speaking of refrigerators not lasting, had a repair guy here

Aug 22, 2019, 3:24 PM

today. The bottom-freezer door of my Frigidaire French-door wouldn't close and seal on both sides unless you pushed in the right side after closing it. And it made a crackling, grinding sound when opening and closing. I've tried adjusting the door per the book instructions, but that didn't work. The Lowe's guy talked me into buying the extended warranty when I bought it, which I never do. I got an offer in the mail reminding me that it expired 9/01/19 and I could renew it. Welp, I called for warranty service.

Nice young guy shows up, looks it over, then gets on his phone talking with an expert somewhere. Great. I said, I think it needs new slide assemblies on both sides, because it's crackling on both sides. He keeps looking it over and talking on the phone, the person tells him a couple things to check, but they don't have a clue. Finally, he says on the phone, "can we order the whole slide assembly for both sides? because I think that's what it is." The person on the phone looks it up, says OK, and the parts are on the way. This is not good when they send some yahoo that has to talk on the phone to a remote expert to try to diagnose appliance repair.

At least I think this repair will offset my warranty cost. Winning.

Yeah, but they've had your money all along....

;)

that 1/10th percent in my checking account compounds.

Aug 22, 2019, 3:49 PM

sooner or later it adds up to real money. AND back when I bought the fridge, fridge warranty, gas range, and microwave, that's when I opened up a Lowe's charge card AND GOT 5% MORE OFF, EVEN THE SALES PRICE. Can't do that no more.

oh, and guess how old the fridge is?

Aug 22, 2019, 3:59 PM

5 years old. I've heard a lot lately that they only last 5 years.

I've had the EXACT same problem....so I gotta ask

Aug 22, 2019, 4:45 PM

Did he pull the drawer all the way out? If not DO THAT ASAP. Check if there's ice underneath it preventing it from closing properly. We had the exact same problem and found about an inch of ice on the floor of the freezer underneath the tray, preventing it from closing.

The problem is with the drain line near the condenser coils clogging. That actually happened on ours in the fridge part, meaning condensation drained down into the freezer part as a liquid and then froze in the bottom. Over time that prevented the door from closing properly. They have to tear out the back and replace the drain line with a new one that will not clog.

Or it could be the wheels/tracks. But make sure there's no ice in the bottom please, if he didn't, which I assume even an idiot would do. We were told it's a VERY common problem with our Samsung french door fridge anyway.....

no ice. Had that on a different fridge one time.

just cleaned out the drain and it worked fine. I think this one is just under-engineered. It's a big ol heavy drawer when it's full of frozen food, and those side mechanisms just aren't stout enough. Another one on the bottom in the middle would help a lot.

I had a new dishwasher delivered a few years back

Aug 22, 2019, 5:11 PM

and the guy brings it in, looks at my fridge and says, "I installed that in 1989, I remember because the guy that was supposed to couldn't lift it up the steps." So my fridge is 30 years old, I would have never guesed, I've had one repair on it that cost about $300 bucks in 9 years. Sub-Zero may be pricey but I'm pretty sure I when I get a new one it will be Sub-Zero.

Miele makes a #### good dishwasher btw.

Got a 1992 fridge running fine in the garage.

Aug 22, 2019, 6:55 PM [ in reply to I had a new dishwasher delivered a few years back ]

Bought it used in 2001. Was new in 1992. No probs. Samsung bought in 2011. Had it fixed once so far....same for their washing machine. Dad had a Westinghouse 1936 fridge that died in 2006. Inlaws have one running from 1942 still runs great.

We can put a man on the moon and make refrigerators that last 75 years, but we can't make one that lasts 10 years now. Sad.

Oh, they can make them.

Aug 22, 2019, 8:06 PM

They just figured out it is not conducive to continued sales.

The key is to hop on a new product fast

Aug 23, 2019, 7:50 AM

You see it all the time. When a new product comes out, those that buy the earliest models, will have them last forever. My parents bought their house in 1981. It was built in 1978. It had this amazing thing called an automatic garage door opener. It was installed when the house was built in 1978. It was made by Sears and was a very early model. And it lasted until 2016. Almost 40 years. Guy putting a new one in said he still sees these old ones working all the time, but the new ones last 10 or maybe 15 years, tops. I'm still on my original Keurig. I bet if you buy a new one today it won't make it past 10 years.

Companies innovate and come out with new and popular products which people gobble up. Then they start cutting corners to increase profits (that's a big part of it), plus they make them not to last so they can sell more.

I'd pay $20K for a fridge and not blink twice if I knew it would last 50+ years. People WILL pay for quality.
