Whitney Named ACC Basketball Legend

Whitney Named ACC Basketball Legend

Whitney, who played just two seasons (1992-93) at Clemson, still completed his career as the Tigers’ all-time leader in three-point field goals with 167 three-pointers in a 59-game career. Full Story »

What is funny? That someone who didn't play in the ACC is

Feb 7, 2006, 11:43 AM

now an ACC legend by virtue of expansion (Curry)?

Whitney was a hell of a player for CLemson.

You're right, Whitney was a very good player for us, but

Feb 7, 2006, 11:47 AM

a "legend"? Seems like a token pick (one from each school) driven more by his 11 yr NBA career than his contribution to the ACC. I'll bet 99% of ACC fans outside of Clemson can even recall hearing of him.

I enjoyed his career as much as anyone and think he is an excellent representative of Clemson. IMO he is not an ACC legend.

Can't recall hearing of him.******

The ACC regularly does stuff like this and chooses

different players each time..........they like to celebrate their history.

I kind of like the idea.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

when you let each school have a person in its like..........

church league. There should be a criteria or it means absolutely nothing. The SEC does the same thing in football with their SEC Legends. I like Chris Whitney but mentioning him with the likes of Laettner, Jordan, and Duncan is just plain stupid.

Um, Mark Allerie was Duke's and Cunningham was UNC's and

Feb 7, 2006, 12:51 PM

Rusty LaRue was Wake's representative this time around. There is no mention of comparison to Laettner, Jordan or Duncan this year.

This isn't the ACC's top 12 player list, but this is who they are honoring this year........I really don't see anything wrong with it.

Guess we will have to disagree.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

We should have 3-4 players and that is it. I can see Tree

Feb 7, 2006, 1:00 PM

Rollins, Dale Davis, Elden Campbell and maybe Buckner. I can't see how they got Whitney.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Man, there are a lot more great Clemson players than that -

Feb 7, 2006, 1:03 PM

Bobby Conrad and the Mahaffey brothers come to mind initially.

but compared to the other ACC schools they are not in the

same class.

Stan Rome, Larry Nance, Grayson Marshall . . .

Feb 7, 2006, 1:27 PM [ in reply to Man, there are a lot more great Clemson players than that - ]

It wasn't a best ever list, just a list of legends for that school. Marshall didn't do anything in the NBA, but you were hard pressed to find a better floor leader during his time at Clemson (in the ACC) . . .

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

So, you wouldn't include Horace Grant?...

Feb 7, 2006, 1:38 PM [ in reply to We should have 3-4 players and that is it. I can see Tree ]

The first player in history to lead the ACC in scoring average, field goal percentage, and rebounding for TWO years straight.

Billy Williams...A leader on the "Final 8" NCAA team of 1980.

Banks McFadden...Led Clemson to its only conference tournament title in history.

Butch Zatezalo...One of the greatest scoring machines in ACC history.

or Larry Nance?***

the NBA (Spurs i think).I dont think that's funny at all!!!

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

He was my fav player as a kid

Feb 7, 2006, 2:31 PM

We would be down by 15, and I would think, if Whitney can just hit 5 three's...
