some thoughts on the BBall team....

Feb 7, 2016, 9:12 AM

I’ve written several posts on the basketball team over the last few months, mostly about either keeping the Coach (whom I like) or eschewing the 3-point shot (which I also like). After yesterday’s disappointing loss, I thought I’d do a little stat shopping to see what might pop up. What brought most of this to mind was a couple of glaring facts from the Va Tech game:

Jordan Roper let fly 18 times yesterday, while Blossomgame and Grantham only totaled 15 shots between them. Additionally, a full 11 of the first 19 shots the Tigers took yesterday as a team were 3-pointers, and by halftime they had but 3 free throws.

So I accumulated some stats from 16 Power 5 games to date. I added UMass in as it traditionally has a fairly good team, but threw out the Georgia game which was a complete statistical anomaly. In total Clemson is 8 and 8 over these 16 games, so we’re looking at an equal number of winning games and losing games.

It’s a small sample, but here’s a couple of things that stand out in terms of wins and losses for specific stats (I’ve highlighted the ones I liked with asterisks **):

About Roper:
** When Roper takes more than 20% (1 of 5) of the starters’ shots – 1 win, 5 losses (all stats out of 8 wins and 8 losses)
When Roper takes 7 or more shots in a game – 5 wins, 7 losses
When Roper takes 4 or more 3-pointers – 3 wins, 6 losses

About 3-point shots:
When the starters take more than 40% of their shots as 3-pointers – 2 wins, 5 losses
** When the team shoots more than 20 3-pointers – 2 wins, 6 losses

About Free throws:
When the team has more than 15 Free throws – 5 wins, 4 losses; BUT
** When the team has more Free Throws than 3-pointers – 5 wins, 1 loss

Combination:
** When Roper shoots less than 20% of the starters shots, AND
the team shoots more Free Throws than 3-pointers – 4 wins, 0 losses

It ain’t hard: this simply isn’t a jump shooting team, and the point guard isn’t the “go-to” guy. The lefty 3-pointer from the corner looks cool, especially when it finds net – but it simply isn’t what will win games for the Tigers over the long haul.

It’s not Roper’s fault, per se, when the team loses – far from it. It really appears that all but Nnoko could stand a change of offensive mindset to some reasonable degree. But Grantham and Blossomgame really need to make it their “cause” to get to the hole and to the line often, and Nnoko needs to be a low post option every trip.

If the offensive identity of this team doesn’t get sorted out now, I’m afraid they're not only going to miss the Big Dance, but they're also likely to keep losing to inferior teams like Va Tech.

At any rate, keep plugging Tigers!

I have made these same observations. Three point shooting AINT the Tigers forte. Teams are killing us driving to the basket. Unfortunately we don't do that very well. Kicking the ball out for three point shots isn't working. Grantham has the skills to be a big time player but he relies on the three far to much . I wish that he could get into a rhythm early by scoring from closer in to the basket. I wonder if the foul situation is the reason Coach B doesn't use both bigs at the same time? I still think this team has a shot at March basketball and it may be to late for changes but downtown shooting is only great when they go in!

14-9 7-4 is the only thought you need on the BBall team.
It's not Roper's fault when they lose or Nnoko's post play
when they win.
It's 40 minutes of our guys vs their guys, and at the end of the game
the only "stat" that matters is the final score.
You got more points than your opponents ,you win.
They got more points than you, they win.
I suspect Roper,Blossomgame,Nnoko,Grantham, and even Brad Brownell knows that!
And don't think for one moment the Selection committee cares about stats.

Nice post. Good info. I've felt we take too mamy threes as well. Especially early in the game. Seems like we get too confident and don't work our offense. Definitely hope we get things back on track.

I try not to post here unless there is something so crazy that it begs a response. You start with thoughts on the basketball team, yet you only talk about one player. The player you pick you obviously don't like so say you don't like Roper. (Per se). Statistically during that one game you talked about Roper shot 44% from 3. This season. He is shooting 38.9% from the field. 37.9% from and 77.1% from the free throw line. The team is 3rd in the ACC in 3 point land. And according to the stats (which I know you love) Roper is 3rd on the team in field goal attempts. Yet, you picked this one player to frame around the losses. This player is 1st on the team in steals. 7th in the ACC in steals. Let's talk about Assists. He is 7th in the NATION in Assists to turnover ratio. Which means he rarely turns the ball over. He has 97 assists this season. He will finish as one of Clemsons best in that catagory. 2nd on the team in free throw percentage. 5th in rebounds (at 6'0").

Now, you started out talkin about how bad the team is and landed on one guy. Even got more clowns to chime in on you slighted information. Get to your point about how you don't like the team. All of the players. If you are goin to break someone down, give all the information.

If you are supposed to be a fan, this is not the time. This team has done good work. The guards create the space for the bigs to operate. If you don't lIke Roper say so. Don't say," some thoughts on the bb team." You and your little friends commenting here, this team is not supposed to be last 4 out on lunardi's board. A little respect for these guys efforts. Most important, don't pull statistics out to try to make a player look bad epifunny. Leave that to politics. Just saying.

Perhaps you shouldn't generalize or make assumptions. Epifunny quoted facts. His response was likely to an earlier post by a blind Roper fan. It was simply a response. You ran off the fact track. More constructively, I think epifunny, as well as myself, are trying to suggest valid strategies to emphasize playing to this team's strengths, rather than its weaknesses. Blind faith and support won't help. If a player is great at steals and assists, then they should concentrate their effort and time on those. Hard work is appreciated and valuable when well directed for results. Questioning the support of the team is an entirely different matter.

Has not coach Brownell himself said in games that we got away from our game taking too many threes? I post here regularly in support of our coach and program. This is a fan board not an official outlet for the university. Take your arrogant self righteousness and shove it up your ignorant #### Just saying! If you know what proper posting is all about then do it instead of playing board police.

Plasticsurgeon, his post posted about no one else but Roper. You are on record in other post showing your hatred for this team also. The shooting on the perimeter is what creates space on the inside. Ran off the fact track. ###. Those are real facts. Check the numbers. Dude. Clemsontigers.com. his response was and I quote AGAIN, " observations on the TEAM" no response to a blind Roper fan. He created the chat thread. His information was slighted and pointed in one direction. His information is not accurate. if Roper shoots the ball we lose this many times. We have seen what happens when we dont have guards that don't and can't shoot. Offense doesn't run well because teams sit on our post players. Basketball is a team game. Everyone has to Be able to score. Oh, and by the way that same guy is averaging double figures in ACC play where we are having most of our success. Holmes, Roper ,Grantham and Devoe have made it so defenders can't really leave them. You 2 talking basketball strategy. His post spoke of only one player. Read it again d#&khead.

Bottom Line, The Team Is Better This Year And Has A Legit

Feb 15, 2016, 11:27 PM [ in reply to Re: some thoughts on the BBall team.... ]

shot at the NCAA's ... its simple ... win the next 5 games ... will have a real good resume, have beating more then a few Top 25 Teams ... never mind the OOC ... its a big so what then ... if they go 4-1 rest of season, then the HAVE TO do really well in the ACCT, to show they can play well in a tourney type setting ... cause the NCAA's are like ... a real big tourney ... and they want teams that can play well in a tournament ... after all, it is entertainment after all ......

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-10yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

The Roper and 3-point attempt #'s are more indicative

Feb 14, 2016, 3:36 PM

of team troubles getting the ball inside than it is any kind of indictment on playcalling or shot taking from any one player. When you can't get the ball down low or penetrate well with the bigs, you don't draw fouls and free throws, and shot attempts thus invariably rise from your perimeter players.

When we struggle as a team to get the ball closer to the rim on offense, we're more apt to lose games. This can be said about most any basketball team.

Feb 15, 2016, 10:14 AM

Thanks for the emperical proof ... just seeing them play they ALWAYS seem to "do better" when the emphasis is taking it to the hoop ... drive first, kick out as the last option. While our outside game is better, its not our best/first option.

dear Snowtown and Just sayin' - go F*** off.....

Feb 15, 2016, 11:58 AM

for all the ######### on here who want to lie and suggest that I "picked on" Roper, let me effin' repeat myself:

"So I accumulated some stats from 16 Power 5 games to date... but here’s a couple of things THAT STAND OUT in terms of wins and losses for specific stats:"

So up yours....

now for an update on the stats, as we're up to an 18 game Power-5-only sample during which the Tigers are 9-9 (.500 ball):

When Roper takes < 4 3-pointers: 6 wins, 3 losses

When the team takes < 20 3-pointers: 7 wins, 2 losses

When the team takes > 1.8 2-pointers for every 1 3-pointer: 7 wins, 2 losses

When the team takes more Free Throws than 3-pointers: 6 wins, 1 loss

And again, these are for games during which the Tigers have 9 wins, 9 losses. These results "stand out".

Take it for what you think it's worth....
