During Summer as I try to survive until "kick off", things like the Tour keep me going.
Any fans of that here?
I know idiots will respond believing they are clever, but any real fans out there?

Some riders are great sprinters, some great in the mountains. Lance was great at both. But to win the tour you have to be great in the mountains. It’s the stages climbing the Pyrenees that separates the men from the boys!

Some may not know this, but I am a failed endurance athlete.
I failed due to not having time to take up sports (even golf) until I was 40.
Make no mistake, I am now an expert as to it all.
After 40 worked my ### off as a jogger. I was too large, but could hold my own after a race as to cold beer.
I also was an underground boxer in Clemson, met in store rooms -- and why I always had swollen ears and black eyes as I was poor at the sport. In the day at Clemson I took Taekwondo taught by sadistic students. That taught me nothing.
I have broken old man age group records over the South as a fat, drunk foot racer. You can google me.
I had to figure out how to work with less talent.
In my opinion the athletes in the Tour de France define what a body can do physically and mentally.
They define mental and physical talent.
Lining up to challenge peers rules out cowards.
These guys line up against the best in the World day after day for a month.
No event challenges one more.

That video is awesome. Intense. Where that speaker describes the physical state of a Rider after the tour is over, is mind blowing. Thanks for sharing that video.

People bash Lance Armstrong, and he did lie, but that guy has helped a lot of people! And when he was cheating, everybody was cheating! You’re not cheating when everybody you’re competing against is also cheating! So he didn’t have an advantage. He was creating an equal playing field. People also forget steroids are used by doctors every day. Steroids and doping and other things like that or actually not illegal. And they are done with a doctors supervision. I think professional athletes should be allowed to do whatever they want to improve their performance as long as it’s not illegal. He was still just better than everybody else! From what I understand, the doping doesn’t necessarily help your performance, but it helps you recover.
There is nothing more grueling and more detrimental to the human body from an athletic standpoint than the Tour de France. When Joe talks to Peter and they talk about the Tour de France it really is mind blowing!!!
I subscribe to Joe Rogan‘s YouTube channel and Peter Attia’s. I also get his newsletter. That dude is a serious bad ###!
A lot of his podcast and YouTube videos are incredibly intense and you #### near need to be a doctor or PhD to really follow all the minutia and really understand the details with many of his guests, but it’s amazing. Go watch his YouTube video where he interviewed Steve Levitt(l (PhD. Economics) better known as author of mega-hit book, “Freakonomics”.
I don’t agree with him on everything in the conversation, but it’s incredibly thought-provoking. What he gets wrong about fighting climate change is that the people on the left are not serious and really don’t believe climate change is an existential threat. They’re just using it as part of their far left agenda to radically change America and our economy. The green new deal talks more about social justice than actual climate change. But his solution is rather brilliant and really common sense.
He will seriously trigger the emotional children on the left When he talks about medical ethics and how we should conduct medical research and solve the huge need for organs donors in America. But it is 100% a libertarian/economic free market, freedom of choice solution!

Armstrong's problem was that he was such an a..hole and stepped on way too many people on his way up. When the doping thing hit, he did not have any friends. George Hincappie, his right hand man, was doing the same thing and he came out of the mess pretty much unscathed.

You don’t get that good in a sport that difficult without having a killer attitude. Greg LeMond tries to look like a sweetheart today, but he took no prisoners! And look what Armstrong had to overcome with cancer to get where he got! Most highly successful people in life have stepped over a few bodies to get there. Of course they are exceptions, but being hyper successful at anything takes a degree of arrogance and kill or be killed attitude.

Casual fan here and tune in for about half the stages when I can. Good distraction when I use the indoor trainer for an hour to 90 mins.

I really got into it while the USA had a competitive team as well as competitive individuals. Just too bad they were all on steroids and got kicked out or lost their jerseys. I was enjoying the scenery along with how gruelling the race was and some of the scheme's used to win stages or sprints. It was fun, then to find out it was corrupted just like many other sports, I lost my drive to watch it. Heck, even horses take too many drugs and get kicked out of races. Plus the best trainer in the world can't enter a horse even if it does pass drug tests because too many of his horses have been druggies. Is there a sport that isnt corrupt any longer, or their players are primadonna's and actually think they have a say in the world, which they end up with because social media don't block their rants but they throttle others.
I think this NIL and Transfer Portal has put me in a bad mood until our last somewhat untampered season of college football begins.

Actually, from what I understand, the drug that the horse got tested positive for is actually legal in many other states that have horse racing.

My Bride worked with a large company where bikers had sway.
K is an ace biker, me not so much.
One day she comes home and informs me we are on the company team to ride from Charlotte to Myrtle Beach. My brain says that is insane.
The company (K was the company buyer) got in the best gear. They had a plan, not supposed to be a race but it is. Our shirts were great -- still have mine.
How many of yall have a Bride who comes home with that crap?
Really, how many have a Bride who comes home and lets you know you are headed to the Beach on a bicycle?

My favorite sporting event outside of Clemson football. I’ve ridden enough to know a fraction of the absolute hell those guys endure. I’ve felt the pleasurable pain of dropping everyone on a climb, and the miserable pain of being dropped.
I plan to watch a few stages in person, if life ever gets back to normal. The scenery makes it great television, and I enjoy the short history lessons along the way (RIP Paul Sherwen).

Fan here. Though I haven't watched as much the last few years. I do try to keep up.
Matter of fact, I've actually been getting the itch to ride more, and I've been looking to upgrade to a new Specialized Tarmac as my current bike is now 12 years old.

Geneva Switzerland, so the Tour is literally "across the street". In 2019 I made hotel reservations in a town that was on the 2020 course. Unfortunately "Miss Rona" visited and I had to cancel the trip. As we were watching it last year when they rode in Paris, I decided to make reservations for Paris 2021. So here we are in 2021 and we've got a room near the Arc de Triomphe to view all the happenings. Now I've got to wait for Switzerland to remove Paris from the "at risk" list.
On another note, Tour de Suisse starts June 6!

Went to the world championships back in ‘86. Saw LeMond, Hinault, Fignon, all the big names at that time.
It was cool seeing the Air Force Academy grounds. Many planes displayed in flight around the perimeter road. Their chapel is something worth seeing also.
The track racing was the best entertainment I thought. Ekimov was
a young standout during that week. Moved on to be a good road racer if I remember correctly.
The Olympic Training Center was also a
good thing to see. Garden of the Gods, Pike’s Peak, all that stuff out there in the Colorado Springs area. Just beautiful.

I watch it every year, although it's generally the only bike race I watch. I love the scenery and the announcers.
During the Lance years, I watched from start to finish.

it might not be your thing but the biggest gravel race in the world is tomorrow and will be live streamed. there are at least 5 former world tour riders in it . used to be called dirty kanza now unbound gravel. 200 miles race in kansas . look up ef racing dirty kanza on you tube really cool documentary

I was. Armstrong and Landis kind of ruined it for me.
Finding out everybody was a bunch of dope cheats really kind of turned me off. Yes, I know - now - everybody doped, and the chemistry was way ahead of the controls. Finding out Armstrong had just been flat lying about it the whole time...I really didn't like that. Especially the way he obliterated anybody who tried to speak out against him.
Really admired the guy, at one point. And then he turned out to be this kind of total sociopath with zero real regret for any of it.
Still is occasionally fun watching the Tour roll through those old villages and castles, but the wonder was gone, after all that.

Yep watch it every year. My DVR works overtime during those 3 weeks. I have never ridden even semi-seriously and it has been years since I rode a bike but there is just something about that race. Certainly I enjoyed it more when there were good Americans in the race though. I do miss Paul Sherwin on the broadcast though...

I still ride about three times a week and my normal routine is after a ride, to cool down, I lay down on the floor and watch the last twenty or thirty kilometers of the days TDF race. I love pulling for the break always, and once in a while they succeed, but usually the peloton runs them down.
