the market...My old Sunday School class wanted to have a fish fry one year and volunteered me to provide them. Well, it took about 5 or 6 trips to get enough for 80 good filets. I thawed them out the day before....and about 2 hours before the fish fry, they cancelled it. Fellas, that was about a thousand dollars worth of filets.......You see, my trips to the Wando are 500 miles...round trip....

My brother was a serious angler. He used to keep his fish, bring them home and clean and cook them. Then he started calculating how much they were costing him. He said, "I can't afford to keep them." And, he became a catch-and-release angler.

can use them to find the thermocline....that you can add a casting ring to help you line up on a waypoint so you hit a brush pile on your first cast....Personally, if Ray Scott had not have foreseen the future and started catch and release, fishing would have gone the way of the waterfowl on the Chesapeake Bay in the early 1900's when they slaughtered them with punt guns...

Remember, you are talking to a guy that started fishing when I was about 3 or 4 years old with my dad. He said when we first started going to Clark Hill, we would rent a 1 and a half horse power motor to put around Hester Bottoms to catch crappie.....Son,when I got to be about 12 or 13, I was able to feather a paddle with my left hand and fish with a cane pole with my right as we eased down a bank line with willow trees and catch 2lb. crappie....Those were the best of days!

My Pop taught me to fish. In his day it was putting food on the table for his siblings. By the time I was 30, was full of myself. I wanted the biggest ever Bass. I had become an as&ho)e.
I was cutting edge for BASS in the boat. Pop would be hauling in a mess of Crappie or catfish. The deal he was teaching me then was to have some fun.

My father in law started talking smack to me, about fishing, soon after I married his daughter. Seems he had been doing a fish camp, with the church men, for about 40 years. He talked smack every time we would go see her folks. Finally talked me into doing fish camp (it didn't take much). We get out on the water. First cast, I catch a nice bass. From then on, the smack talk elevated to heights never seen before on this planet. Always had to outdo each other. Those were some of the best days. The other guys would laugh and roll their eyes when we started going. It don't get no better than that.

Now that's my kind of bait caster for sure. Shoot that thing a few times, and it will take up the day to retrieve the bait or a fish back to the boat, then load up and go home!!!

BTW, Spud, I'm not a serious fisherman. I'm hardly even a recreational fisherman. But, for 20+ years my brother and Dad owned a bait and tackle store here in Lake County, FL. (Harris Chain of Lakes.) He had a bass boat, my dad had a 16 foot pontoon boat for fishing, not a party boat. I did a lot of bass, blue gill and speck (crappie) fishing on those boats. And, I spent hours in his tackle store just listening to bass stories from the customers. The store was a regular hangout for bass fishermen in the area. (Think of it as Cheers without the alcohol.)
When BASS started Megabucks, the first tournaments were held on the Harris Chain. (First tournament with 100K to the winner.) I got to meet Roland Martin, Larry Nixon, Rick Clunn, Hank Parker and several other big names as they would come in after a day of fishing and restock whatever lures they needed, or they just wanted to shoot the breeze and unwind. Kevin Van ### was the young gun on the tour back then.
I would love to spend a day with you on the water and swap stories with you. You could tell 5 and I'd slip one in, then you could tell 5 more.

The video was funny. Growing up on the coast near Charleston we used to fish the creek and rivers a lot when I was a kid but I’ve become more of a deer hunter than fisherman these days. Also an expensive habit. Spud - don’t know what part of FL you were in but did you ever visit this place near Ft Meyers?

Watching the live stream on majorleaguefishing.com makes me really appreciate just how good those guys are. Watching a 2 hour summary of a tourney can no way tell the story of just how hard these guys work and how good they are. Ott Defoe, Edwin Evers and Jacob Wheeler are my 3 favorites. And, Ott and Jacob are the Jack and Arnie of the Bass Pro Tour.

Jacob Wheeler and four other MLF guys rented my neighbors house while fishing in the Raleigh area this past spring. Spent a couple of evenings talking to them, all awesome guys. I have a 3 acre pond in the backyard and their camera crews recorded a camera man tournament with my 14 year old, good times. Jacob went out of his way to spend time with my son and his buddies.

big lake, they would think I don't know jack about fishing. Now, if I got them on the Broad or the Wando, I at least would not embarass myself. At least I hope I wouldn't. But those guys are unbelievable. I fished with a local pro many years ago during a tournament on Lake Murray. At our second spot he caught a fish and said,"I know what they're doing" and we pulled up stakes and ran way down towards the ### area. We wacked'em on half ounce jig and pigs. Yep, pig trailers back then. To me they were a pain in the ..... you had to put them back in the jar when you moved or they dried out and were useless...

fishing tournaments. Now,these aren't local tourneys where you sleep in your own bed and hit Russell or Clark Hill, or Hartwell for a Friday-Satruday two day deal. No sir, these guys 5 or 6 days in a row. Up at 430 maybe 5, on the water at 630, fish until 3 or 330, go gas up the boat and truck again, respool all your reels(Yep, most of'em do it every day in a tournament),straighten up your boat, get dinner, chat with the wife and hit the sack. Go stand 8 to 9 hours running a trolling motor and make 1500 casts...especially if you are whipping a crankbait or spinnerbait out as far as you can and burning it back.....

Yes, they are amazing. I'm 70 and in pretty good shape. I walk 1 to 2 hours each day (17 min/mile clip). I go out recreational fishing with a buddy of mine and in 3 hours I'm ready to come home.
When BASS came to the Harris Chain with the first Megabucks, Rick Clunn and Larry Nixon were in a race to see who could get to 1 million dollars in winnings first. That was back when 25K was a big winners purse. Nixon won that tourney (100k) and then repeated the next year. He had shoulder surgery a couple of years ago, but still fishes on the Tackle Warehouse series.
Clunn was in the tackle shop one day and was talking about how he fished. It was great. He is was almost Zen-like. "You have to become the fish. You don't have to just see the fish. You don't have to think like a fish. You have to become the fish. When you make a cast, you are no longer in the boat. You are looking at the bait through the eyes of the fish. You have to watch the bait through his eyes."

fishing a crank bait, that ,"I felt a fish turn on it". The fish didn't hit the bait, he just swam by it and Fritz could feel it...Also, lately I have finally decided to get proficient at skipping a jig under docks. Never have done it. So, I am making myself do it for an hour or two when I go. But, you watch Gerald Swindle do it....Son, he is the Drew Brees of skipping. He can skip it farther and more accurately than anyone on the tour. Well, he and Andy Montgomery. But,Gerald can flip it back handed like nobody's business. Unless you have used a baitcaster, you have no idea the skill that takes not only to get it to skip, BUT NOT TO GET A BACKLASH!
