But I guess it makes sense since I was listening to his son’s show 20+ years ago in Charlotte.

to the ACC tournament? We tried to use the earbuds in class. Usually got caught because some guy using them couldn't keep quiet about what was going on. If my memory is correct, it was during a class that Barry Parkhill of UVA threw that pass the length of the court with a few seconds left, which resulted in a score to beat UNC as time expired. A yuuuge upset. And of course only the tourney winner went to the NCAAs, so it was a yuuge deal. Or maybe Parkhill was the one who scored. Anyway, the refs waved it off, saying the pass grazed the bottom of the scoreboard, as if they could see it. The room, seemingly watching the teacher at the blackboard, exploded.

With that much on the line, if you were playing any of the Big Four teams in the ACC tourney, you absolutely had to beat them and the refs. Then Lefty came along and upset that applecart.

I dont know if going to 64+ teams was the right thing to do or not, but it killed some of the larger than life aspect of the regular season and ACC tournament.
