an edge in the recruiting battles.
Coot fans (except those with short term memory loss) should know that uga owns your ####.

I'll 'second' this post, I remember when Dooley openly admitted dropping Clemson for a softer opponent.
I almost never "pull" for the Dawgs to win, but I do hope they beat the chickens each year.
I want UGA to go 1-11 each year, and chickens to go 0-12.

exposure as the recent SouthernCal - Texas battles of a few years ago if ESPN had been around back then.
1980 - UGA narrowly defeated Clemson on their way to the National Championship
1981 - Clemson beat Georgia on the their way to the National Championship (Georgia's only loss before their bowl)
1982 - Georgia handed Clemson their only loss on their way to playing for the National Championship
1983 - They played to an epic tie in Clemson - basically eliminating each other from National Championship contention
2 teams 60 miles from each other that were in the National Championship hunt several years in row? Each game had 100,000 people on campus when their were only 80,000 tickets to be had.

Can't get any tighter than that, and this was with Clemson and Georgia both at their peak.
Our only loss in '78 & '82 was to Georgia.
Only 2 of those games were decided by more then 7 points.
Our average margin of victory was +4, their average margin of victory was +6.4
Their point total was 171 or 15.55/game
Our point total was 159 or 14.46/game

1985 Georgia 20 - Clemson 13 L -7
