So who has Clemson made offers to in the portal?

Dec 12, 2022, 3:36 PM

The TNET article on potential portal targets listed who each one had offers from. Why haven't we heard who we've offered? It shouldn't be a secret. Maybe it's out there but I haven't seen it.

We're a developmental, culture building program.

Dec 12, 2022, 8:08 PM

The staff prefers to bring in HS recruits who want to be here and understand our culture. We want to develop kids. That said, if we have an absolute need then we'll try to find a culture fit from the portal.

But if don't sign any, that doesn't mean we're gonna get "left behind" or any of that garbage. Teams are not becoming better programs with portal players. They're filling holes.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: We're a developmental, culture building program.

Dec 12, 2022, 9:46 PM

We will absolutely get left behind if we don’t start using it. It’s not an opinion. It’s a foregone conclusion. An inevitability. You can’t lose 10-15 veteran, physically and mentally developed players a year to the portal and replace them with undersized and inexperienced players from high school and walk-on ranks and not fall behind those that are replacing 3rd stringer portallers with dynamic players.

Dec 13, 2022, 8:59 AM [ in reply to Re: We're a developmental, culture building program. ]

Nobody is building elite programs with portal players being a necessary ingredient.

10-15 lost players to the portal?? Well dang man if something crazy like that actually happened, then yeah we'd need bodies. Good thing that hasn't happened though.

Again, the best team in the country has zero portal kids playing.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Have you been asleep since 2018?

Dec 13, 2022, 9:10 AM

You continually ignore all the teams that have gone on to either win the national championship, play for one or make the playoff with portal players while we got blown out.

2024 white level memberbadge-donor-10yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I talked about Joe Burrow. Are you referring to DK?

Dec 13, 2022, 9:16 AM

Burrow and DK were absolute needs.

UGA currently has zero portal kids starting. Michigan has an incoming OL, but he's had no impact on their best season in decades. OSU has 3, a kicker, a dude with 19 tackles and another dude with 8.

What are you talking about man?

And 10-15 transfers??? Still waiting on you to explain that one.

Again, if we have a late, absolute need for a starter, then we'll dip into the portal. If we don't need to replace anyone, then we won't. And it won't change our trajectory AT ALL.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: I talked about Joe Burrow. Are you referring to DK?

Dec 13, 2022, 9:34 AM

You continually only look at one year lol

LSU 2019 - blew us out in the NC

OSU - 2020 blew us out on the way to play in the NC

Alabama 2021 - makes the NC with arguably the best WR in the nation and would have won it had he not gotten hurt

USC 2022 - 4 wins to playoff contender with portal players

SC 2022 - beats us with portal players

ND 2022 - beats us with 2 starting portal players

UGA 2021 - beats us with a starting portal player FROM CLEMSON on the way to win the NC

Pitt 2021 - beats us with portal players on the way to winning the ACC

Oklahoma 2019 - Makes playoffs with portal players

Notre Dame 2020 - makes playoffs with portal players

Cinci 2020 - makes playoffs with portal players

And this is just the relevant examples.

2024 white level memberbadge-donor-10yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

LOL

Dec 13, 2022, 9:54 AM

So anytime someone beats us it's because they have portal players and we don't?

Again, I covered Fields, Burrow, and DK. DK got kicked off the team. The other two left to become starters at their new school. None of those other teams beat us because they had some portal kids. We lost all of them due to a struggling offense.

Alabama has two losses.

USC has a new coach and built a new team with portal kids. If Caleb Williams wanted to come to Clemson last year, we could have used him. Again, never said we won't take any.

Where are Pitt and ND playing?

Pitt, I thought you said not to use one season for anything? And you reckon maybe an NFL QB had more to do with things than all these other (apparently numerous impactful) portal kids?

Which portal kids elevated ND to the playoffs in 2020. Were they why ND made the playoffs? Where is ND playing again? Is it a better bowl than us?

Same thing for 2019 OU. Why are they 6-6 with all those amazing portal players?

Who were Cinn's star portal kids? Is Cincinnati a model for our program? Where are they playing, a NY6 bowl?

Yet again, we will sign a portal kid or two if we have an absolute need. Saying that we must sign portal kids or get left behind is nonsense.

Since the portal started, we won a national title, we finished #2, #4, #14, and currently #7 and in a NY6 bowl.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I didn't make that case but since you ask

Dec 13, 2022, 10:00 AM

LSU doesn't beat us without Burrow

OSU doesn't beat us without Fields and Sermon

UGA still beats us without Kendrick

ND still beats us without their 2

USCjr does not beat us without Rattler and Wells

2024 white level memberbadge-donor-10yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Neither Fields nor Burrow were portal players.

Dec 13, 2022, 3:49 PM

And again, they were absolute needs for their new programs. Moved into the starting spot from day 1.

Trey Sermon was a grad student transfer who wanted to start. He wasn't a portal player. If you know of any Trey Sermons, then you may want to make the staff aware. But then again, I don't believe we're looking for a starter at RB, are we?

The other teams you've admitted portal kids had no impact. Cool.

We beat USuC with even a 40% daily from the QB. What bowl is USuC going to.. a high regard NY6 bowl? Maybe we could use a starting WR, but we're good at QB.. virtually all the impactful portal kids have been QBs, and with two recruited 5-stars we should be good there.

Again,

UGA has zero.
OSU has a whopping 28 tackles through the portal. Those two guys will probably transfer again.
Michigan has no impactful portal players.

These teams obviously don't need portal kids to survive, and likewise we won't get left behind if we don't sign a bunch either.

Yet Again - if we have an absolute need for a portal player and starter, then we'll go there. I never once said or insinuated we will never use it. But, portal players are NOT elevating teams from good to great or great to elite.

If we have to find a likely starter, then we'll use the portal, but kids are not moving to be depth. Again, the portal hasn't changed the landscape. One-offs don't show that either.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Neither Fields nor Burrow were portal players.

Dec 13, 2022, 3:52 PM

Fields was 100% a portal player.

Burrow was not because he was prior to the portal.

What one earth does it matter what the process was called?

The rest of your post just gives me reason to not even continue this discussion because you're so far from reality when it comes to the topic that it is just pointless.

2024 white level memberbadge-donor-10yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Fields was NOT a portal player.

Dec 13, 2022, 4:10 PM

He got a transfer waiver on some trumped up racial slur.

Yet again, we've covered Burrow and Fields ad nauseum. These one-offs are not a significant sample size to show portal kids are making good teams great and great teams elite.

I don't know nor really care about TCU, but otherwise there are a total of 4 portal players in the playoffs.

UGA- 0
Michigan - no impact
OSU - 28 tackles from two players, who will likely quit again.

Where are:

Notre Dame
Oklahoma
Notre Dame
LSU
USC
USuC
Cincinnati

I thought the portal was moving needles, man?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Oh yeah, Pitt too.

Dec 13, 2022, 4:15 PM [ in reply to Re: Neither Fields nor Burrow were portal players. ]

Why didn't they play in the ACCCG this year, you know, with all those program changing portal players?

Likewise for the rest I listed.

If you know of a Trey Sermon or Joe Burrow, then let the staff know and maybe we'll go after them. Otherwise, one-offs aren't significant data. We're #7 and could/should be in the playoffs with a fixed QB situation and zero portal kids.

Kind of like the other regulat teams in the playoffs... ZERO IMPACT.

You mentioned citing "one year".. well that's all you've done sir.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: LOL

Dec 13, 2022, 10:18 AM [ in reply to LOL ]

"Alabama has two losses."

No one is saying using the portal guaruntees a national championship. With that said, we currently don't stand a chance against 2 loss Alabama.

"USC has a new coach and built a new team with portal kids. If Caleb Williams wanted to come to Clemson last year, we could have used him. Again, never said we won't take any."

They don't have to say we won't take any. The fact that we never has says it.

"Pitt, I thought you said not to use one season for anything? And you reckon maybe an NFL QB had more to do with things than all these other (apparently numerous impactful) portal kids?"

You mean the NFL portal QB?

"Which portal kids elevated ND to the playoffs in 2020. Were they why ND made the playoffs? Where is ND playing again? Is it a better bowl than us?"

Ben Showronek, Nick Mccloud, absolutely had a lot to do with it.

"Same thing for 2019 OU. Why are they 6-6 with all those amazing portal players?"

huh? They were 12-1 and made the playoffs

"Who were Cinn's star portal kids? Is Cincinnati a model for our program? Where are they playing, a NY6 bowl?"

They don't make the playoffs without Jerome Ford transferring there and sitting the bench for a year behind Gerrid Doaks

"Yet again, we will sign a portal kid or two if we have an absolute need. Saying that we must sign portal kids or get left behind is nonsense."

We had absolute needs last season and didn't. And losing double digit players to the portal initiates a need for similarly developed depth.

"Since the portal started, we won a national title, we finished #2, #4, #14, and currently #7 and in a NY6 bowl."

The first portal class walked on to their new campus 2019. We have not won the NC since the portal began. That's just false. We have been blown out in the playoffs since it began with teams that had star portal players.

2024 white level memberbadge-donor-10yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I'm not following any of that.

Dec 13, 2022, 3:58 PM

But I'm positive it doesn't exhibit how good teams are getting great and great teams are getting elite.

You can't cite one-offs and expect to be considered needle-moving data. Why are we ranked higher than all those teams?

Please sir, one more time - we will go after portal players when/if we have a need for a starter, but there is ZERO evidence that the landscape is now portal or die.

Let's go back to my original question - what starters are we going to tell to sit down for a quitter from another program. And please, don't try to tell me how anyone is leaving one school, where they're unhappy with playing time, in order to be "depth" at another.

UGA - 0
OSU - 28 tackles. No impact.
Michigan - no impact.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

We lost 11 players to the portal last year

Dec 13, 2022, 9:11 AM [ in reply to Bullcrap. ]

2024 white level memberbadge-donor-10yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Dec 13, 2022, 9:25 AM

Portal kids aren't moving around to be depth.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

uh, yes they are. The vast majority do. Why don't you tell

me a little more about the QB we will face on Dec 30th.

2024 white level memberbadge-donor-10yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

That's completely false.

Dec 13, 2022, 4:04 PM

Virtually none of these kids are leaving programs where they're backups in order to be backups at other schools. Almost half of them get left in the portal for that very reason.

You seem to keep missing the point here - I very clearly said we may sign 1 or 2 if we have an absolute need for a starter. They may or may not be impacted, but more often than not these kids aren't moving the needle, to elite - our goal. The one-offs do not show that.

Where is LSU now?
Where is Pitt now?
Where is USuC?
Where is Notre Dame?
Where is Oklahoma?

Aren't these supposed to be programs building themselves via the magic portal?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: We're a developmental, culture building program.

Dec 13, 2022, 1:50 AM [ in reply to We're a developmental, culture building program. ]

They are becoming better because they are filling the holes in their roster.

Even if we are net zero in lost vs incoming talent through the portal, that’s still a stronger team than refusing to (or being unable to) bring in transfers.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Like who? UGA has zero.

Dec 13, 2022, 9:10 AM

Michigan has one. An OL.

Ohio State has (3). A kicker, a safety with 18 tackles who came with the DC, and an LB with 8 tackles.

The portal is not making good teams great and it's not making great teams elite. It fills necessary holes when you have an absolute, starting need. Again, what starter will we bench for a guy who wasn't starting at his previous school?

Dec 12, 2022, 8:01 PM [ in reply to Who says you have to bench anyone? ]

Most all portal kids are in there because they weren't starting. Kids aren't transferring as a backup at one program just so they be a backup somewhere else. Transfer kids want a starting slot, and if you tell them "we'll see", then they're going to go somewhere else.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Well, sir, it's been pointed out numerous times.

Dec 12, 2022, 9:47 PM

2024 white level memberbadge-donor-10yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Well, if they find themselves buried on a depth chart, then they'll just transfer again.

Dec 13, 2022, 9:32 AM

Yet again, if Dabo sees a portal need, then he'll go there.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I'm not suggesting any particular player will be benched,

Dec 12, 2022, 7:06 PM [ in reply to We might sign one or two. ]

-not saying it couldn't happen, in theory, depending on circumstances, but I'm not expecting the staff to bring someone in and summarily bench anyone. I just suspect whatever holes they have that they feel they need filled via the portal- they'll not hesitate to do so. I'm not suggesting they'll go portal-crazy and just patchwork everything together. That's not Dabo's style and I think it's probably a wise inclination.

But I also know what's been reported about portal ratios and while guys enter the portal for either NIL or more playing time (or both), the ratios aren't going to support that demand forever. Some guys, if they want to play elsewhere, may just have to join another team and compete for a spot. I would expect Dabo would be willing to use it here and there in that way, maybe?

Dec 12, 2022, 4:34 PM [ in reply to from ESPN regarding Cypress ]

With him Monday night, the day he entered his name into the portal. I don’t know how ESPN deems that someone was offered, but I’m not sure why else Reed woulda spent that much time talking to him.

Probably has to make a visit to get an official offer.

Remember who is in charge of looking at players in the portal. I am not very confident in him.

All Pearman can do is tee them up. The coaches (mainly Dabo) are the ones that have to pull the trigger.

? What's your issue with Pearman?***

Should Clemson offer a full ride to Portal Players B4 ...

Dec 12, 2022, 4:11 PM

signing day on Dec 21. What are the pros and cons? Does Clemson wait to see what they sign on Dec 21 then offer Portal Players?

I think that most of the kids lined up to sign for Clemson on Dec 21 are solid and the coaches do not expect anything to change with them no matter the portal situation.

I get that concern about offering before signing day, but I doubt many will want to wait on an offer.

Great point Buckhead, I would think it would make more sense to wait as to not scare of kids from committing, but that's just my opinion.

Men at 25 play football. Men at 40 play tennis. Men at 60 play golf. Have you noticed as men get older their balls get smaller.

Why would Clemson put out there who they have offered in the portal ? It’s kinda between the coaches and the players. Fans really don’t need to know until someone actually signs

Many offers are known.

Well, it drives the t-net old man cult crazy cause they want to be in control which is enough reason to support secrets. Announcing offers also let’s other program target out recruits for illicit NIL offers. Let the process play out

If that's the case, why let Clemson media or recruit ever post they received an offer? Why is a portal recruit different? Genuine question.

Dec 12, 2022, 6:02 PM

I don't get it. Reading these comments and other threads on tnet concerning the portal. Posters act like they're aliens or some covert act. The portal is no different than a High School recruit. Saying, an offer is an offer, that's it. Whether they're in hs, juco, or now portal. We post a story every other week that Clemson offers player x and then lists their bio or film.

Yes, all the information from "offers" comes from recruits.

Dec 12, 2022, 6:32 PM

The coaches are not allowed to discuss recruits by name until they sign an NLI.

When a recruit[he, his parents, guardian, handler...] claims an offer, then it becomes "news".

So, there may be unreported or yet to be reported "news", no "news" or other eg a secret, which should be respected?

I hope we never use the portal at all unless we are absolutely desperate ad really don't have a choice. It's good when we tell our players to trust the process that we don't undercut that with the portal and create a situation where our guys are leaving.

I have been in contact with a few coaches but it has to be the right fit. I want to be first team and the money has to be right. It’s definitely not going to be somewhere where my position will be a competition. I reiterate that I want to start day 1.
