Sorry Not Sports ... Clemson Ice Cream

Feb 24, 2022, 2:16 PM

Does anyone know how to buy that stuff (Exchange 55 Pints) (not the commercial stuff that is sold at grocery stores) without having to shell out $80 plus for shipping. Didn't there used to be a way you could pick them up on a Thursday morning?

Pints are sold for $6 each at the 55 Exchange store on campus. It is open 11:30 AM to 6:00 PM Monday-Friday and 1:00 PM to 6:00 PM Saturday and Sunday. It is in the Hendrix Student Center at the intersection of Cherry Road and McMillan near the high rise dorms. They also sell ice cream cones and cups and the same milk shakes that we used to get at Newman Hall in the old days (they do cost more than $1 now tho) along with cold brew coffee. The pints are also available at The Pound Cake Man on Hwy 93 and at Keowee Brewing Co. in Seneca in in some of the POD convenience stores on campus.

Those aren't the same milkshakes that we used to get at the P&A Building back in the old days.

Sometimes good things fall apart so better things can fall together.

Yep

Same ice cream, same formula. Only thing that has changed is the location. And instead of little old ladies behind the windows the store is manned by students. Some of the same students that make the ice cream.

the 80's) were my ONE indulgence that I would allow myself occasionally (I was the definition of a broke college student).

They were "tears in my eyes" amazing back then. I've had a couple fairly recently and they were real good, but not amazingly good.

If they truly taste exactly the same - then I would be a great case study on perspective (I guess).

:)

I know what you mean about being the broke college student. I worked in the creamery in Newman in the morning before classes and officiated intramural basketball at Fike in the evenings to make enough money to send Zales $20 cash each month to pay for the future Mrs. Rhettfla’s engagement ring and maybe have a little beer money left over. I came back about 2 years ago to work with the students in the 55 Exchange program so you can trust me on the formulas.

Those milkshakes indeed were delicious!!

Did anyone else get an egg added to the milkshake like me and other soccer players used to do in the early 80s? ??

Funny, but I guess "Exchange 55" is supposed to be part of the Power's Business School. If so, I guess business doesn't delve into marketing because it is impossible to go one their website and find out anything about their ice cream ...... except shipping somewhere for over $80, for six pints. I appreciate the information here ....... much better than our business school!

No connection. The 55 Exchange is still managed and directed through the College of Agriculture. The ice cream is still made by students using the original Clemson Ice Cream formulas and the store is staffed with students. The program exists to give these students practical experience in food manufacturing and running a retail business. The Clemson’s Best brand (the commercial stuff that is sold in grocery stores and NOT made on campus by students) was started and managed by CU Business Services - completely separate from the 55 Exchange. The Clemson’s Best brand has created a lot of confusion in the market but is in no way connected to the 55 Exchange and does not use the same original Clemson Ice Cream formula.

Thanks .... I knew that the commercial brand sold at stores was not the same ice cream and knew that the '55 Exchange was run by students. I was confused because the Power's Business School newsletter is call the "Monthly Exchange" and thought it was connected in an advisory capacity to the "55 Exchange. I guess really the "55 Exchange was not designed as a large scale commercial adventure but to cater to students and visitors to Clemson which is fine. I retract all of my negative remarks!

Went by Hendrix yesterday and bought 12 pints of the '55 Exchange ice cream. I took 11 pints to a friend in Greenville and brought one pint home for my wife. She let me have a taste! My goodness ...... if you are within 20 miles of Clemson, and like ice cream, and don't stop by and get you some, there is something wrong with you in the head! ;)
