Stars and offers, etc

Jun 11, 2018, 4:58 PM

I see it all the time - someone commits and then someone on the board invariably asks, "How is this kid a 3-star when he has 30 offers?"

It's easy. The star rating systems and Crytal Balls (which are useless in my opinion, because most "experts" pick the school they cover for a prospect......several of Clemson's latest commits have been Crystal Balled elsewhere) are very subjective. A lot depends on if a kid goes to a certain camp - does he attend the Rivals camps and not 247? Then Rivals might have him higher. Does he only do 247 and stays away from Rivals and ESPN? Then the latter two will have him lower. Does the kid really not attend camps, like the recent defensive tackle commit? Then he might have a low star rating.

And you can bet this - when a kid is a certain star (let's say 3 for a WR) and then gets offers from Ohio St and Clemson and Bama, he will be a 4-star fairly quick because the recruiting services want the big fan bases at Clemson and Bama and Ohio St. to click on stories, that kid will get a ratings bump. If a kid commits to a school with a big fan base, he is likely to get a recruiting bump. The stars can fairly reflect a kid's ability, but you better believe its all about money, too, and making sure someone keeps their monthly subscription. Stars are important and recruiting rankings can show how well a team might do during a season, but it's more important to trust player evaluations by the REAL experts - the coaches. If they see a kid in camp and like him, that's all you need to know.

Remember, DeAndre Hopkins was listed as an athlete by Rivals and didn't pick up stars until late because he didn't play the camp game, which was loved by the coaching staff.

These guys are currently the 3-stars committed to Clemson. How many will earn their 4th star by December? I'm guessing at least 5 or 6.

Brannon Spector WR
Bryton Constantin LB
Davis Allen TE
Hunter Rayburn OL
Jaelyn Lay TE
Keith Maguire LB
Lannden Zanders DB
Tayquon Johnson DT
Aidan Swanson

ratings and enjoys the recruiting services ... for what they are!

They are a fun and valuable source of information about recruits and recruiting. The give a good indication who is recruiting successfully and who is not. All other things being equal, I'd rather have a team full of 5-stars than 1-stars. The fact is, however, all other things are not equal, which brings me to the final point, which you made ... Star ratings are not a substitute for, nor are they as important or as meaningful as first-hand evaluation by our coaches. Ultimately, recruiting services exist to make a profit and are dependent upon hits and views. Coaches jobs are much more directly dependent upon getting it right.

Re: Stars and offers, etc

Jun 12, 2018, 7:55 AM

The good news for Clemson fans is the coaching staff now carries enough credibility to boost a players ranking just by offering. I expect several commits to get their 4* by rivals this week.

I do think our coaching staff is still working out how to recruit when every player wants to come to Clemson for a visit. Things seemed to work well with a small class, but limiting offers with the larger class and the changes in official visits seem to be making it more difficult to wait on some players. The good news is they get to target some under the radar guys.

If there is one thing we can count on Dabo will never get out worked on the recruiting trail.

Clemson recruits good kids WITH character which fit OUR system........not the 4 or 5 star kids with 0 character.........I trust our coaches and could care less about stars........and we get more than our share of 4 & 5 star players.............just look at our record over the past 6 or 7 seasons.......Go Tigers!!!!!!

This Rivals explanation of a 3-Star Recruit

5.7-5.5 All Region Selection: considered among the region’s top prospects and generally among the nation’s top 800-850 prospects overall, a potential All-Conference candidate and a player deemed to have mid to low-end pro potential and ability to impact at the college level.

5.2-5.4 Low End FBS prospect: considered a mid-major prospect with limited pro potential and expected to contribute 1-2 years at a high level maximum or often as a role player.
