priceless. I weep for my alma mater. Like the NCAA had any choice in the current state of NIL.

NIL was going to happen, but he was totally inept. Knowing it was coming, he should've gotten ahead of it and laid the ground work for some regulation or oversight for semi-fair play. He kept hiring committee's to investigate and never did a dang thing. Dude is an idiot. Even the ESPN woke NIL talking heads say the dude was horrible.

What does being woke or not have to do with NIL?

Apr 27, 2022, 9:11 AM

The Supreme Court pretty much mandated that it would strike down any regulations or laws as unconstitutional that prevented athletes from benefitting from their name, image, and likeness.

How do you regulate this?

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-15yr.jpgringofhonor-jospehg.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

how does the NFL regulate their pay? and free agency?

Apr 27, 2022, 9:41 AM

The NFL is more restrictive than the ncaa as it currently stands.

You regulate pay for play. that is not NIL.
Pay me a million dollars with a slew of lawyers and I could come up with something. Dude did nothing.

2024 white level memberbadge-donor-10yr.jpg2005_majors_champ.jpgbadge-ringofhonor-xtiger.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

The NFL has a salary cap of 208 million right now.

Apr 27, 2022, 10:01 AM

But the ones paying the salaries, want the salary cap.

The NCAA could institute a NIL cap I guess but the the Supreme Court would shoot that down.

When someone's paying an athlete, why shouldn't they be free to pay as much as they want to pay? It's their money.

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-15yr.jpgringofhonor-jospehg.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

i was using that as an example of limiting pay

Apr 27, 2022, 10:24 AM

not too long ago it was about 45 million per team.
For true NIL, i agree.
Pay for play, the ncaa is allowed to have rules for fair play. Just like the NFL does. They limit what each team can give out to even the playing field. That is allowed to cap money going out.

regardless. I'm using that an an example, not what the ncaa should do. But they should've done "something" to level the playing field, just as the NFL does.

It's important to note that the NFL rules,

Apr 27, 2022, 10:39 AM

like those of the other major sports, are collectively bargained. So both the players and owners agree to the salary cap, etc.

It'd be different if the NCAA unilaterally imposed a limit. The Supreme Court wouldn't like that. But if it were collectively bargained, the courts wouldn't be an issue.

Of course, there is currently no union for college athletes. For now.

Good leaders are proactive.

Apr 27, 2022, 9:06 AM

Poor leaders only react after being blindsided. That's not to say that a good leader never gets blindsided but the talk of NCAA athletes being so tempted by money is not new. I remember seeing some of our football and basketball players on campus wearing nothing but sweats day after day. It made me wonder where a man might buy a size 17+ shoes, a size 5X shirt or jeans 42" in length and how much they might cost. That was back in the 1980s.

That being said, I doubt there was any way to control the NIL being that it's states' law. The situation bothers me but so do many other changes I've seen in my life. I'm not stressing over the NIL. In fact, being forced to wear a seal belt bothered me much more. They always seem to fit perfectly and rub the tip off my left nipple.

It's all relative.

The NCAA did fail on NIL

Apr 27, 2022, 9:14 AM

By not having a plan in place when the bottom dropped out or trying to gradually phase this in. They fought it and waited for a court ruling, then they were left holding their #####. It turned into the Wild West overnight.

But I know the answer wasn't fighting it until the end when the ruling seemed pretty inevitable. They had already taken an L over the video games and should have known this was coming. The transfer portal was also terrible timing here. The perfect storm for chaos.

Apr 27, 2022, 9:36 AM

And I mean, who is to say all of college football won't adjust and make it more entertaining? But at the moment, I see more potential for messes. What's to stop a big school from, hypothetically, coming in and luring away someone like Dabo with the agreement that he brings all of his studs in tow? That could wreck a program overnight.

but Mark Emmert is a worthless piece ofshit. Maybe regulations could have been put in place that would stop schools and their associates from buying players. Not sure if the supreme court would have struck down regulation prohibiting the buying of amateur athletes

Apr 27, 2022, 11:22 AM

A way for players to get compensation but that it would go into an account that's only accessible after they graduate? Not saying that's a perfect solution, but that would have probably satisfied the court without having millionaire freshmen/sophomores coming back to the huddle after overthrowing an easy pass to a WR who isn't making ####. Along with O-linemen who ain't making ####.
