SEVENTIES, at least, at Summerville High School under John McKissick. Come live with an Aunt and Uncle, hold this kid back a year to let him add some beef, etc.

Nothing is new under the sun.

Lived near Summerville and always heard of the "practice" going on over there of holding kids back and recruiting.

I went to a high school nearby and we had a young QB that was a gamer recruited to a private school. Idk what happened to him but definitely was like a "this happens?" Kind of moment as a high schooler

Summerville always seemed to "find" a QB from Florida even into the late 90's when I went to the rival school.

I live in Summerville and you are 100% correct***

Tom Knotts was the coach at Indepence in Charlotte before moving to Dutch Fork. He was definitely recruiting at Independence.

Dillon High in SC has a head coach that is also the AD at a smaller school (Lake View) in the same school district (or at least he was 4 years ago when I was working in Dillon). Talk about a conflict of interest. Any kid with above average talent ends up at Dillon living with a cousin or a grandma.

Armwood HS in Tampa has done this for years. They had to give up a state championship a few years ago because they were so openly recruiting the best players from all over the Tampa bay area.

How do you think schools like IMG have been getting these kids to come from all over the country the last few years?

In SC the SCHSL tried to discipline Gray Collegiate for recruiting, but they lost in court. I can’t imagine the pretzel logic the court used, but they can recruit while it’s still against the rules for regular high schools in the same league.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Ironically, SCHSL makes kids that transfer sit a year***

Maybe PeeWee football players should be getting endorsement deals.

This has been going on for a very long time.

We had several players from our small town high school have their parents get P.O. boxes in a district with a big competitive school so they could enroll. Drove an hour and a half every day to go to high school just to get into a program where they would be more likely to be noticed for scholarships.

I grew up in the lower part of SC, and some schools were recruiting back in the 1950s. I had a cousin who lived between two towns, and both schools recruited him.

I played against a team in HS that had two brothers who were really good and had some years left, and their father moved the family to another town for a much higher paying job the next year.

It already has because of Private and Charter schools that give scholarships.

Re: so when does the transfer portal for high school start?

Jan 6, 2022, 10:12 AM

As I have seen in the thread, the private and charter schools get labeled as "schools that recruit", but in all honestly the "high school portal" is alive and booming for the public schools too.

The public schools with recognition in certain sports (Dutch Fork has been mentioned) are collecting kids left and right from their surrounding areas. All it takes is some good paperwork and a new mailing address disguised as a residence and a kid can go anywhere they want.

Kids are bailing on programs that are up and coming to try to chase whatever the schools that are already on top can offer them. It's a really rough time for a high school coach to try to build a program that doesn't have a strong reputation because the kids and parents are so quick to move to the zone where their kid will play for the team that is already established.

Some ADs and schools are starting to try harder to appeal and protest these moves, but there isn't much they can do if kids and their parents are willing to move to a new house just to get their kid on the "it" team.

I grew up in Hampton, VA. There were 4 high schools, each school had a different branch of service ROTC program. You could change school districts if you wanted to enroll in a specific ROTC program. At my school we had Air Force ROTC. We also won the state championship in football like 12 out 15 years. Half the team was in Air Force ROTC (the AD ran the ROTC program)

That's been going on for years. Our school bought our state title in the 70s.
