actual preseason ranking trend given the hype around the bulldogs under Kirby Smart…
2018: Preseason #3 Finished #7
2019: Preseason #3 Finished #4
2020: Preseason #4 Finished #7
2021: Preseason #5 Finished #?
This is supposed to be UGA’s best team in decades, and they are #5. In fact, if the playoffs started this weekend, UGA would be on the outside looking in. Georgia fans like to think the bulldogs are getting better under Smart, but the numbers just don’t bear that out. Help me out here, what am I missing?

May be a good team but he is a mediocre coach who cannot win a tough game in the 4th qtr. Watch him and his coaches in the red zone with under 2 mins....chaos and disorganization on the sidelines.

I think the problem is is that they stumble. They lose to an unranked team or they just can’t get over the Alabama hump.
In 2020 they lost to Alabama and Florida
In 2019 it was USCar (unranked) and LSU (eventual National Champion)
In 2018 they couldn’t beat Alabama in the SECCG. They lost to LSU as well.
In 2017 they lost to, you guessed it, Alabama in the Natty.

Georgia recruiting rankings:
2014: Finished #8
2015: Finished #6
2016: Finished #6
2017: Finished #3
2018: Finished #1
2019: Finished #2
2020: Finished #1
This is what makes them the "best" team in decades; nothing to do with on-field performance. Georgia fans will take a recruiting "win" over a national championship any day.

The positive, top left quad, are the results of preseason rankings and the negative, bottom right quad, are results during the season, ie- as the games are played throughout the year.
