Some Offensive positives from last nights game

Oct 16, 2021, 7:10 AM

Since almost everyone on the board has highlighted a lot of our troubles on offense, I do think it is worth mentioning there were some positives from our offense last night:

1. Our running backs are solid. Pace is really coming along and shows power/strength in his rushing while Mafah is a real threat in space.

2. We added some under-center plays that were not goal-line or in obvious short yardage situations. These under center plays produced some solid rushing yard results that seemed to allow our struggling OL an opportunity to just line up and hit the guy in front of them. IMO, we should do more of this as it has one immediate advantage - it prevents defenses from having as much time to react and gum up/penetrate the line of scrimmage as happens on a lot of our shotgun snap runs plays (i.e. the run play just takes much longer to develop from the shotgun). I hope this was not a "one and done" thing and we develop this further to use some play action passes off this under-center scheme.

3. It only took us 6 games but Tony Elliott finally figured out that throwing to the tight ends is allowed in college football. Great job by Davis Allen last night - we need to continue using our tight ends in our passing game for the rest of the season.

4. Good on the staff for keeping Bockhorst at the guard position. While we still have major offensive line issues - our line does perform better with Bock at guard and NOT center.

5. Ajou Ajou and Beaux Collins were both targeted twice and caught the 2 passes that came their way. We are nowhere near where we want to be in our passing game but it was nice seeing these two receivers contributing to some positive plays.

Good point on taking some under center snaps.

I was waiting for some play action out of those sets too. Maybe next week.,
