I keep seeing "Joe Burrow" and "Justin Fields" as supposed evidence

Dec 10, 2022, 4:40 PM

the portal is some sort of magic program changer.

In the history of transfers, what other players have had that type of impact? I can't think of any.

The fact is, if we didn't have a 5-star QB with another coming, then we may consider looking for an elite QB in the portal.

Tons of those guys out there, right? LOL.

Neither Burrow nor Fields were portal players, but either way, guys like this are EXTREMELY RARE. Citing these two dudes as some sort of evidence the portal can make teams elite is wildly flawed.

Nobody has gotten elite due to the portal. Nobody has become great with portal kids, and portal kids haven't helped anyone to reach the playoffs. Teams like LSU and USC have basically built their teams with portal players. Because they had to in order to field a team.

In most all cases, portal kids are leaving their current program so they can start elsewhere. When you bring one in, it's based on promising starting roles. Nobody wants to leave a situation where they're not getting enough playing time in order to move somewhere else to again be a backup player.

As far as I can see, we don't need any starters. I can't even imagine telling someone we recruited into our developmental program that we're bringing in a player to take their spot away.

Dabo has said repeatedly - if we have an absolute need, then we'll go to the portal.

But bottom line, again, the portal is not making good teams great. There is nothing magic about kids leaving one program to start at another.

I wish people would stop acting like, "we gotta adapt!" because we haven't taken any portal kids to date, even though we did try to recruit at least one last year. Again, if we have an absolute need and we're looking for a guy to come in and start, then we'll hit the portal. We're recruiting a couple right now in fact.

Please stop the gnashing of teeth over the portal. It's not going to move our needle.

There’s one in NY tonight that could win the Heisman

Dec 10, 2022, 4:44 PM

Another one just ended our home winning streak. Quit following a blind shepherd. The portal “could” be a game changer.

I disagree that Rattler ended our home winning streak. We beat ourselves with a little help from poor officials.

Exactly. 27.6% and a fumbled punt are why we lost.***

If by "beat ourselves" you mean allowing Spencer Rattler to go for 390, then Clemson beat themselves.

11 games with DJ Uiagalelei.

Love him as a Tiger, but he was dead weight. And yeah, with a serviceable QB, we beat you in your national championship season last year

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Lol. As if UGA would win

Dec 10, 2022, 11:48 PM

I gave you TU for a pretty accurate post. With DJ we beat SC 30-0. I don’t think DJ is dead weight. Try to imagine all of the hype DJ had to live up to from all of the sports media, fans, and Coaches from other teams talking about how he was basically the favorite for the Heisman.

He did not drop passes or was not responsible for the RB’s or other players who fumbled the ball.

You had a team that lost probably the best QB to ever play at Clemson, Travis ETN who showed us more talent than White lid who choose UGA over Clemson. It tool last years team to build confidence. Even though adversity they were successful. I do agree that last years team did not have the chemistry of our 5 CFP teams. But we still have double digit win seasons that we should be proud of.

Most of the years from 2015 to 2019 we would have owned UGA. It took Kirby Smart longer than Dabo to pass Bama In the polls.

Re: Lol. As if UGA would win

Dec 11, 2022, 7:16 AM

We won 30-0 bc last year we recognized the fact DJ WAS dead weight and ran the heck out of the ball to close the year, not “trusting” him w plays that he could turn into points for the opposition. For some reason, this year, we ignored it when it was clear he could not be trusted, but did so anyway (with the big difference being THIS year we had THE alternative buried on the sideline). Portal will finally be of benefit to us by freeing us of DJ. Hope he wins Heisman elsewhere, but it was clear it was not happening here and we likely threw away USC and home win streaks and playoff berth stupidly allowing him to continue as QB after Syracuse

I doubt Rattler throws on us like that with Cade at QB. Our defense vs UNC was like here we go again with DJ at QB. Once Cade came in and scored, it lit a fire under the defense. It’s complementary football.

Turnovers and poor qb play lost the game to the coots.

Re: There’s one in NY tonight that could win the Heisman

Dec 10, 2022, 11:19 PM [ in reply to Re: There’s one in NY tonight that could win the Heisman ]

We did get beat on 2 long plays that helped Rattler’s stats look better. But he also threw his game average 2 interceptions. We fumbled giving SC a short field twice. But the reason Rattler was able to throw so much is there were clearly holding and a few actual tackles of Clemson D players by SC offensive players.

I don’t know who is worse about calling holding calls, SEC or ACC officials. It’s almost like someone higher up has on field officials don’t call holding unless it is just so obvious. It was obvious. And with all ot that said SC only won by 1 point. If Dabo had kicked a FG on 5 and short in first half and we don’t fumble the ball and take a way pick 6 it’s a blowout.

Let the SC have their year of bragging but we have kicked their butts in blow outs in several games over the last 20 years. I was at the game where we beat SC 45-0 in 89’ and last year we won 30-0. We played sluggish all day. I believe we win of it was a night game. But SC won I can live with a loss to the coots every 8 years.

Enjoy your time in the spotlight Ga. Your day is coming when you will be on the outside looking while we went to 5 straight CFP’s winning twice.

Our defense held a better QB in check playing NC another conference NC.

I would say much when a Ga team let Bama come back on a last second pass in the CFP’s.

You don’t win a rivalry game if you can’t move the ball the entire second half. We lost because we kept an ineffective QB in the entire half.

Dec 10, 2022, 4:59 PM [ in reply to There’s one in NY tonight that could win the Heisman ]

Ok, and? USC has stacked their program with portal kids. Riley is a good coach, but where is USC? Did their slew of transfer become game changers? No. They ranked slightly above us, only because we struggled QB.

I'm simply not buying these one-offs as evidence the portal is transforming good onto great of great into elite.

Again, these are kids who are leaving their programs to take a starting role somewhere else.

The portal is not a "game changer". Occasionally a kid may transfer and make a difference, like Burrow and Fields (didn't win a championship), but the examples are few and far between.

Dec 10, 2022, 11:30 PM

Yea, they did mention Riley is a good coach, but he had no choice but to hit the portal. Same with Kelly at LSU. Those two basically rebuilt their rosters with portal players. They had to.

I hope we're never in that position.

Exactly what would your picture show?

Dec 10, 2022, 5:07 PM

Since the portal opened, how many of these guys are you talking about? Two? QBs arr obviously in a different bucket, and nabbing an elite QB in the portal could obviously be a "game changer", but again, we don't need an elite QB.

And, how many thousands of kids have gone through the portal?

Sample size, CM, sample size

If we have an absolute need for a starter, then we'll hit the portal. I think we're actively looking for a position or two, but if we don't sign any we will not get "left behind" or some silly notion like that.

And there's been at least five those already (Burrow, Fields, C. Williams, Hurts and Kyler Murray) in the past five seasons, so that's actually quite a lot. If you go back a little further you can add Baker Mayfield in there.

And if you broaden your search a little you will find many high-level transfers.

-In addition to Caleb Williams, USC got Jordan Addison, one of the best WRs in CFB, from Pitt and their #1 RB was at Oregon last year

-Kenneth Walker was the best RB in the country last year at Michigan State after transferring in from Wake Forest

-Bama had Jahmyr Gibbs this year and Jameson Williams last year as their #1 RB and WR, respectively

-Arik Gilbert and Derion Kendrick were both transfer starters on UGA's title team last year.

-Tennessee built their offense this year around a transfer QB (Hooker) plus a #2 WR (Bru McCoy)

-Michael Penix threw for over 4000 yards this year at Washington and led the Huskies to 10 wins after transferring from Indiana

-Michigan has arguably the best center in the country this year. He played for Virginia last season

And there are many, many more. Those are just ones i rattled off the top of my head.

I'm guessing that with such a negative attitude with the portal, that you probably fall into the crowd that Cade wasn't ready one week before his breakout game. Of course, the way DJ played against South Carolina, I think our grad transfer, Hunter Johnson, could have been a program changer by getting us to the playoff.

Unless our issue was solely qb play I would say we need at least one portal WR.

We are one injury away from a RB issue too that could be a problem as well that we could address with the portal
