only 3 things can happen when you run the ball...

and two of them are bad. You either gain yardage, lose yardage, or fumble. That means for every run you attempt, you only have a 33% chance of something good happening. It just so happens that I am a mathematician by trade, and have a firm grasp of probability and statistics. And when you combine this knowledge with Dr Marion's startling analysis of passing the ball, it's easy to understand why we are struggling offensively. The odds are literally against us on every single play, pass or run.

It would seem that punting the ball on 1st down gives us the best odds of avoiding a negative result.

That's what I call a brilliant understanding of empirical mathematical data and analysis. My 2 CU algebra professors (Col. Stritzinger and Col. Shindler) would be very proud of you.

You aren't old enough to understand.

In the early '60s, there was a helpful fellow standing outside Tillman Hall during matriculation when students selected professors for the classes they were required to take. This fellow told me a time-honored fact just before I entered the class enrollment rooms:

Never take a math class taught by a professor whose name starts with an "S".

Well, since I was late to the enrollment exercise, I saw that the only choice I had for the required Algebra course was Col. Stritzinger. I think I made a "D" in the class.

Knowing that I couldn't go forward without a better grade, I took the course over again the next semester and believing I could do no wrong, selected Col. Schindler as my professor.

I came to the final exam with a test average of 90.0, needing only a 90 to receive an "A" for the class. I made an 89.0 on the final and received a B+ for the course. That was the most disappointing experience I had as a Clemson student.

You know the percentage may go up if the lineman (really anyone without the ball) would keep blocking until the whistle. I’ve seeen other teams with just about the whole line blocking five or ten yards down the field pushing the pile on most every play. We need that in our playbook.

are you sure that's legal?***

This blows my whole theory. Never mind.
