Re: dont we need two or more arenas?

Feb 1, 2013, 9:44 AM [ in reply to tear down Littlejohn. Play in Greenville til new arena ]

we added a second gym to LJ for the two teams we have and now its not enough now. doesnt that mean we should build two arenas or more? ;)

badge-donor-05yr.jpgringofhonor-74tiger.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I like that idea too.....

Feb 1, 2013, 9:59 AM [ in reply to tear down Littlejohn. Play in Greenville til new arena ]

Anything basketball related should be right where it is now.....

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

During the 2003 renovation....

Feb 1, 2013, 10:28 AM [ in reply to tear down Littlejohn. Play in Greenville til new arena ]

Clemson attempted to work out an arrangement with the Bi-Lo Center to serve as the temporary home for Clemson basketball. However, Bi-Lo Center Administrators believed they were Clemson's only real option and therefore wanted an exorbitant amount of money for the use of the facility not to mention 100% of the concession revenue. Clemson refused and ended-up using the Anderson Civic Center.

The BI-LO Center is now managed by the Greenville Arena District which is a political subdivision of the State of South Carolina. The nine members of the Board are nominated by County Council and appointed by the Governor of South Carolina. Hopefully this change would result in a more cooperative approach in Clemson utilizing the facility.

Another issue would then be finding a convenient and suitable practice location for the teams.

time around if it does happen.

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-20yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Exactly....

Feb 1, 2013, 10:42 AM

Another issue to consider is, of course, money. It would cost significantly more to demolishing the existing facility than to built on a vacant site.

Sometimes good things fall apart so better things can fall together.

but wouldn't you want to demolish it anyway because what

Feb 1, 2013, 10:47 AM

are you going to do with an arena sitting empty on valuable property? The cost to maintain the building would be a waste at that point. Hopefully we get it right this time around. From the point LJ was renovated until now there have been 4 arenas either built or renovated significantly in the ACC....NC State, UVA, GT, and Maryland. They've made significant investments in their basketball programs. VT has an awful arena that is dated. Pitt has a nice new arena where the football stadium used to be located. FSU plays in a dump. I don't know much about Miami's arena but do know it's only around 10 yrs old.

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-20yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I absolutely agree....

Feb 1, 2013, 10:58 AM

I think the demolition costs would be off-set by the costs of the on-going maintenance of the existing facility.

located adjacent to the Tucker Center (formerly the Leon County Civic Center). That being said, they play in a municipal facility, which brings its own issues. Clemson doesn't face that.

Feb 1, 2013, 10:50 AM

Lot 5 is the logical site laregly because the topography of the land would allow part of the arena to be built into the side of the hill.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

it would be a great location with the natural valley but I

Feb 1, 2013, 10:54 AM

don't see it happening...it also would have been a great location for the football practice fields right behind the WEZ but that wasn't going to happen so our guys ride golf carts everyday.

The side of Lot 5 nearest Littlejohn...

Feb 1, 2013, 10:57 AM

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Back in 2010....

Feb 1, 2013, 11:13 AM

Auburn spent close to $93 million to build the Auburn Arena to replace the Beard-Evans Coliesum.

In hindsight, I thing Auburn wishes it had demolished the Beard-Evans Coliesum and built the Auburn Arena in its place rather than on the new adjacent site.

Ironically, like Littlejohn, the Beard-Evans Coliesum opened in late 1968 or early 1969.

Feb 1, 2013, 11:46 AM

from wikipedia:

"Aside from the main court, the arena also contains two practice courts, a weight room, twelve suites, coaches offices, the Auburn Ticket Office, and the Lovelace Athletic Museum"

Pictures look very impressive.

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-20yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I suspect IPTAY feels differently.....

Feb 1, 2013, 11:02 AM [ in reply to They can get over it... ]

The people who currently park there are pretty high up on the IPTAY donor ladder. I'm guessing IPTAY would rather not pi$$ them off.

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-20yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

You may recall....

Feb 1, 2013, 11:18 AM

some people went completely ballistic when the propositin of building a parking garage on the site of Lot 5 became known. I'm guessing this suggestion would generate a similar response although in reality, once completed, they would be quite content.

Some people have very narrow points of view...

Feb 1, 2013, 11:27 AM

and won't accept change. There's nothing sacred about Lot 5. If Clemson decides to use that land for something besides a surface parking lot then so be it. The attitude demonstrated by the ones that objected to having a parking deck in that location is what's holding back Clemson (and SC as a whole for that matter).

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I completely agree that...

Feb 1, 2013, 11:46 AM

there are some very narrow minded and self-serving people at Clemson but I was adamantly opposed to building a parking garage on that site.

If you've ever been to a football game at UNC

Feb 1, 2013, 11:31 AM [ in reply to You may recall.... ]

you would be pretty upset about the prospect of parking decks too

military_donation.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I was opposed to building a parking deck on the Lot 5 site

Feb 1, 2013, 11:49 AM

Clemson definitely needs more parking and there are plenty of other places where a parking deck would not be nearly so obtrusive. Lot 5 is not one of those places.

No one cares how IPTAY feels...

Feb 1, 2013, 11:10 AM [ in reply to I suspect IPTAY feels differently..... ]

Clemson needs to do what's in the university's best interest regardless of what the fans think. Many fans are extremely narrow-minded when it comes to sports and if you listen to them you'll never get anywhere.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I'm guessing the AD does care how IPTAY feels since they

raise the funds responsible for funding the programs. There needs to be some give and take in a good discussion.

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-20yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

You and I both know that's not true....

Feb 1, 2013, 11:24 AM [ in reply to No one cares how IPTAY feels... ]

An organization whose donors (in excess of 15,000) are responsible for generating over $20 million in annual revenue for the University are not going to be ignored.

Remember that Littlejohn would be gone

Feb 1, 2013, 12:40 PM [ in reply to You'll also pi$$-off alot of IPTAY donors.... ]

That could be leveled and have many more spaces. You would probably free up land and spaces doing it that way vs the current LJ and proposed practice facility.

Since the WEZ, those folks in that lot have had to walk up hills to either the South or North entrances anyway.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Its a great question but certainly not a deciding factor

Feb 1, 2013, 9:47 AM

Financing is the deciding factor. Logistics and location are things you figure out if the decision is a go.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I'd rather spend the money trying to pay recruits in some

Feb 1, 2013, 9:49 AM

obscure ways. New basketball facilities though would be 2nd on my list.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Some people have suggested....

Feb 1, 2013, 9:58 AM

Lot 2 or the rugby field. However, I don't think either is big enough.

Two places I have heard mentioned that might be suitable; (1) a portion of the Calhoun Field Laboratory just off Perimeter Road and (2) the area where Lot 9, Lot 10 and Lot 20 are devided by Williamson Road near Earle Hall.

My preference would be to try to rebuild it on the existing site.
