So You Would Want Inhabitable Land? ---

So Putin wants Ukrainian land......so he may wish to open his trench coat and show his nuclear missile to the Ukrainian people to threaten them??
Psssst.......if you nuke the land you want THERE WON'T BE ANY LAND TO OBTAIN!!! Things would be deformed all over.
Is his mentality if he can't have it...no one will?
Does he have a mentality?
Take and be happy with the 8 million acres or so you already have and appreciate the peace...I'd say

The land will not be uninhabitable forever. The cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki are bustling metropolises today.

I'd prefer un-inhabitable land ... because I hate myself.

Putin and Russia have had an agreement with the West for quite a long time about NATO and proximity to Russian borders. The CIA head is a former Russian ambassador that knows that granting membership to NATO for Ukraine would trigger a response by Putin..... Biden openly stated membership was up to President Z.
But outside of any underlying and complpex issues that were already in place or spinning out of this action by Russia - there is one main issue in my opinion and that is Putin wants Russians and not territory. If he wanted Ukraine he would have already taken Ukraine lock stock and barrel. He has so far been quite selective in engagement. At the start of this he could have steamrolled right through Ukraine in days if territory was his only goal.
this is not a good place to debate all the crap going on, but to the original post - Putin has no intention of nuking Ukraine. He does not need to - if he nukes something it will be much closer to home than Europe. He is a thug but he is a clever cuss with certain but sometimes quiet objectives in mind.

I believe you give too much credit to the Russian military. They are not now, nor have they been recently, a formidable force. They will overtake Ukraine simply because of numbers, not because of any outstanding military might. Putin has very little left in the arsenal other than nuclear threats.

Note: when attempting to take Ukraine in the game Risk, numbers = military might.
Just in case you might play Risk some day.

no illusion that Russia is not what it once was militarily, but Ukraine is not exactly formidable. Consider that Putin already has what he wants from Ukraine so if he really wanted the territory per se he would take it.
Long term occupation would not work well for him for exactly the reason you state, but that is not what he is after as I stated. He wants the Russian people in the eastern regions of Ukraine.
If I am not mistaken when he went into Georgia all the talking heads said he wanted to reconstitute the Soviet bloc, but he annexed the Russian sections and stopped.
FWIW - we are a narrative about the situation. Take all you see with "grade of slaw" (tnet vocabulary). Be skeptical and critical.

If Putin wanted "scorched earth", Ukraine would already be 1/3 the size it was with no sea ports and thousands dead. I don't believe, at all, the Russian Military could stand up to the U.S., but the Ukrainian Military would have no chance against a fully unleashed Russia. The one thing we haven't heard about during the last 5 or so days, is about the Russian Air Force. Strange and even the U.S. Military is stumped. There's a something up with that?
