I hate this time of the year
May 25, 2021, 7:37 AM
|

We have to tell these kids how proud we are that they just finished the easiest part of their life.
Congrats on graduating! Even though you should have failed, but your mom called the superintendent and demanded your teachers allow you one week to make up everything from the last semester so your 30 would magically turn into a 60.
Congrats on completing the easiest stage of your life. Some mountain you climbed. I'm sure it was difficult being such a #### rocket that your teachers made sure you passed so they didn't have to deal with you for another year.

Stress level is often determined by one’s level of experience.

For many of students, school has been the most stressful time of their life. I’d imagine that some in here, may look at things you post, and with all of their life experience think, “congratulations on completing the easiest stage of your life.” But for you, it’s been the most stressful experience you’ve faced to date. But I’m just drunk again so I could be wrong.

My post doesn't include the honors kids
May 25, 2021, 7:46 AM

or the kids with IEPs who struggle every day.
My post is directed to the large swaft of kids who do nothing all semester then get mama to throw a fit to admin who then caves and allows these kids to make up a ton of work in one week so they can pass.

These parents who put pressure on their kids to be perfect

are crushing them IMO. But everyone, kids or grown, invents crap to stress over. I remember high school. The pressure of tests, grades, sports, and all the social stuff that was ABSOLUTELY the most important part, was actually in retrospect, one big party. Luckily I was serious when needed, and goofed off when needed.
If I could rewind to my early childhood and have a do-over, I wouldn't change a single thing. Except that one wreck in high school after 14 beers. I'd redo that night. Otherwise, I could not have been blessed with a better time.

as a future parent - what is the consensus these days?
May 25, 2021, 9:04 AM

when I grew up, my parents mandated a 4.0. anything less received punishment. Everything else was extremely lax as long as I kept a 4.0 and didn't get in trouble.
I like to think that it ingrained in me to do the least amount of work possible to not get in trouble.

serious question
May 25, 2021, 9:07 AM
|
|
can you get into clemson or sakerlina w/ As and Bs?
UGA is dayum near impossible to get in. and zero chance you get into GT w/ any Bs. As and Bs kids went to GA State or Southern if they stayed in state, but likely they went to Auburn, sakerlina, bama, ole miss, Tennessee, etc.

Depends on your high school I think

Generally, top 10% of your class, good extracurricular participation, and a very good SAT score gets you into Clemson. But I can't really comment because I went to a private school. So it was skewed really for us. I got into Clemson with an 1100 on the SAT and mostly A's and B's. But then again I was average in my class. Nowhere near top 10%. Solid 50th percentile, maybe 40 tops. But then again every single student went to college. Sewanee, Washington and Lee, Duke, Princeton, Harvard, Yale, MIT, that's where the top 10% went in my high school class. Clemson had the most students overall though.
So it's all relative.
And none of that translates into success as an adult fwiw.

especially for state schools. my family's stance was that they weren't helping w/ college. so either I went in-state (free until I lost the Hope), or had to figure out a way to go out of state fo free.
I'm a big proponent of state schools, and staying in state. I might be biased b/c I think the GA state schools are very good and they take care of GA residents (at least they did 15 years ago). In order to do that you gotta get in though.

over a 4.0 (The scales are weird these days) with high SAT/ACT scores and extra-curriculars. It also depends on which program you apply to. Legacy stuff doesn't really matter anymore either.
My niece is going to apply to Clemson soon, but her Mom and Dad went to SCar so they are not particularly pushing Clemson. I am interested in how getting accepted into Clemson goes for her. Her SAT scores are not GREAT, but her GPA and AP classes is high and she goes to a good high school.

both biological and professional.
Especially if you have life scholarship. Go to tech for 2 years then transfer to the 4 year college.
I would have saved so much money if I would have done that

my niece got a 1540 on her SAT, but is only like 15 in her class despite taking nothing all AP classes. For her senior year she wanted to take a fun elective and her guidance counselor advised against it because it would "lower" her GPA by not having an honors or AP weight.

Seniors are actually finished and can graduate because lots of them need multiple people checking behind them at all times to make sure they did the actual work. Kids seem kinda lazy. I probably was too.

the family while going to school remotely which is certainly tough on the kids. The families depend on that extra cash and got used to it. The kids cannot stop working now so it is a struggle for them. I would say they are not lazy.

Our district has some REALLY po families, so they are certainly dependent on that cash to keep the lights on sometimes. Also, some of them are illegal so I am not sure how they can get the gov't assistance like stimmy checks.

Pretty cynical viewpoint for a high school teacher to disparage high school graduates. I'd be careful about putting down their accomplishments, to many people an online masters in education isn't exactly summiting Mt. Everest either.
