Strong is a great guy but poor coach

Oct 25, 2014, 2:50 PM

You cant tell me Texas doesn't have the talent now to win ball games. No way they should be .500 or less this year. I hope he can figure it out, but its looking like a bad hire for UT.

WRONG.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Strong is a great guy but poor coach

Oct 25, 2014, 2:52 PM

Charlie Strong is doing a phenominal job at UT.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

So Kstate has better talent? LOL Right...

Oct 25, 2014, 2:54 PM [ in reply to Re: Strong is a great guy but poor coach ]

Texas gets whoever they want, Kstate relies on walk ons and jucos. No way Kstate is a 23-0 better football team than Texas.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

He's changing the identity at Texas

Oct 25, 2014, 2:57 PM

You expected him to dominate in year one?

Also the idea that Texas gets whoever they want is false. There are large portions of the state that are anti-UT. It's a matter of choosing the correct talent, which Mack Brown failed at late in his career

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Dominate? No... Get Dominated? No but they are...

Plus a lot of the talent has been going to Texas A&M in resent memory

Changing it from the elite team in the Big 12

Oct 25, 2014, 4:05 PM

To basically getting shut out by both Baylor and K. State.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

They HAD the talent

Oct 25, 2014, 2:53 PM

But he kicked half of it off the team

2024 white level memberbadge-donor-10yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Yeah but their 2nd and 3rd team could start on most

other football teams.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Yeah but their 2nd and 3rd team could start on most

Oct 25, 2014, 3:02 PM

A) You think we have OL problems? Texas has huge OL problems. Dismissals and injuries have decimated their OL.
B) Mack left the program in bad shape. (Bad Kids, Bad Attitude, No Work Ethic)
C) Swoops couldn't hit water if he fell out of a boat at QB when Strong and Watson hit campus. He isn't great, yet, but has massively improved from last year.
D) Strong cleaned up the program and has kicked 9 players at last count off the team, many of them starters. That was before the injuries that they've been hit with.
E) They play a really tough schedule. All of their losses are to ranked teams (UCLA, Baylor, Oklahoma) outside of BYU, who were ranked before losing their QB. Today, #11 Kansas State. They still have to play #22 WV, #10 TCU and Oklahoma State.

Texas is on the rise, not the decline. It could be as soon as next season.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Iowa State should have beat them

Oct 25, 2014, 3:06 PM

Only convincing wins are N Texas and Kansas. Texas is better than that.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Iowa State should have beat them

Oct 25, 2014, 3:09 PM

I live in Austin and I'm telling you that this guy is doing good things. I saw what Mack did to their program and Strong is exactly what they need. He is tough, disciplined and a heck of a Football Coach. You see a huge difference with them this year compared to last. They aren't winning yet, but they are tough and they play hard every game.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

You live in Austin?

Oct 25, 2014, 3:13 PM

I live in SA but spend half my time in Austin, where my gf lives. She goes to UT. I've somewhat adopted the Horns as my 2nd team

Re: Iowa State should have beat them

Oct 25, 2014, 5:39 PM [ in reply to Re: Iowa State should have beat them ]

I think Charlie Strong will bring Texas back! He is a great coach and an even better man! Makes me think about pulling for them again, since we never play them.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

You're missing the biggest issue

Oct 25, 2014, 3:25 PM [ in reply to Re: Yeah but their 2nd and 3rd team could start on most ]

A&M has wrapped up the best talent in Texas the last 3 years, and are crushing the state in recruiting once again. Kids that always went to Texas are now going to A&M. Heck, some of them are going to Baylor.

Texas Recruiting Rankings per ESPN since 2010

Oct 25, 2014, 3:12 PM

2010: #2
2011: #5
2012: #3
2013: #16
2014: #16

The talent is there...

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Texas Recruiting Rankings per ESPN since 2010

Oct 25, 2014, 3:22 PM

You really haven't been following this story at all. Please compare those ranking lists to who is still actually on the team. Their backup quarterback is a walk-on who had zero d-1 offers and was just a student. They literally called him up after the season had already begun and offered him a spot on the team based on him basically being the only other eligible person on their campus with any experience at quarterback.

Jstone D329 - “ It’s ok to want a coaching change”
Brownell @Clemson: 8 seasons ranked 50th or worse by Sports Reference’s SRS
1-29: Brad Brownell road record against ranked ACC opponents
142, 161, 294, 307, 293, 166, 225, 180, 260, 164, 141, 72, 68 - assist rankings amongst all D1 programs during Brownell's tenure

OP is definitely clueless here...

Oct 25, 2014, 3:30 PM

Anyone who expected this to be a quick turnaround at Texas hasn't been paying attention.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

So they are 23-0 to K State bad?

Oct 25, 2014, 3:31 PM

Not buying it

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: So they are 23-0 to K State bad?

Oct 25, 2014, 3:36 PM

K State is ranked #11 and has only one loss on the season to a top 5 team in overtime. Texas is starting the equivalent of Winston's backup as their 1st string QB and has no legitimate backup and a terrible offensive line. I don't really understand your point. Regardless of what you think about their reputation, budget, or prior recruiting, they simply don't have an offense that can move the ball forward against a reasonable opponent. If you can't move the ball you don't score points. If you don't score points you don't win. Charlie Strong can't magically turn 3rd stringers into champs after less than a year on campus.

Texas also didn't even have a single player drafted

Oct 25, 2014, 3:46 PM

last season, so the talent wasn't even there any more. Mack Brown and his staff weren't coaching up the players at Texas, and it had almost turned into a country club type of atmosphere. They were getting good high school talent for a while, but Strong came into a situation where he had a bunch of undeveloped, lazy football players with terrible habits both on and off the field. A lot of the older players were lost causes and they really needed to have a lot of roster turn-over before they could be successful again.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

This is fun

Oct 25, 2014, 3:40 PM [ in reply to Re: Texas Recruiting Rankings per ESPN since 2010 ]

QB: Swoopes: 4*
RB: Brown 5*, Gray 5*
WR: Harris 4*, Johnson 3*, Shipley 4*
TE: Swaim 3*, McFarland 4*
T: Hutchins 3*, James 4*
OG: Flowers 4*, Perkins 4*
C: Doyle 3*

DE: Hughes 3*, Reed 4*
DT: Brown 5*, 4*
LB: Jinkins 4*, Hicks 5*, 4*
CB: Diggs, 4*, Thomas 4*
S: Colbert 3*, 4*

So, I wouldn't cry about Texas lacking talent. Maybe Charlie Strong just lacks talent?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: This is fun

Oct 25, 2014, 3:56 PM

Of course it looks like that. Frankly I'm surprised that there are the many 3*s on there. Texas used to offer the same bump to 4*s that most SEC schools offer. Doesn't change the fact that dismissals have affected depth and competition. Plus the right side of their line has one year of college experience combined.

I like how we can make excuse for Texas's line

Oct 25, 2014, 4:00 PM

and demand that ours be better when we have our RG playing tackle, a career backup playing RG, and our back up center playing.

Also, Gray and Brown were both ranked higher than any Clemson RB... ever, and Texas just got shut out.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: I like how we can make excuse for Texas's line

Oct 25, 2014, 4:39 PM

Don't confuse my commentary with the masses. I think you're making my point for me. Most people just knee jerk expect things to be a certain way. They pull for Clemson so everything dang well better be great no matter what facts get in the way. Texas - biggest budget in college sports, so you better win regardless of any other circumstances or you're a terrible coach.

And, I think you might be prone to a little hyperbole in regards to their running backs. CJ Spiller and Jamie Harper were the number 1 rated RBs in their class.

Jamie was listed as a FB and a 4* player

Oct 25, 2014, 4:46 PM

You're right about CJ though, he was ranked 8th nationally (overall

Brown was 10th and Gray was 5th nationally (overall). So CJ was ranked 2 spots higher than Brown.

Still, that's a good bit of talent in the back field for a shut out.

ONE taken in the draft last year. He's going to need a couple of years because that program was in shambles by UT standards.

Please see the post above this one

Oct 25, 2014, 3:47 PM

In 3 more years there team won't be any more "talented" than it is right now.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

You're discounting the fact that Mack Brown ruined a lot

Oct 25, 2014, 3:52 PM

of those guys by allowing them to get away with anything they wanted and not coaching them up. Texas didn't have a single player drafted last season despite the good recruiting rankings. It's obvious that the players who went to Texas were not being developed at all under Brown.

Strong inherited a lazy, undisciplined, and in some cases uncoachable bunch with bad practice habits. The whole culture at Texas needs to change, and it will take a few recruiting classes to get a group that buys into Strong's vision.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Strong is a great guy but poor coach

Oct 25, 2014, 4:01 PM

I think Charlie is building the program the right way. He dismissed much of his talent due to their lack of character. He inherited a train wreck.

Yes, I live in Austin. I've done the same with UT. You should come watch Clemson games at the Clemson bar with us. Tons of ppl went to the game today for Homecoming, so prob won't have a large group today, but tons of Tigers in Austin. We get a good group together every week. We prob had 40-50 ppl or more for the UGA and FSU games. We watch at Midway on Riverside.
